Root Mytouch 4G ROMs

i temp-rooted with visionARY yesterday and ran Titanium and froze all the bloatware/unwanted apps .. which basically keeps the system from accessing them (not using CPU, etc anymore, doesn't show up in the drawer) however - they are still on the phone and can simply be 'unfrozen' at any time in case I ever need/want them again.

then restart then phone - and viola! no more root and all the bloatware stays frozen.
Based on the information in the Super Easy Root in 3 Minutes post I was under the impression that the temp rooting process rolls back the changes upon restart. LINK

Is there a setting that needs to be changed in visionary or does it work as mentioned here?

I was under the impression that perm-root or at least s-off is required for that, but I don't know. Maybe someone who's not rooted can test?

EDIT - Before I was rooted I remember modifying my keylayout file to link google search to the genius button and the mod did NOT survive reboot.

If the FAST BOOT feature is still ON (menu, settings, application settings, fast boot) that would explain it, because the phone doesn't actually reboot when "off." With FAST BOOT, "OFF" is actually a hibernation state. Do RESTART from the power button menu and see if the "frozen" apps stay frozen.

Unless you are perm-rooted (and possibly s-off) changes like this will not stick.

Admittedly, I am a newb and know almost nothing about rooting.

I do know enough that you overclock, put on different ROM's, mess up your phone. Enough to decide if I wanted to do it or not. And enough to know that I needed help on my first one, as I hear the MyTouch 4g root is not the easiest.

Low and behold, I got help, it was not all that difficult and now I sit with a Rooted MT4G :)

Well, I Have a couple of basic questions, basically laid out in the title

1. I know of Search and Google, but when I do that (this applies to question 2) there are numerous ROMs to flash. Would I be correct in saying that the Ice Glacier is the most stable. Would anyone wanna recommend a couple more where almost everything works. I wouldn't wanna lose such a major feature as the camera, which I see is listed in some ROMs as not working.

2. Again, fully aware of Search and Google, I find numerous people mentioning UNrooting and warranty.

It is just that I get so many answers pulling me in different directions

I am told by some that, God forbid I have a problem with this fairly new phone in the first year that A lot of people have sent them back to Tmo and they either don't notice the Root or don't care. Is that true

If that is NOT true, then the next question would follow. How do you unroot your phone. Does it differ if there is a Flashed Rom on it, like right now I haven't done it yet. OR is it a two step process, take off the Flash, then Unroot, i..e. go backward

Or can it not be done.

I look forward to anyones help and appreciate your patience with someone who is in total unfamiliar territory

THIS

From what I gather, the first ROM has S-Off still and the second is completely stock with S-On. I'm not knowledgeable about radios and more complicated topics like that yet so I haven't messed around with these ROMs.

I would highly recommend hanging around this forum xda for a while first. You'll pick up a lot of stuff just by reading the new posts and the responses.

Good luck.

Iced Glacier is like stock only leaner and faster. Personally I'm a fan of CyanogenMod ROMs because they are very stable and well polished. Kind of amazingly so, especially considering they're free.

^ That is an outdated method.

The easiest way to unroot is to boot into HBOOT (the same place you check for S-OFF) and flash PD15IMG.zip (DO NOT TRY TO FLASH THROUGH RECOVERY!)

PD15IMG.zip will overwrite everything on the phone and turn S-ON, reinstall oem recovery, and reinstall the stock ROM as it was the very first time you turned on the phone. Truly one-click.

Unrooting is so easy I really can't think of any reason not to. Here's the guide.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/16/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g/

Download the file. Rename to PD15IMG.zip. Make sure it's pd15img.zip and not pd15img.zip.zip. Do you have file extensions showing in windows? Do you know what that means?

Copy file to root of sdcard. Not in a folder, just on the sdcard.
Power off phone and remove battery. Reinstall battery but do not power on phone.
Hold vol down + power until you get to a white screen. The phone should "detect" pd15img.zip.
Follow the on-screen instructions to update.
DO NOT TOUCH IT UNTIL IT'S DONE AND REBOOTS ON ITS OWN INTO THE STOCK ROM. This might take a while.

Noob question, never rooted my G1, have had the MyTouch 4g for a day and want to trim bloatware etc. Is unrooting a cure for any brick situation, or could rooting and loading new images result in bricking that will prevent the phone from reloading the stock image (which I presume PD15img is) this way? The phone's brand new so I don't care about lost data, but I do care about having to buy a new phone from T-Mo if brick truly means brick.. thx in advance

Brick truly means brick, but 90% of the way "brick" is used here does not actually mean bricked, if that makes sense. So this image can be used to recover a software-fuxored state, but a TRUE BRICK means the phone is 100% unresponsive and literally a paperweight.

Does that make sense?

Hey, I have a myTouch 4g that's Perm-Rooted and True S=Off, yet, I can't custom ROMs. I've followed the step provided by ELBdelorean's "How to Flash CyanogenMod 7 Nightlies on myTouch 4G" and the Unlockr's "How To: Load a Custom ROM on the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G / HTC Glacier" videos but had no success. I have tried flashing Iced Glacier, CM7, and MIUI; every time, I get message saying installation has been aborted! Any ideas? I'm very new to this, so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

ok what verison of clock work did you flash? The lastest is 3.0.2.4, which lets you go from froyo to gingerbread easily.

Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the ROMs available for the MT4G?

I have been reading forum after forum and blog after blog, but most are so technical I'm just not getting the basic idea of what each ROM has to offer.

I see CM7 based ones and MIUI based ones, Sense based ones and Iced Glacier and it is all very confusing. I really just want to know a bottom line of what comes in it and what it looks like. How will it be different then the stock ROM in my phone now?

I don't have the know-how and experience of a developer but I'm not computer illiterate either.

I am however rooting my phone for the first time and want to do it right and make sure I am getting what I am looking for. Which is basically, no more TMo bloatware, faster CPU, longer battery life, customizable fonts, colors, sounds, etc and the ability to take screen shots.

I don't use the Sense and basic apps that came on the phone, I have LauncherPro and use Folder Organizer for my home screens, Dolphin HD for browsing, SwiftKey X as a keyboard, Handcent for SMS, Gmail for email, Astro for files, Doubletwist for media and am in the process of looking for a replacemnt for the Gallery. And I want to keep all of my customizations in those as well if possible.

Lastly, one of the main reasons I am rooting my phone is to be able to do a COMPLETE backup of all the internal and system stuff on the phone that doesn't go to the SD card, which I am reading I should use Nandroid for. I have already bought Titanium Backup and taken care of all the app/system data backups and I believe my SMS, Gmail and Contacts are taken care of in Google/Gmail. But for the Nandroid, I understand it may come in some ROMs? Is that just to restore the ROM to the phone or also to backup my current one?

This can all be so overwhelming because there is just sooo much info out there on the subject and so many different opinions and ways to do things. As it is I have narrowed down the rooting process to 3 different sets of directions after a week of research and am still not sure where to go from there. So any help or advice that can make the 'choosing a ROM' process a little easier will be so greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Jen

PS
Oh and let's not forget that some ROMs then seem to have their own little differences between Stable, Experimental and Nightly...??? o_O Someone please simplify for me! This root & rom noob greatly appreciates your patience and help.
