Root Root Optimus V without computer

OK, one last stupid, obvious, noob question I should have asked from the get-go: am I supposed to be hitting the return/enter key at the end of each line? As in:
su (return)
mount -o remount, rw -t yaffs2 / (return)
system /system (return)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/ (return)
xionia_cwma_12518.img (return)
reboot recovery (return)

That's how I've been doing it, but it occurred to me that I could be hitting return in the wrong places...

No, here is the correct way (spaces are _ below, thanks Andy, should've listened to you ;) ):

Edit: flash_image is the only underscore below, the rest of the red ones indicate spaces

Edit: the first time I posted this, I typed remount,_rw it should be remount,rw no space after comma

su (return)
mount_-o_remount,rw_-t_yaffs2_/system_/system (return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_cwma_12518.img (return)
reboot_recovery (return)

The zoom level you read a webpage at can reformat what has been posted.

First of all, fyi, I renamed the recovery xionia_recover.img, for simplicity sake. This is what I get:

export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$ $su
# su
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /system /system
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/xionia_recover.img
flash_image: not found
#

And then reboot recovery goes to stock recovery.
*yes, xionia_recover.img is in the root of the sdcard, as far as I know (as in, open the folder that says 'sdcard', moved it there, not in any other folders, etc. Shows up under all the folders in the list)

I am done for the night, way past my bedtime. I'll try, try again tomorrow. :)

Hmmm, I thought Gingerbreak put flash_image on your phone.

Download flash_image, unzip it with a file manager, then type the following in terminal emulator: (spaces are typed as _ )

su(return)
mount_-o_remount,rw_-t_yaffs2_/dev/block/mtdblock5_/system(return)
cat_/sdcard/flash_image_>_/system/bin/flash_image(return)
chmod_755_/system/bin/flash_image(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_recover.img(return)
reboot_recovery(return)

Hey JerryScript,( this is just a shot in the dark)maybe sadielynn could rename the xionia recovery back to its original full name. If that still doesn't work, download root checker and double check to make sure she has a full root and permissions. Sounds crazy, I know, but if nothing else works its something to think about. I have a question based on lack of knowledge:when I put a custom recovery and ROM on the sdcard, while the sdcard is in the computer, should they still be zipped?or should I put the unzipped file on instead. I know it's a silly question, but just so I don't have any doubt that I've done that part right,ya know. EDIT:I opened the xionia_cmwa_12518.4_virgin.zip and found a how to text with a line of code I think you should check out.

The whole reason I renamed the file in the first place is because it wasn't working with its original full name.
If I didn't have root, would it show the # after i typed 'su'? I was under the impression it would have a $ if I was not rooted. Also, superuser is showing permission allowed for the terminal emulator, as well as a toast message that comes up and says that it has been granted superuser permissions every time I type in 'su' for the first time.

K, so I did it anyways (slow day at work) looks like everything is fine.

sadielynn,
I just finished typing below and you've posted while I was typing. I'm going to leave it alone for now. Please note my theory about the proper location AND permission to use (specifically) the "flash_image" binary file. Good luck.
====
Following advice in another thread, I actually renamed Xionia to "a.img" to simplify typing and it worked fine.

I think the last tip from JerryScript will fix the problem. It fixed mine (but see below)... now have Xionia loaded and running Harmonia. I am confident that this is the best choice for me as a first timer. Very clean and simple. Nothing missing that I can't download myself. Started me out with a whopping 175MB "Available Space". Still at 141 with Maps and several other apps loaded and haven't even tried moving any of them to SD yet. Things will only get (even) better, I'm sure.

FWIW, I found "flash_image" to be in what I thought was the correct location but was getting "permission denied" over and over again. I distinctly remember getting "not found" earlier but must have gotten it loaded somehow, somewhere along the way. I dl'd it again anyway, Unzipped and COPIED TO SDCARD ROOT (JerryScript, that may be missing from your last tip unless it happens in the code. I copied both the zipped and unzipped to SDCARD to cover all possibilities). She appears to be missing the file and I appear to not have had the right permissions (for the binary itself). Look's like you've covered both in the last instructions.

Nothing took a long time. Recovery flash/install barely seemed longer than a stock Reboot Recovery. Backup took maybe 3 minutes. Wipes were too quick to even estimate and I suppose that might vary. ROM about 2-3 min and 1st boot about the same. Even GingerBreak took less than 10 minutes. This entire process, using only the phone, could probably be done in about one half hour.

JerryScript, you have practically mentored me through this as I lurked in these forums. I am extremely grateful. Your positive attitude and appropriate endorsements of SW and Dev's that you both trust and like built my confidence and helped me through something that seemed much more complicated and confusing than it needed to be. Thank you.

Sorry that it seem a bit frustrating. Unfortunately I'm only a "Nuub" best that I can do is point you in a good direction every now an again. That and come up with shots in the dark from time to time. Please remain calm. I specifically didn't address you in my last post,But instead JerryScript. The reason was not out of disrespect for you, but in hopes that he would see it first and, based on his years of computer skills and knowledge, decide whether or not my observations were even worthy of consideration. I'm sure he, and or the other knowledgeable members, can find the solution to your dilemma. As I mentioned in my previous post ,I had opened up the xionia .zip file and found a HOW TO text. That text had the code for flashing the recovery using a computer. I have no Idea how that translates to the emulator on the phone. I really didn't want you to attempt something without the best possible and knowledgeable advice. I would feel really bad if someone had their phone mess up because of something I said. So I thought it would be better if JerryScript could look at it and determine the best course(or code in this case) to follow. My sincere apologies for any undue stress this may have inadvertently caused. AndyOpie150 Edit: I couldn't help but notice that the keys on your phone were huge. What keypad are you using if you don't mind me asking?

Andy- sorry! I really didn't mean to come off as angry at you! I know your just trying to help. I'm just frustrated that this isn't working, especially since I don't have the knowledge to figure it out myself. I am really appreciative of the help you and JerryScript are giving me thru all of this-i wouldn't have made it this far by myself, not even close! I'm just gonna keep plugging away, as long as you guys keep giving me suggestions to try, lol.
Again, sorry I came off so harsh, it wasn't my intention!

Edit: using swift key x beta :)

Don't give up. I'm sure you'll get help.
I'm new also... spent hours trying to get past this point.

Pretty sure that code/line is copying the file to system/bin.
Should be an easy thing to get past.
There's also a "find" command that will report all occurrences of a file name.
Just can't remember the syntax, which was so easy I didn't write it down...
Can't duplicate either...

All,
If anything in my earlier thread is misleading let me know... I'll fix.
I will also be happy to look into my phone... find, etc if it helps.
Problem is, I probably won't be online this weekend (drill weekend for me).

No idea if it helps (remember I'm new at this as well) but I had already installed:
Superuser (ChainsDD)
BusyBox (Stephen Stericson)
Titanium Backup
Astro

Wondering if any of these changed or added to system/bin???
I'm pretty sure Titanium Backup told me it would use it's own version of BusyBox.
This is all speculation.

With the new ROM I only see "Purchased" apps on the market... wish I'd written the rest down for this purpose.

Hmm, I have all those apps as well, cept I have androzip instead of astro. No, wait, I switched to adao. Before androzip I had file explorer.

Andy-you mentioned a text file inside of the xionia zip..what I downloaded from the link in an earlier post was xionia_cwma_12518.6.img. Should it have been a zip? Maybe that's the issue?

You can always do what I did...

Install the "Rom Manager" app and then rename the recovery image to the same name as the clockwork image and put it in the same directory as the clockwork image. Then use rom manager to flash the recovery you want.

I hope this works as well for you as it did for me:D

Meeh, I've heard mostly bad things about ROM manager. I'm really happy it worked for you, and I'm sure it's a good app for some phones, but I've heard it doesn't get along well with the V. I am gonna try to stick this out the 'hard way' and hope for the best. If it really looks like it won't work, I might re-examine ROM manager. Thanks for the info :)

That .img file is a custom recovery. I believe you at trying to install the flash_image file to system/bin. Use your file explorer to look in system/bin and see if you have it installed already. If so, you can skip that step. If not let us know and we'll see what we can do to get it for you. Also, make sure the flash_image file is on the root of your sd card, not in a folder when you try to install it.

I haven't heard anything good(mostly stuff I should not repeat)about ROM Manager as far as its compatibility with the "V" . Please relax and try not to get to anxious about flashing a ROM(although I admit that you did pick a good recovery and ROM). Haste can cause some people to get ahead of their better judgement(not that you would do that, but I did! the results were anything but good) patience does not come easily, but through mistakes and understanding. Thanks for the keyboard info I'll check it out. Got to go just got a call friend needs to be picked up from the hospital(wow didn't even know he was there)he's all right it seems. won't be able to help(JerryScript should be able to though) till late Sunday. Hang in there just have patience. Someone will solve your problem.

OK, let's make sure my files are in the right place, shall we? flash_image in /system/bin? Check! Proof:
W9XChG9

xionia_recover.img (and Harmonia for that matter) in root of sdcard? Check! (er, I'm pretty sure, that is)
thBcSFC

Check my work, please! I'm real good at being absolutely sure about something and turning out to be absolutely wrong, lol!

Sorry I'm so late getting back to you, I had a couple of employees call in sick, so I worked 14 hours today, and another long one to look forward too tomorrow. ;)

Looks like you have the files in the right places, the only thing I'm not certain about is if you have the proper permissions set on busybox and flash_image, but they should have been given proper permissions by gingerbreak.

Anyway, let's give it another try:

su(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_reocver.img(return)

If that all works ok, then you can type in:

reboot_recovery

Let me know how that goes, then we will move on to flashing Harmonia
