Help Streaming media and the Tyrrany of the Sprint Proxies

I recall discussing not letting wifi sleep on the Evo but can't find the setting for that. I can't recall - maybe we were discussing some particular app? :thinking:

I was searching around for it for a while. Go to setting -> Wireless & networks -> Wi-Fi settings and then hit the menu button and select advanced.

The default state for me was never sleep

Thanks again everyone for all your insight. I learn a lot from hanging around these forums. I checked my wifi advanced settings as recommended above, and it was set to sleep after 15 minutes so I changed that to "never sleep", restarted the phone and gave the streaming media a whirl using bluetooth stereo over a wifi connection. Unfortunately the "stalled stream" problem is still there. It's somehow tied to the sleep button because as soon as turn the screen back on the media stream will refresh and we're off and running. I just did a factory reset, reinstalled everything, checked the wifi sleep settings (always on was the default this time), tried streaming over wifi and the problem persists. Oddly I have no problems using a wired headset over wifi or using a bluetooth stereo headset over a 3g connection.

Has anyone else tried a bluetooth stereo headset while using a streaming app like sirius, rhapsody or slacker over a wifi connection? I'm trying to figure out if I have something wrong with my phone.

So - for those new to this issue:

Streaming media involving RTSP (real-time streaming protocol) or fast timing thru HTTP are impacted by the fact that these phones come configured to send ALL traffic through proxies for each.

Services affected are Sirius/XM, winamp streaming (sorry, forgot the name), Pandora (depending on user/version) and many others.

Your existing settings are:

  • RTSP Proxy Port = 554
  • RTSP Proxy IP = rtsp.vog.sprintpcs.com
  • HTTP Proxy Port = 8085
  • HTTP Proxy Ip = pd.vog.sprintpcs.com



Once you have that:


  1. Dial ##3282# (also known as ##DATA#)
  2. Choose Edit Mode (note: you can enter View Mode at this point without an MSL, it's quite harmless)
  3. Enter MSL
  4. Choose Advanced
  5. Change RTSP Proxy Port to: 0
  6. Change RTSP Proxy IP to: 0.0.0.0
  7. Change HTTP Proxy Port to: 0
  8. Change HTTP Proxy IP to: 0.0.0.0

EarlyMon - ^^^May want to update the labels.

On a side note, this process cut my speeds so I reverted back to the Sprint set up.

NVM. Re-read the OP and realized I was doing the right thing. Thanks, Early! CDMA Workshop is pretty easy!

This may be a bit off topic.
When I go into the EPST (##3282#) view mode, the last option on the list that pops up is USB charging, and I can check/uncheck it. Anyone know what that does?

I asked them about that - it appeared on the Evo as well. As near we could tell fiddling around and asking around - it doesn't seem to do anything. You can't save it. The rep finally took a guess that it might have to do with computer vs. wall charging - but I've played with that and didn't see any difference there either.

can you elaborate more on what you did to test your speeds and what symptoms occurred (buffering, stuttering, low throughput, etc etc)


Agreed, please feed back details, your feedback is new to this issue.

If simply assessing by speedtest.net, then expect variability with or without this change. With a decent server connection, you ought see an improvement.

Certainly improves web loading times of this page (UAString set to Desktop), right off the bat.

By the way, thanks for the catch - changed to use literal screen names and screen order in the OP. :) ;)

I did five speedtest.net tests prior to making the change. I was averaging 700kbs d/l and 500kbs u/l. After I made the change the average was half that even with me throwing out two outliers that were below 100 kbs. As soon as I changed the settings back, my speeds went back up to where they were before the change.

Maybe I did something wrong.

other than "lab tests" how is your experience using streaming sites? are you/did you notice increased buffer times, stuttering issues... ?

I've never had problems streaming and that's on both the Evo 4G as well as the 3VO. I do get the occasional skip of the song using audiogalaxy, but I attribute that the pitfalls of streaming.

Anyone ever tried getting their MSL from chat?

I have - they had a fit and got all worked up. I finally got a guy who got it and he kinda chuckled in the chat and explained that they didn't that info (access into that level of service) and if they did, he didn't doubt they would never be allowed to hand it out.

If you call and a rep gives you a hard time, call back and find a seasoned one.

I asked one about this before out curiousity - their reply: having it is a good idea, have I considered taping it inside my back cover in case I'm ever stuck and need to force a hard reset or re-provisioning?

They used to act like you wanted to kidnap their dog when you asked for your MSL but I think anymore, most of the tech staff really does get it. ;)

Most people I've seen have just said that they've been having flaky internet/slow speeds and want to reset their data. I just called and asked and they didn't ask for any reason at all.

And thanks to EarlyMon for a couple of posts back. I wanted to just do chat because I wasn't able to call at the time, but it looks like it would have just been a huge headache. Waited til I could call, and at least for me, couldn't have been easier.

Just call outright and ask, and use an honest and straightforward tone of voice.

If the rep is curious, honesty is the best policy. Either say it's your intention to solve your streaming media issue or that you want access to hard reset your phone in light of the many updates occurring.

It's when people get gamey or skittish that the rep starts to question what the caller is up to - or it's just a bad rep.

On the Evo and Shift forums, people had like a 90~95% success rate just asking, and 100% success rate calling back a single time for that occasional rep that couldn't be bothered.

It's just not difficult - I did it because I found it a lot easier than dinking with going to my Windows machine (to my right, next to this laptop), and dinking with CDMA Workshop.

If a rep asks what else you're going to do with it, be truthful say, Nothing! I know better than to play around in service menus where I can brick my phone. And I have the old settings already written down. (And you do, they're in the OP here.)

But don't go in explaining why - it's not the woodshed. Just ask nicely. ;) :)
