Help [OFFICIAL SOLUTION] 3G issues on the 3D?

What was the 1.47 update on the original Evo?

Only updates I ever got were from eclair to froyo...then the update that forced me to have the stupid blockbuster app and gave me swype (so half good, half bad) and then from froyo to gingerbread...I'm not too saavy with the numerics of it all.

Here's the history:

  1. Rev 1.32.651.1 - Shipped ROM, Elcair
  2. Rev 1.32.651.6 - launch-day OTA (June 4, 2010)
  3. Rev 1.47.651.1 - June 28, 2010
  4. Rev 3.26.651.6 - Aug 2, 2010 - Official Froyo (.3 leak on July 30)
  5. Rev 3.29.651.5 - Sep 22, 2010
  6. Rev 3.70.651.1 - Dec 15, 2010 (two update leaks prior to that)
  7. Rev 4.22.651.2 - June 3, 2010 (update leak in April)

1.47 was a big stability update.

I have noticed that in my house I get terrible 3G reception sometimes, and other times it's decent. I left my house and ran a quick speed test while stopped at a light, and got 1.5 mbps.

Actually, I just messed around with it a little more. Turned the GPS on and got 1.3 mbps.

Turned gps off and got progressively worse. .8 followed by .5 followed by .2 mbps. Ping times got progressively longer as well. I don't think the phone is doing a good job of figuring out which tower to latch onto.

In a matter of 5 minutes I got results ranging from 1500 kbps Down to 25 (yes, 25) kbps down and 1.2 kbps up to 212 kbps up.

Ping times from 315 ms to over 1900 ms.

WTF is wrong with this thing? So frustrating and annoying. Just when I thought I had it fixed an figured out. It's like it can't get a good 3G signal without the gps on, which is stupid.

In MN I got the following via speedtest app with Wifi OFF (connected via Sprint Data Network and not local router):

3G (135ms): 1,772 kbps Down, 643 kbps Up
4G (140ms): 6,971 kbps Down, 1062 kbps Up

So my Evo 3D doesn't appear to have any issues at least here in MN...

I wish I could get those 3G speeds.

3G (148 ms): 318 kbps down, 65 kbps Up
4G (115 ms): 6963 kbps down, 685 kbps Up

This was after a battery pull and updating PRL and Profile
First reading before battery pull/PRL and Profile Update:

3G (500 ms): 83 kbps down, 76 kbps up

At least there was improvement

My evo3d at home via speedtest:
23kb/s up, 52kb/s down Austin
43kb/s up, 66kb/s down San Marcos

My wife's evo3d at the same location
255kb/s up, 512kb/s down Austin
304kb/s up, 500kb/s down San Marcos.

Both updated fully with only a few apps on them. Guess I have a problem phone.. or do we both?

Try the things in this thread - up to and including a reprovisioning and hard reset. If that doesn't work, go for the replacement. Yours is definitely not right - with same hardware, firmware and software and same test conditions, the results ought be nearly identical (can never get identical speedtest server paths, that's the nature of that beast). Your wife's phone is likely right if you saw those same results on other phones in your area.

Thing to know about speedtest - it's an indicator, not a precise measurement. But it's indicating at minimum that your phone is somehow borked.

My speed test says ping 21ms download 9932kbs and upload 960kbs and that is at home on wifi 3G was off. Is that good? I know you can view kbps mbps and KB/s which is the best setting to keep it on? Does it matter? I only get one bar here sitting at my desk so I doubt I can test it on 3G. No it wont find a server oh well I'll try it outside when I leave for work on 3G.

I'm a little bit confused about the hard reset that seems to be fixing the problem. So this is the reset that you do through ##786# and then pressing Menu and selecting Reset, right? And the necessary code is the MSL? Just want to clarify. Thanks!

All of that is correct.

The hard reset is clearing out all of the hidden memory locations, in no uncertain terms, so that no part of the radio setup software goes - gee, that looks like good data over in that spot, I think I'll skip really setting that part up again.

All it takes is the odd 0 or 1 bit in just the right place corrupted into the opposite value and you're off to the races with nothing but trouble.

Hard reset give you the true do-over.

What is the Hard Reset procedure? Is this the same as Settings > SD & Phone Storage > Factory data reset?

Also, what does MSL stand for? Thanks!

I had the same problems with my first 3VO. I had anywhere from 500-2200 ms ping, 7-60 kbps download, and about 70-200 kbps upload. I tried a hard reset, reactivation, etc. None of it helped at all.

I just got back from the Sprint store where I told them I believed the phone was defective, and asked for a replacement. He said no problem, got a new phone out, and activated the new one. Downloaded speedtest, and now I have around 110 ms ping, 1000-1500 kbps download, 600 upload.

Edit: I forgot to add, before I took the phone back, using open signals map I noticed that the connection was always 1x. Even through all of the resets and everything, it never changed. The new phone is under EVDO A. Something was obviously wrong.

Those results were similar for me also using the Boston server. When I changed servers my ping was 144ms, download was 698kbps and upload was 401kbps.
Should I be satisfied with that? Or should I do a reset as well? Sorry I am a noob.

hmm I just switched back to the Boston server and I got 145 ping 1003 download and 579 upload.

I tried that a bunch of times yesterday and nothing was even close to that. Now I am at work today and its only three miles from home, could that make that big of a difference?

Personally I would try to improve that. My reasoning is that, while waiting in the store, another guy came in complaining about his Evo 3D. He talked to the manager, and I overheard them. As he walked over, I asked him if I could see his phone, and downloaded speedtest on his. The results were very close to what you're getting.

The results I posted were in the same store as he was, yet I was getting 2-3x faster. I don't know if it's where you're at, but because it's so similar to his situation and my new phone was much faster, I'd say try it. No harm done besides having to set up your apps again, but if it works, you'd be happy you did it.

Edit: Sorry, I posted that before your edit. Don't know what to tell you now since it raised so much.

Speeds will fluctuate. Anything over 500kbs is respectable, but if the phone is consistently below that, regardless of conditions then there is likely a problem with that phone. IMO the true test if Sprint is right for you is the programs you use and want to use that require a data connection. If you can run those programs with no lag or issues the speedtest results don't really matter.

I never paid much attention to that with my Hero. I would probably not have even given it much thought but one of the reasons I upgraded is so when I have downtime waiting in my truck, I can watch HBO and Netflix. The few times I have tried HBO GO it was so bad it would just stop playing stating my connection was to slow. Should I always leave my GPS on for the best 3G signal?
