Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

There are people who are okay with others intruding in their lives, and those who aren't. I am one of the latter.

People in the former group tend not to be able to see the forest for the trees, rather they are only looking at the tree in front of them, thus when people from the latter group try to explain why this particular tree is an example of the forest, and the ramifications of it, the people who only see the tree tend to accuse them of over-reaction or hyperbole. This is likely what will happen when people from the former group read what I have to say next.

I don't have a problem with the update. I do have a problem with Rogers withholding a service I pay for to force me to do the update. That makes them "Big Brother". It is not their place.

The people who only see the trees will say "Get over it, whiner, it's just a friggin update for your phone. Look, it fixes the really important 911 bug, and it gives you Sense UI, which is really really sweet. So, just do it and stop whining, trust me, you'll like it."

The people who see the forest, like me, see this; Rogers is forcing an update on to your phone that you have to take. If you don't they will withhold a service from you that you are still paying for until you do it. THIS TIME it's just Sense UI and a 911 fix... as far as we know. What about the next time? What about if Rogers and HTC cook up some other update in the future, maybe with more Rogers branding crap in it? What if they force an update that changes some functionality of the phone that you like now?

We now have a precedent. Rogers used a stick and a carrot. They said, take this update, or we will punish you until you do. By accepting that, and even thanking them for it, you are telling them that you are willing to take it.

Consider this:

1. We don't know how much testing this went through, so there may be errors and bugs we don't know about yet.
2. We don't know what else is in this update yet. There hasn't been enough time to go though it all.

Now, if they'd said we had a month to do the update, or even a week, before stopping data service, at least then there would be time to find out all the ramifications of the update. For anyone concerned about what might happen, too bad, you lose your data plan until you update.

Consider this: Fido customers are saying that after performing the update their phones are stuck on Roaming, and they don't have access to data. What other bugs will there be?

Ask yourselves this: What if your internet service provider did this? That's now a possible reality, given that Rogers is an ISP and they have already demonstrated a willingness to do this. What if your ISP wanted to install a patch or piece of software? Rogers specifically offers software to their internet customers for "protecting their PCs". What if Rogers made that mandatory, and threatened to cut off your internet access if you didn't do it?

What if Microsoft did it with Windows? What if Windows Update wasn't optional, but was mandatory and failing to update would cause Windows to stop working? Would you be mad then?

Those in the former group I described above will likely now accuse me of whining, of exaggerating, possibly even of being paranoid. Well, consider this, it has already happened. It happened this weekend when Rogers said "take this update, or we cut off your data".

I also did teh madatory upgrade for my wife on her new (my old) Dream.

Can you please answer the following questions (DREAM ONLY)?
1. Did it wipe out the phone? I.e. did you lose all your data that wasn't on SDCARD?
2. Can you please power off your phone. Hold camera button and while holding it down press and hold power button until it lights all up. This brings you to SPL. On top of the screen should be something like:

  • DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF
  • RADIO-3.22.20.17
  • HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA21000)
  • CPLD-4
  • Apr 20 2009, 15:30:43
Can you please type here what is on YOUR freshly updated DREAM?

When done press Send (the pick up the call) button and then Menu button. After that just power up your phone normally.

Thanks!!

@mjschmidt,
I understand and agree with you!

There are some people on XDA forums who report that they have been assured by Rogers support rep. that if the service goes off it's just a matter of a phone call asking them to put it back.

I'm writing this because I'm on FIDO and have CyanogenMOD and most likely will have to do this phone call on Monday.

I wish Rogers would at least give us the choice to update or not. There are tons of things we missing out on for no real reason.

I had a magic from rogers before upgrading to the dream and they disabled the on screen keyboard on the phone. This doesn't make sense. You couldn't even enable it in the options.. they totally removed the option. I don't know who is making all the decisions at Rogers as far as android goes but they have a few screws loose.

Anyway. rogers please leave the choice to us.

Can someone please explain in layman's terms what the Perfect SPL is and why it is a problem for rooting?

First batch of Dreams came with 1.33.2005 SPL. Was quickly hacked and rooted.
Late they came with 1.33.0010 SPL which is a.k.a. "perfect". Proved to be not so perfect and was hacked and rooted by the "one click root".

Seems like 20xx is engineering version (easy to root) and 10xx is for customers (easy to root as well :)).

Just stumbled across the offer today while searching the forum for something else (on the 911 "fix"). Not surprised to see no official word about the promo from Rogers - lucky to have this forum spreading the word.

Anyway, called Rogers right away and was told that the promo was on hold beacuse they were all out of Magics. Asked if I could get confirmation that the promo was extended (weak yes), but was told there would be no notification of when they had more in stock. Was told I could call back daily "if I wanted to", to check. She was polite and offered without prompting to put a note in my file. Sent a msg to RogersMary on Twitter, hope to get something more definitive than "I've put a note in your file, and I am sure you will be able to get the upgrade when we get more stock in". Whenever that might be.

Anybody else get the same from Rogers or get a better answer?

I did the update last night and all seemed to go well. Been playing around today getting used to the new features and the added real estate. One thing I noticed and not sure if I should be concerned is that when I am on Wi-Fi in my house and connected to my router the status bar at the top is still showing the 3G or H symbol at the same time. I don't believe it did this before. Does anyone else have the same thing and any worries that I am actually using data while I think I am on Wi-fi?

@mjschmidt

have you done the update yet?

---------------------

Crap.

Looks like I may have screwed myself.
I tried the sd method and the first part went well but after thatwhen it tries to boot it keeps splashing ROGERS then going away and attempts to boot over and over.

IF YOU ARE ROOTED DO NOT USE SD METHOD!!!!!

If anyone has any ideas on how to help it would be greatly appreciated.
