Finally Satisfied with Battery Life!!!

Can some explain what exactly WiFi sleep is and why we want it on 'never'?
Intuitively it sounds like you'd want that on but I honestly don't know what it does...

Honestly I'm not sure if I agree with this. In my experience, wifi always uses more battery unless you have REALLY spotty 3G coverage. Anyway, I don't think there's any point in changing these settings if you're only going to have wifi on when you need it--if you turn it off as soon as you're done, it isn't going to try and go to sleep, so you may as well leave that setting alone. What it will do is drain your battery if you forget to turn off wifi once you finish with it--if you don't have any reason to keep your wifi from going to sleep, I would personally just leave it set to sleep automatically

You're not giving up anything by using the 'switch on/off as needed' method! It takes 5 seconds to turn the gps, wifi, data, 4G, etc. ON!!!! I swear, some of you make it like you have to do a reboot with a different rom and then manually change 10 settings to accomplish this.

When you ain't using something... turn it off! When ya need to use it... turn it on! So what if your phone isn't receiving friend updates (which you won't see anyway because you aren't looking at facebook when it does) instantly? When you want to check GMAIL, facebook, surf the net... then you go turn your data or wifi connection on. When you are done, you turn it off!

What is hard about that? You lose nothing and your battery life triples!!!!

Bdforte69, thank you for posting this thread. I just downloaded Switchpro yesterday and my battery life is incredible now. That program alone has made a huge difference. I have already recommended it to 2 others and they love it as well. Such a difference.

Oh, I also downloaded black wallpaper. That is key as well.

Thanks man!

Turning off data wont work for anyone who uses push email. Cant get your emails pushed if your data is off. And for me turning off bluetooth is more inconvenient then it's worth in battery savings. I know i will forget to turn it on when i get in the car.
Some of the other tips like turning off GPS and lowering the screen brightness are good ones.

Turning off data is huge for my battery! Switch pro is really nice for manually turning data off (I only need it for browsing).

Doing well today with it. I wish that they would get rid of the icons and have text - I can never remember which is which. KIK

This is one of the things that juice defender can help with, by turning on your data connection for a short period of time on a schedule so that your apps can still sync in the background.

I have juice defender set to turn my data on for 1 minute every 5 minutes, which is plenty of time to sync email, and frequent enough that I still get my email quickly, even if it's not exactly in real time.

Gmail push works pretty well, but it seems like Exchange push is a battery killer. I've got my exchange account set to poll once an hour. For me, that's often enough when I'm not in the office (although, I know that isn't the case with everybody).

dumb question probably but when you turn off data connection, can you still receive/send texts?

I've got a dumber question. Is data off when Background data is turned off, or is there another setting that completely turns data off?
I know when background data is off, I still see the 3G symbol on the top of the phone, and I still receive emails. I can't find any other setting that shut off 3G.

I tried a few things on my wife’s Epic last night and one of them seems to have worked.
1. I updated the PRL.
2. I did the Airplane mode tip.
3. I installed Juice Defender.

Normally her phone would be dead if left unplugged over night.
This morning she was still over 90% battery.

I also noticed she left her charger at home today, so we'll see how well the phone holds up.

Edit:
When the wife got home I checked her Epic and she was still over 50% battery. My guess is Juice Defender is working.

Hey, not saying the tip isn't working for others, but using the airplane mode tip did absolutely nothing to increase my battery life. The only time airplane mode increase my battery life is if I turn it on, and leave it on. Turning it on, then back off, does absolutely nothing in my case.

Also a quick note about the information that comes out of xda forums lately. As much great stuff top developers post there, there is also a lot of junk that comes out from there. Rememebr, anyone can post there! It's just another forum!

Case in point, remember that supposed "gps fix" that was all over the internet for the vibrant and captivate, well we know how that went. It was not a fix at all, and moderators at xda did a disservice to everyone to allow the title of that thread to continue with the word "fix." Very misleading. Some nerd infront of his/her computer who made that supposed "fix" thread got way too much credit around the internet, it was not a fix at all. Then after the initial supposed "fix" didn't work, tons of subsequent "fixes" were posted which didn't work either. I applaud anyone trying to help the greater cause, but it appears many people are posting junk in xda lately, and everyone assumes just because it was posted in xda it must be credible? It's just another forum people!

I myself employed most of these suggestions. Thanks to all. I can't go with JuiceDefender though, it seems to kill my push/exchange even when I set my client to check every 5 minutes (and give it priority). That's a deal breaker for me. I need notification when the e-mail is received. Otherwise, it has improved battery life tremendously.

I have been reading and reading all sorts of battery saving tips and have more than once seem people recommend Juice Defender. I've also seen Juice Defender icons on people's home pages on the "what does your home screen look like" thread. It wasn't until earlier today on another thread when they explained in more detail what it does that I decided to download it. DO IT PEOPLE!!! It's awesome. It's FREE and automatically turns things on and off as you need them. In other words, it shuts off 3G for you when you don't need it. It finds WiFi if it's available and uses that. It allows your phone to not use up juice when it is sitting in your pocket. It sets up automatically when you install it (it somehow searches phone usage or something). But you can also go do Advanced Settings and manually change any setting you want. It's amazingly customizable!!

JUICE DEFENDER ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to all those who recommended it :).

But are you running Exchange Active Sync?? If so JD killed it for me.

I'm brand new to the Epic and love it so far. Question: Turning off 3G (data) will prevent me from getting phone calls and texts sent to my Google Voice number, right? If so then Juice Defender isn't something I can use since I use my GV number for just about everyone. My Sprint cell number is much harder for folks to remember if they don't have it programmed or have their phone with them.

I am happy with my battery life, but lets see if I can improve it even more. My time without signal was 50%. I downloaded JuiceDefender Beta so lets see what happens.

On a side note, I can't select aggressive, extreme, customize, or advanced in the menu. Is this because I am using the free version?

According to JD, my battery life is now 1.47 times better than before. I am unsure of the baseline JD is using to give me that number but it seems fairly accurate. My battery lasts a little longer than it use to.

JD doesn't go well with PdaNet. JD kept turning off mobile data on me. I tried using their widget to keep mobile data on but the only choices I had were "Off Widget" and "On JuiceDefender". I needed to shut JD off so it wouldn't disable my mobile data while using PdaNet, but it isn't a big deal because when I am using PdaNet my phone is plugged in an I can just turn JD back on when I unplug the phone.
