To screen protect or not to screen protect...

I purchased the DC from Costco which comes with the car charger, case, and screen protector. I'm not sure of the quality of the screen protector, but from others I've seen with it on, it seems to diminish some of the quality of that beautiful display.

I've used the Invisashield protector on my old LG Dare, and I guess it was ok. I left my OG Droid bare knowing it had Gorilla Glass (which I still managed to break, but it sure is scratch resistant...lol). I still haven't heard for sure if the Charge has GG or not.

So I'll pose the question to you: to screen protect or not to screen protect?

Do not leave the screen bare.
When I got my Charge I didn't put a screen protector on it cause when I took the protector off my Indulge, for the last month of my time with it, the screen looked great and it never got scratched cause I babied it.

Then I get my Charge and the next day there's a tiny nick in the screen. I couldn't believe it. It was so small that you couldn't see it unless the screen was off and you looked at it on an angle, so I was OK.
The next day there's a hairline scratch on it and it was very noticeable when anything on the screen passed it cause it refracted the light.
I couldn't bare it and got it switched out for a new one and immediately put a screen protector on it. Don't get the anti glare ones...they completely **** up the image. Gglass or not, don't take your chances with a screen this nice.

Also, get the Droid x2 leather belt holster. It works perfect for the Charge and keeps it nice and safe.

Mine has been bare for close to a month. The screen is FLAWLESS still. However, I baby it. It gets its own pocket, and I am very careful not to drop it. The back of the phone is another story, although not too bad, and a replacement back is cheaper than ghost armor anyways. If it ever does become a problem, $8 to replace it, and back to a flawless phone.

I'm with you 100%. In fact I keep a spare back just in case and my screen is fine naked. I too have a pocket reserved for the phone.

I found another forum I am part of and this post confirms the Gorilla Glass:

Charge is it Gorilla Glass? - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

But to add to the thread:

I used the DC naked for three weeks, no scratches but I baby the phone, just like others said here it gets its own pocket... I had the VZW anti glare last DC I had before jumping ship to LG Revo, seeing the err in my ways and returning to the superior Droid Charge. The anti-glare was horrible, rainbow, no gloss, and did not cover the screen completely...

I got the Steinheil Ultra Crystal Screen Protector, jacked up the first install, do not follow the numbering system, do it just the opposite. The screen cover fits perfect, it leaves a hair width to the edge if installed properly. It looks just like naked. Some say the Ultra Oleophic is better because it is less finger printed. I love this screen protector, got it for 11.00 on Amazon, got to love Amazon Prime! That is the best service ever!!!

So I was at Costco shopping and I walked by the cellphone kiosk. I had talked to the guy running it on a separate occasion and somehow got into to the Gorilla Glass subject. I told him I'd like to know for sure because I prefer to go naked with my phones:eek:

So he says "Let's find out". He pulls out his keys, grabs the Charge on display and goes to town on it. Next he pulls out a microfiber cloth, cleans it and hands me the phone. With a smile on my face I take the phone and turned it every angle I could trying to find any marks. To my joyous astonishment, I found not a scratch. So if the Charge doesn't have Gorilla Glass, it sure has one hell of a durable screen.

I just had Ghoat Armor put on my DC since I do a lusy job of installing screen protectors adn for $20 they warranty this stuff. Must say it does seem ver smudge resistant, my old protector was greasy in minutes I don't see any marks on this. Only downside is I hate the fact they spray liquid on the phone to apply it and then back it for 10 minutes, but phone is working great and screen has a tad of orange peel, but prefer it over other protectors and don;t like bare. I did pick up a Otterbox Commuter to top off the protection.

Err............a buddy of mine has had his Charge for a week, with no protector on it, guess what?................ it has a scratch !

Why in the world , whether a phone has GG or not, would you not put a screen protector on a $600.00 device ...............you barely notice it's there anyways.

For all you, "I'm leaving it bare and I'm gonna baby it,pamper it and make love to it!", come back back in a few months and let us know how your "Gorilla Glass" looks !

how are you scratching the glass? I used to use a protector with my old iphone 3gs, but took it off 5 months into ownership. I've now had it for 2 years, and I've had no problems whatsoever.

I then got a Droid X, and went bare since day 1. no scratches.

Do you guys carry keys in the same pocket?

I guess if you are girls, and keep it in your purse, then you might get scratches. But keeping the phone in the pocket by itself should be fine.

So far, there is no viable source confirming the Charge has Gorilla Glass !

I seriously doubt my friend intentionally scratched his screen , so asking me how he scratched it, is a moot point.........the screen can get scratched !

Like I said..............take your chances, I'd rather scratch my screen protector and replace it !

It was confirmed in another forum that the Charge in deed does have Gorilla glass. Gorilla is scratch resistant & not scratch proof. I've got the Zagg & love it.

I've used screen protectors in the past. For me, I find the use of them to be annoying, and that their use is worse than dealing with a few small scratches. I'm pretty abusive, put the phone in the same pocket with golf green tool, keys, other sharp objects. Very little impact on the phone's screen, except some very small scratches. Nothing that affects screen readability.

With that said, if I were holding onto my phone thinking I'll sell it later on eBay, I'd get both a case and screen protector. But since I use it as my day-to-day tool and am more concerned with function than with appearance, I use neither. I see no reason to add bulk to the phone.

Different objectives, both valid.
