biometrics?

there's apps to make our phone a short-range metal detector, a radio, a gaming platform, an e-reader. you can control your computer from it, find it when its been lost or stolen, do just about everything except babysit, taxes (not sure about this one, actually), and tapdance.

but is there a biometric security app? the unlock pattern can be determined from the trail your finger leaves on the screen, so id love if it would only unlock when my fingerprint is recognized. is there an app for THAT?

theres always a way around it, if you know the way. the point is that you have to know how to get around. i have a coworker who thinks its funny to grab my phone and look through it, and sooner or later he's gonna stumble across some things that are for my eyes only

biometrics works very differently than touch screen. For fingerprint ident it is a camera that scans your fingerprint and anylizes it against points of interest.

Other forms are retinal scan (requires a much better cam than droid has) or bioelectric scan which requires 2 touch plates to measure the current that passes from one finger to the other to determine your bioelectric signature...all of these methods require special equipment that phones are not currently equipped with. There are a few laptops that have it. I did a promo video a few years ago for one.

I haven't tried it yet but can't you specify a particular unlock pattern? a pattern of swipes or something. wouldn't that take care of it?

Like i said in the first post, the unlock pattern is easy cause you can see the trail left by fingers. I use 8 out of 9 points, he still gets in, and i change it every time. I try not to ever let me phone outta my sight but it happens.

ah yes sorry didn't read it thoroughly. I'd kick the sh*T out of my co-worker. Pretty sure that would work. or wipe your screen so doesn't leave any marks for the nosy bastard to figure out.

issue is that im using my phone surreptitiously. if i were to be obvious (even wiping the screen), id get fired...as a group, my coworkers and i have used our phones on the clock way too much and pissed our bosses off to the point where the next person who uses a cell phone without clocking out first gets axed. and while im not in love with my job, its better than being unemployed, considering how impossible it'd be to find another right now.

I just saw this post and thought I would let you all know that my company Blue Planet Apps is developing a Biometric security app for Android. It is called BioLock and will support both Iris and Face Recognition. It will have AES Encryption and the following features:

Lock/Unlock Phone by Face/Iris/Passcode
Lock Apps
Lock Documents
Lock Contacts
Etc...

Contrary to popular opinion, this will be the first true Biometric app for Android when released this month (the current "biometric" app on the Market uses signature recognition, hardly biometric).

I just recently switched from Windows Mobile over to Android and am loving the hell out of it. I thought of doing a search today for a better lockscreen as too many people are nosy when inputing a password or swiping your finger over a pattern. The word biometrics came up in one of the search results and it hit me, that would be perfect. So I search it and see that in Aug of 2010 your company said they would be releasing this app. Hundreds of search results came back with that same claim, yet I cannot find your app for download and its nearly Feb of 2011. The biowallet might not be biometrics BUT it is something that is available. Do ya think you might release an app for us end-users this year? It is a great concept and you have made the claim that you will make it possible using the technology that we have in our hands right now. So whats holding the app back?

how about using an additional app (like AppLock) to set a password (not a wipe screen) for the apps you'd like to protect?

Of course the traditional password would work for an average thief or nosey person, but in all honesty, it wouldn't take an above-average user long to hack a password. What's wrong with looking to the future, or the present even(as advertised above)?

Silly me - I thought the user was just trying to keep a nosey coworker from going through his phone. I was unaware that the information on his device concerns national security and requires the most complicated and sophisticated safeguards currently available.
