To switch or not to switch...

So I'm just about ready to retire my old Eris (girl is still running like a champ though, even if she does have a pretty severe limp) and really want to pick up an X2. I've ready pretty much every forum post both here and droidforums.net, and am really concerned about the issues (reboots, lag, memory issues, sound popping, video recording problems, bad viewing angles on the screen -which I've seen for myself @ the VZ store, etc)... concerned enough that I'm considering the Inc2 instead.

Given all of the issues, the X2 has some great features that I think could make this a better phone than the Inc2 for the next 2 years'ish: dual core processor, HDMI out, bigger + higher res screen, just to name a few.

I've read the memory performance tweaks thread and it seems like a pretty straight (enough) forward solution for the time being. I've heard that rooting is pretty simple now with gingerbreak, but haven't heard too much about re-flashing back to stock in the case that I want to return the phone and don't want to let VZW know that I rooted it.

Any info/advice here?

I love my x2 and after an easy root Ive been able to keep available memory just over 100 mb. I Do think The INC2 has a beautiful design and has less bugs than the x2. Probably the two most enticing factors for the INC2 with of course more ram. But like you said The dual core processor and hd display could let the x2 receive more OS updates and last longer. Thats how I made my decision to go with the x2. But everyone is different. Hope it helps!!!

Thanks for the reply, rank. I'm leaning towards the X2, but what might be the deal breaker for me is the ease of un-rooting (so to speak).

I'm willing to give the root/memory script a go, but I don't want to not be able to return my phone because big red knows it was rooted.

Is it possible/easy to flash back to factory default?

I just ditched my Eris for the X2 a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier. The reboots are so infrequent that they don't even annoy me. Not to mention that rebooting only takes a few seconds on this phone. The only annoying issue I've had was lag, which hasn't been a problem since rooting and running the speed script.

Like ohwell says, you can just as easily unroot by rerunning gingerbreak. everything is much simpler than the Eris.

Seems the D3 might be a better option:

Same high res display and initial reports are the 4"size looks even better.

No MP3 audio pops (Motorola has given no sign they will fix this)

7.1 GB more internal storage.

400 MB more app storage

4430 is a newer and slightly better chipset.

About 40 MB more free ram, due to less chipset allocation. Not much extra, but helps.

Keyboard is apparently fantastic- I would use mainly for game emulators.

Has Gingerbread now, rather than a September-ish wait.

The two dings compared to the DX2 are a .3" smaller display and no FM radio.
