my captivate takes usually around 40 minutes sometimes around 50 to turn on!!!
I never turn my phone off unless it freezes or sometimes the lock screen messes up its orientation that i can't see half the numbers to unlock it.

this phone is not rooted, when i bought it i updated it to 2.2 that's it. I remember that the first time i turned it on it was quick. i don't remember if after 2.2 it started getting slow because i rarely turn my phone off anyways, the battery is dead by the time i sleep so i put it in the charge at night.

HELP ! if this phone is always going to be taking 50 mins to turn on i'm going to sell it and get something else. sometimes it freezes at important times and i'd have to wait 50 mins so i can resume my work , its pissing me off.

It could be any number of things. It could be delays waiting for whatever apps of yours are wanting to launch on startup. It could be the media scanning, if you have lots of pictures/music/videos... especially loaded on a MicroSD card.

It could be the RFS filesystem that Samsung uses for the internal and external SD cards, which is known to be slow. Being able to use something faster is a huge reason a lot of people move to custom hacked ROMs.

Without knowing which it is in your case, it's hard to say. Could be all 3 working together. Could be something else. Some process of elimination on your end will be necessary to figure it out. Does it happen after a full reset (which erases all your apps and data)? You can also use tools to see what apps are launching on boot. You can try moving off your pics/music/videos temporarily... and removing your MicroSD card if you have one. You can watch how long media scanner is taking on boot (tends to run twice). And so on.

i don't have a micro sd card, i use the internal 16 gb storage that the phone already has. the phone was slow to start up even before the music that i put on it, i maybe have only 100 songs on it right now, there's a bunch of pictures and short few second videos but those were all done recently so it has nothing to do with the startup times. the long startup time has been going on for a while.

when i turn on the phone, i get the rogers screen for a few seconds, the galaxy s screen , then it goes black then to show me the notification bar, the signal comes and goes, sometimes i even get texts and phone calls that drop when the signal suddenly disappears. it does media scanning every few times, i'm pretty sure its more than two times and the media scanning is quick.

the apps that i thing run on boot are the widgets and the launcher. the widgets are
facebook
music player
battery
fml
shazam
score mobile
weather
calendar
sticky notes

i think those are standard widgets that most people have on their phones. i don't see why i would need to modify the rom and root it to get the performance that i expect.... 40 minutes minimum to turn on is a bit unreal from stock rom in my opinion.

Not necessarily. I removed most of those even when I ran stock. And I think some are Rogers-specific.

I'm not disagreeing with you, and yes 40 mins is unusual... I'm just telling you the reality of the situation, and the reality is that Samsung invented their own filesystem called RFS which they are addicted to using as a result of it being their baby, despite its well-known horrible performance. Other filesystems are faster. All those "lagfixes" you read about are nothing more than replacing RFS with something better (which unfortunately requires a custom ROM since there's no support for "something better" in the stock kernel, so the process is drastic).

As bad as RFS is, a stock phone should not take that long to boot, though. If you don't remember what you might have added or changed when the problem began, have you tried a factory reset yet? You will lose your data so make sure you have backups, but it's a critical first step to diagnosing the issue and trying to figure it out (and hopefully fix it).

From there you'd want to restore files/apps selectively, slowly, and one by one, then carefully track at which point the problem resurfaces (if it ever does).

the widgets come with every app you download isn't that how it is ?

well if i install a lag fix or a custom rom does that kill the warranty ? or i will be able to return it to stock rom if i want to send it in ?

what custom rom would you recommend for this phone ? i've tried to read around but its confusing and there's really no section for a beginner like me.

I just tried to turn my phone on without the sim card in and it pretty much halfed the start up time to around maybe 15-20 minutes. then i just slipped the sim card in and flipped airplane mode on and off to get the signal working. what does that mean ?

how do i backup my phone ? the kies software is crap and i want to backup all the text messages and contacts that i have.

No.

Yes.

Yes.

Serendipity has been my choice, but there are several other contenders worthy of serious consideration.

i've tried to read around but its confusing and there's really no section for a beginner like me.

Then you may realize that beginners shouldn't be futzing with custom ROMs. Only after you've done a ton or two of homework should you consider entertaining the feat.

Yeah, this has been happening to me the entire time I've owned my phone. It only seems to happen if I turn the phone off/the phone dies while password protected. If I disable the password, the phone will start up just fine. Wtf? This is honestly the most annoying problem I've ever had with a piece of technology.
