When do you charge your phone?

Hi all,

I've seen some posts here and there about not overcharging your phone battery by leaving it on the charger too long - like overnight. I know it's bad to overcharge a battery. My assumption, though is that these modern phones have circuitry built in which is intended to prevent overcharging.

I routinely charge mine overnight because I want to have it fully charged in the morning. Sometimes it'll be really low - 10% or less - when I get home from work that I stick it on the charger then. I have the charger cable next to my favorite chair so I can use it from there while charging.

So, when do y'all charge your phones?

I've charged every phone I've ever owned over night and in the car.
Starting with my Treo, I charged my Treo thru my Droid X I charged my phones over night, in the car, and with my computer.

None of them have ever caused me any issues and never needed a new battery.

If I can, I tend to do it around the 40% mark, although I'm not fussed if I go below/above that when I charge.

You can't overcharge the batteries in modern handsets, don't worry. As the battery reaches capacity, the current supplied will be reduced. When it's fully charged the current will effectively be shut off.

Regularly fully discharging Li-ion or Li-polymer cells is bad for their longevity; it's best to top them up from a partial state frequently. I recharge mine overnight as that's most practical.

An occasional full discharge (until the handset switches off) and then a full power-off recharge will help the OS calibrate itself to the battery usage. I do this approx once a month with mine as I frequently swap ROMs and things get confused.

Overnight on my nightstand and sometimes after that I will leave it plugged into my pc until I have to go somewhere so I have the most power possible when I need it.

When I feel lke it really. If it's low but I need it for the rest of te day I charge it, when I go to bed, and any other time its low but I may need it.

Same here over night. And no, you can't over charge the phone. When I unplug my Galaxy S from the charger sometimes the battery meter will actually go down because it ran on battery power while the connection is still connected.

I plug mine in whenever not in use. Or when it's .nearly drain, which is more often. Always on charger overnight.

Thanks for the ideas & opinions.

I will start charging mine more frequently - like at work. They are real adamant about not connecting any personal USB drives at work. I probably should get another wall charger - cheap-a** that I am. If I plug it into the back USB port on my desktop I get a dialog asking to install a driver so I click NO to that. But there are a couple USB ports on the side of my monitor and I tried one of them and there's no message so I assume they're disabled. So that is what I've been using at work.

I'm another user that charges overnight. Before I go to sleep, I plug it in and set my night display (using Gentle Alarm app). In the morning I unplug, put the phone in my pocket, and go to work.

I charge my phone very randomly. Usually I'll be at work all day and the phone will come down to a low percentage by the time I get home. Then I'll charge it for the whole evening and eventually unplug it when I go to bed to have it with me (in non-dirty ways).

That is unless I bring my charging cable with me to work (so I can torrent on my phone at work mwuahah).

On my days off my phone is sometimes just randomly plugged in, even if it's got over 80% left. When I'm at my computer all day I just think meh, why not?.

So far I haven't had any battery issues. One question of curiousity, though: Even with all my apps killed and the phone charged at 100%, how come overnight it drains so much? When I wake up 6 - 10 hours later (depending on the day), how come I only have 80 - 90% left?

Again, Li ion is Li ion (brand/make/model doesn't matter). Overcharging is not an issue. Top off the device as needed or desired.

One question of curiousity: why isn't it on a charger while you sleep? Does it need to be out and about while you're sleeping?

I charge overnight via the wall, not my Mac.

When at work, my phone is off, most of the time, since I can use my pc to communicate, text, etc. If do use the phone during work hours and the battery runs low, I plug it into my PC and charge it.
