Rogers Update: 911 Fix for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic is Ready

Good point. I have stopped trying to root :p the "nor should I have to be" was meant to pertain to this rogers update, not rooting in general. Sorry for the confusion.

I do however chalk-it-up to trying to do it with win7 64bit as the USB drivers seem to cause trouble in both the SDK and HTC sync, so I couldn't run ADB commands :(

Suddenly it appears to be a lot easier and the right thing to do, eh? ;)

Don't blow up your phone. If you want to have fun then find a $50 v1-4 or L Linksys router and learn to make it do backflips. Old crappy NAS units are fun to hack to be something useful. Lots of less risky hardware to play with.

Then think about multi boot on the pc so you can run a *nix OS for these kinds of things. USB/Java/ADB/WiFI etc work a lot nicer on them once you learn how. Hardly a driver in sight, it just works.

(Or plug the PC's DVI port into the tv's HDMI port and have fun. I did a screencast of the phone over ADB and it saved a high res movie that played beautifuly on the big screen. A full vertical height movie of the phone in action was hilarious and looked great)

I'm still pissed off... still awaiting the completion of this FORCED ROM update.

So, I have installed the HTC Sync but it will not connect to my Android phone. It remains disconnected so I am not sure what to do about that! BTW, I am connected via USB and I can even successfully mount the volume and see my microSD card. I big SARCASTIC thank you to HTC for providing excellent help!

In the instructions for this update, I noticed the following text:
>BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
>1. Allocate approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
Not including 3 hours to download the ROM update!

>5. Backup your personal data: All personal data (contacts, applications,
>photos, bookmarks, etc) stored on the device will be lost after the
>update process. There are also 3rd party applications on Android Market place
>to back up your applications and personal data.

ROGERS Please tell us how to obtain a backup app from the Market! You disabled our DATA service (WITHOUT WARNING!). Since Android doesn't offer any other way to obtain apps, I guess a lot of people are stuck!

Fortunately, I already have an app to backup my Android but I do wonder how many others are affected by this nonsense. I'd upload an app for others to use but I do not have an FTP site at this time.

So, can anyone offer any tips on how to get HTC Sync to recognize my HTC Dream on Windows Vista 32bit? Thank you

For anyone thinking about contacting Rogers for a "network reset" as a few posts have suggested... too late, they've caught on.

I just tried calling Rogers (went through iPhone support) and as soon as I mentioned a network reset, the CSR identified I had an HTC Dream and told me he'd just received SPECIFIC instructions not to perform network resets on the Magic or Dream until further notice.

It`s brutal that we're having to finding ways to "trick" our service provider into providing the service they took away from us, with about a day's notice... and will not give it back to us until we apply an update that wipes out our phones, and cannot be applied on (at this point) roughly 30% of the PCs out there. What were they thinking?!

If this "911" is such a legal issue, I'd glad sign a waiver regarding that... especially for us rooters who aren't even impacted by the issue, but are being hit the hardest.

I've been a Rogers customer for 10+ years, and aside from some upgrade headaches, they've been decent for me. The way they're going about this update, however, has me seriously questioning where customer service is headed... and how much longer they'll keep me as a customer.

As long as you already have some kind of file manager/apk installer, you can download the .apk for mybackup pro here. Drop it onto your SD card and open/install it.

Since I am unfamiliar with MyBackup, I thought I would check it out. Unfortunately, this app is expired and/or will not run without a network connection.

Fortunately, I am backed up with Astro (which is a free app backup/restore app).

Unfortunately, I don't know how to get this app outside of the market. :(

OK...blatant hijack of the thread but have to ask. I sold a couple of linksys wrt54g routers to a guy who said he was going to "hack" them. What kind of functionality could you possibly add to that sort of router?

Yes, this is a hijack.

Not really wanting to continue with OT conversion... but here you are... it might be Tomato that you are referring to (this is the best firmware replacement IMO): Tomato (firmware) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I thought the 4 or 5 text messages were a pretty good warning of what was going to happen.

As long as you have a wifi you can get apps still.

Going on hour 7 downloading this rom...... 106.3 MB.... wtf

Cool....although I doubt I need to build my own robot with a scrapped router

I had a similar problem prior to the upgrade.

If you start your phone do you go from the first HTC screen, the Rogers logo then it hangs on the second HTC screen?
It is, however I think I figured it out, just had to use my old dream as an expensive card-reader, also have to re-download zip 2 again, so it'll take a while to see if I have the right idea.

I did a wipe back to the factory load and started from scratch....knock on wood haven't had a problem since

I'm having the same problem. I used the instructions but now my phone is stuck in a reboot loop after I ran the first update. I tried a factory reset (hold down home and back and press the power button?) but it's not working. How did you get it to work, valsung?

I haven't got it to work just yet, but I think you need to have the 2nd zip on the card, without using the phone itself to put the file on the sd card, once you have the second one and follow the instructions again I (only hope) it works. Since nowhere in the instructions does it say to turn it on fully, I just rebooted it to try and use the phone to mount and copy the file to the sd card, but found out about the endless reset loop.
