Help Wi-Fi hotspot data usage

I tried WiFi hotspot on my phone for the first time a few weeks before. To make sure that I do not eat up my data allowance, which was just 500MB per month, as soon as I connected to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop, started monitoring the data usage on both the ends.

The network status dialog of my laptop showed me that I had used 500K after a few websites were visited. To my surprise (or shock) the 3G watchdog on the phone showed an increase of 2.5 MB from the last value. Left it for a while and checked again at both the ends. Now laptop says 800K and the phone says 4 MB. After a 3 hour session with very little browsing, the laptop showed around 3 MB of usage. But 3G watch dog reported a whopping 24 MB!

I am not bothered about what programs on my laptop used the network. As per the network status dialog, I see 3 MB. Even if there was a two way communication from the phone for network access thru WiFi hotspot, I should see a maximum of 6MB. But what I saw was a whopping 24 MB. Can anybody help me understand this? How much does it show just sitting there without the hotspot enabled?
Maybe you've just got loads of syncing going on.

when using the wifi hotspot, the phone will still sync your mails/facebook/twitter and godknows what else in the background, so both the laptop and the phone are using the data at the same time.....

Without the hotspot the usage was negligible. I checked this after switching the hotspot off. For the next 6 hours without the WiFi hotspot on, the data usage was just 2MB and that is my regular usage. Around 5-6 MB per day.

I do know that. All these took only 2MB on that day for that next 6 hours. After this I didn't count as the data usage was thru Wi-Fi at home later that day.

I too have a similar problem.

I created a wi-fi hotspot in my andriod phone and accessed the internet from my laptop. Suddenly my balance was 300 MB less. I closed the browser in my laptop and then was monitoring the balance with the wi-fi on. I could see that precisely 4 MB of data is getting used every few seconds. If I switch off the hotspot then there is no leakage.
In total I lost 400MB of data for nothing.

Can someone please advice

If you ask about rooting there will be 100s of replies. But tricky things like this does not get answered in most of the forums. :-(

I have found that if you use Bluetooth tethering, the connected devices use much less data. I'd try that.
