Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

Ok I've got the software downloaded, HTC Sync installed.

My Magic is not rooted, how do I temporarily backup my files, contacts, bookmarks etc. before the update process (so that I can reload them afterwards)?

Do I need to download an app from the market and if so, what are some good ones?

There are two apps you can download, Astro File Manager will backup your apps, sms backup and restore will backup your texts, if you have a gmail account, sync it first before installing and it should backup your contacts.

first impressions with HTC sense:

1. smooth scrolling... the old OS was very choppy
2. cool widgets, the calendar, htc mail, people
3. contacts are confusing as hell....I think it was easier with the old android OS
4. native browser is nice, dolphin is cool too with multitouch
5. missing some ringtones we had previously, but I can live with it...

crappy list, but to summarize I like HTC sense! oh btw the stock widget is great.

Did the Dream get Sense also? I thought it was just supposed to be for the Magic, which is why I took advantage of the upgrade offer on the 21st (Rogers was super quick - for once - my phone arrived the next day). Anyways, Sense is a bit confusing, but it looks nice.

Anyways, things are looking good for 2.1 in a few months!

I upgraded my new Magic today, Great Job HTC. HTC sense is fantastic.

I also did teh madatory upgrade for my wife on her new (my old) Dream.

HTC Sense is not on the Dream. In fact, I did not notice anything, 65MB download, but there did not seem to be anything changed on the UI that I could tell.

Just got the text message from Rogers re 911 update. They are not only making it mandatory, but threatening to CUT OFF your phone's internet access until you update!!!!

Further more, it will NOT be OTA, but by download to your computer. There are special instructions for Mac and Windows 7? I guarantee there will be users who will not be able to figure this out. They will lose their internet access via data, and they will not have phones with a 911 fix.

I want to return my frakking Magic and go to another provider.

MAJOR FAIL ROGERS!

I had absolutely no problems updating with Windows 7 on both the Deam and Magic.

I did not follow the instructions, just downloaded, installed and worked like a charm. Checked the instructions after reading this post, and they were very clear. Easy for the standard user.

Hi Mike,

I understand your concern. But, believe me that the steps to manually update OS are so simple that any general Smartphone User should be able to do it on their own.

Here's what might be a reason Rogers/HTC has not provided OTA Update. There are hundreds or thousands like me who bought Unlocked Rogers HTC Dream/Magic phone on Internet. Had Rogers/HTC provided the update OTA way, then people like me would not have gotten the OS update at all.

I must say that the Sense UI is AWESOME!!! It is thousand times better than Stock OS. It's very fast, rich & sexy. There are a couple of issues though, for which we will need to contact Rogers/HTC.
