Root (Q) radio

What is the radio for? Like when im in hboot and under s off it says radio and what version it is 1.07. And i read some people updating there radio but what is that for?

You can flash a radio to get better service if you have issues. Usually it isn't really necessary unless you live in a bad service area. Sometimes it will help with battery issues also.

Ohh ok. Cause i was thinking radio? Like music lol. Wasnt sure. so i know there is an update out there to 1.08. Not sure if i should flash it.

If it's anything like the Evo, as the Shift develops a history of updates over time, there will be updates for Radio and Wimax. These updates will ultimately pair to the roms they accompany, and you'll want to keep radio+wimax+rom in sync. Today, it's not an issue.

Meanwhile - like 330D said - don't fix it if it ain't broken.

I'm in frequent areas where I roam a lot and my service isn't that great.. one example is my home. It's a brick house but I only get service in certain spots in my room, and to make a call I would have to use my bluetooth and have my phone laying flat on my desk. Would doing a radio update (if there are any) help this problem? If so how do I go about doing it? I am running GB rooted, stock rom/kernel (since no customs are made yet of course).

Here's the latest radios for the Shift [RADIO] HTC Evo Shift 4G Radios [PG06IMG.zip] (Updated: 16 June 2011) - xda-developers

I have the updated radios and my data speeds/signal seem to be a little better.. but it may just be a placebo affect.

If you flash these radios be sure to check the md5sum.. A bad flash could brick your phone. A known issue when flashing is not being able to get past the HTC splash screen, if this happens remove the zip from the root of your sd and restore your nandroid.

Thanks for the info. There are two download links for the newest radio - one without wimax and one with wimax.

WiMax is 4g if I'm not mistasken? I'm nowhere near 4g and have never used it, so should I just go with the first one? Or just go ahead with the second anyway (incase I come across a 4g area in the future)?
