Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

Just stumbled across the offer today while searching the forum for something else (on the 911 "fix"). Not surprised to see no official word about the promo from Rogers - lucky to have this forum spreading the word.

Anyway, called Rogers right away and was told that the promo was on hold beacuse they were all out of Magics. Asked if I could get confirmation that the promo was extended (weak yes), but was told there would be no notification of when they had more in stock. Was told I could call back daily "if I wanted to", to check. She was polite and offered without prompting to put a note in my file. Sent a msg to RogersMary on Twitter, hope to get something more definitive than "I've put a note in your file, and I am sure you will be able to get the upgrade when we get more stock in". Whenever that might be.

Anybody else get the same from Rogers or get a better answer?

Not a better answer:

Your order is probably canceled, not on hold.

I placed my order on Jan 13. I called yesterday and customer support said my order was on hold. I called today and customer support said my order was canceled. I was also told anyone that did not receive a phone is simply out of luck, and existing orders will not be honoured.

This is what support told me. I hope this is not true.

Just a quick question after reading the Howard forums.

It seems that Rogers instructions are slightly incorrect. A poster (Placebo) stated that the ROM was installed after he enabled USB debugging on the phone. Roger's instructions requires unchecking USB debugging.

Anyone care to clarify?

ya I had to turn on Debugging mode to get it to work on my rooted magic

@mjschmidt,
I understand and agree with you!

There are some people on XDA forums who report that they have been assured by Rogers support rep. that if the service goes off it's just a matter of a phone call asking them to put it back.

I'm writing this because I'm on FIDO and have CyanogenMOD and most likely will have to do this phone call on Monday.

@Gnugu: Well, RogersMary herself posted in another thread that support will NOT turn data back on if you call.

Hi All - Just want to clarify something I've seen in a few spots.

All customers are being asked to upgrade this important 911 fix for Dream and Magic. Customer safety is the absolute priority. For those who do not download the s/w fix, internet access will be disabled until it has been completed. This will not impact voice or sms.

Customer Care **will not** re-enable access if the fix has not been implemented on your device. This will be automatically done within 24hrs.

Can you please answer the following questions (DREAM ONLY)?

Sure no problem!

1. Did it wipe out the phone? I.e. did you lose all your data that wasn't on SDCARD?

Hi yes it wiped out the phone.

2. Can you please power off your phone. Hold camera button and while holding it down press and hold power button until it lights all up. This brings you to SPL. On top of the screen should be something like:

  • DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF
  • RADIO-3.22.20.17
  • HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA21000)
  • CPLD-4
  • Apr 20 2009, 15:30:43
Can you please type here what is on YOUR freshly updated DREAM?

  • DREAM PVT 32B SHIP S-ON d
  • HBOOT-1.33.0010 (DREA21000)
  • CPLD-4
  • RADIO-3.22.26.17

I'm a long-time follower of this thread, hi!

#include appreciative comment about all the work Mike (et al.) have done.

I received my Magic in the mail very quickly, and just a day or two before the E911 problem reared its head.

I am getting used to the Magic's soft keyboard, but my wife hates it. (although she only gave it 5 minutes)

Last night I updated my Magic and my wife's Dream and my old Dream. All went quite well in the end. The PDF instructions weren't 100% accurate, but they were close enough to get the job done.

One quirk: The freshly installed HTC Sync caused my Windows XP machine to spontaneously reboot / BSOD. That was exciting. It seems to happen if I fiddle with the HTC Sync UI, but just using the USB link to the phone(s) seems to work fine.

Post firmware update...

The Dream doesn't appear to have changed, visibly.

There are many improved features I really like on the Magic:

  • The new keyboard (long-hold for symbols!)
  • The 7 (up from 3) desktop screens.
  • The new widgets.
  • The pinch and swipe interface in the Album.
  • The camera/video toggle.
  • It's significantly "snappier" than my Dream's sluggish interface.
  • A lot of little things.

Mike - I agree that the Rogers move to "force" us to do the upgrade by limiting our data connectivity is scary on several levels. Of course, had they not done that what percentage of people wouldn't have bothered with the upgrade? It must have been a tricky choice for them. Personally, I don't like the precedent it sets.

Same here.. That P.O.S. HTC SYnc app only works when USB debugging is turned ON.. Not sure why they asked for it to be turned off.

The update was a bighassle to apply because the upgrade required the awful HTC sync (which didn't work with cyanogen) So after a few hours of frustration - I found I had to restore to a stock ROM (used nandroid via Amon's recovery) to able to apply the upgrade.

Which for me is a downgrade from the latest 32a port of Cyanogenmod on Android OS 1.6. I especially miss Root.

Anyone know if this new OS / SPL is rootable? (yet?) I would be so very grateful if someone can figure that out!

On my unrooted magic, i did the update no problem with debugging off. Sounds like it only needs to be on if you are rooted from what I read.

Hello Community: Here is one I would love to have your opinions on.

First issue: No 1.6 for Dream

Bought Dream outright locked Rogers phone paid full pop. Asked if I could participate in the swap for the Magic, simple answer no. More detailed answer yes if you sign up for a three year contract. (WTF?)

Rogers states that Dream is essentially a deprecated device. No updates past 1.6 (if that) Only choice according to Rogers themselves is to Root the phone.

Second issue: 911 update - Mandatory

Did not update (reason below) , lost data support at approximately 11:00 am PT Sunday Jan 24. Called Rogers tech support - min 30 min wait. Data outage creates mission critical loss for clients I support, which was the intended purpose for the device in the first place.

RogersMary - "For those who do not download the s/w fix, internet access will be disabled until it has been completed." (WTF?)

Third issue: (unsubstantiated)

As I understand updating the 911 patch includes a command that makes it impossible to root your phone with out bricking it. (see issue 1 above)

Summary: Rogers sold me a phone for $600, won't support it after six months, won't exchange it without me committing to a 3 year term, takes me offline for not updating the 911 patch, the 911 patch will not enable me to root the phone which is the only way I might be able to get any value out of the device.

Is it just me or is this unconscionable?

It's pretty pathetic, I agree. From what I understand, based on reading a few of the posts since the update, the new firmware can still be rooted.

"Thanks! Tis means that it can be rooted!"

The other thing that seems to be happening is if your phone is already rooted, and has the 911 fix already, your data doesn't get turned off. I don't know if that is correct though.

@damageddave: I concur with all your points.

I hate to be a broken record but I've been on hold/transferred around Rogers' phone system for the past hour and need to rant!!!

First issue: No 1.6 for Dream
It pisses me off (now more than ever) that I've got 2 HTC Dreams in my house -- one from Rogers, the other from Google. The Google dev phone has been running 1.6 for more than a month with an OS updated downloaded directly from HTC's website. The bullshit about the hardware not being able to handle 1.6 is exactly that -- bullshit.

Second issue: 911 update - Mandatory
Rogers, if you would have just upgraded to 1.6 when it came out, there would be no emergency update!!

@jimrebello: There's no root process that works for the 911 update -- yet. I hope someone figures it out soon. I've already tried the old methods and whatever Rogers cooked into this release is the nasty stick-on stuff that's hard to get off.

Call #3: 09:45 -

Okay - taking the bull by the horns and not trusting Roger's to call me and say "hey - we fixed the 911 issue, here's your promised upgrade" - decided to call this morning and poke the bear.

Talked to Roger's sales rep... he did some searching for about 5 mins (while on the phone - not on hold - always nice). Looks like I need to transfer to some other department (tech activations or something). Transferring me over there.

On hold - man this music sucks.
3 minutes and counting.
4 minutes - some new message about checking online for details at Rogers.com - then... silence. How long do I wait to see if I just got hung up on by accident?
5 minutes - please continue to hold - next available consultant will be happy to help me.
7 minutes - glad I charged my portable phones last night. Still awaiting nirvana.
9 minutes - :|
13 minutes - you gotta be kidding me.
17 minutes - OMFG - they have 1 freaking person working there today and he/she is on break?!?!
19 minutes - talking to a guy finally. "So - have you done your upgrade?" - "No -that's why I'm calling". "The S/W upgrade?" - "uh - no I haven't yet, why?" - "Which upgrade are you calling about???" - "The upgrade from the Dream to the Magic" - "oohhhhh -that's not us, that's customer care centre"
*blank stare* (so to speak)

*sigh*

Transfer me BACK to customer care.

"Oh - I'm sorry sir, I notice you still have a corporate number on account"
"Uh - I used to be on one, but I switched plans with the retention dep't when I switched to the Dream"
"We'll have to transfer you to the corporate sales dep't - you'll be placed in priority sequence"

Note: There were lots of apologies from the various CSRs about how many times I've been on hold - I'm just not typing everything

"I'm sorry it's not letting me do the upgrade for you - mind if I put you on hold for 2-3 minutes??"

*sigh*

Sure - why the heck not.

43:00 mark of phone call

Vonage phone gives up the ghost (loss of reception temporarily) - hangs up on me. !$#$!@#$!@#

ANyways - call back - talk to guy in first minute:

"I'm sorry sir - it's showing that the offer is STILL on hold. I promise I will call you back when the offer is no longer on hold".

WTF - why would it still be on hold?!?!

Sorry for the long email - I didn't expect it to be this long at the beginning.
