Finally gave up!

Flame away....But I finally gave up and am trying the iOS route with an iPhone 4.

I started out with the OG, and LOVED that phone. It was probably the most enjoyable phone I ever had...rooted, always something new!

I decided to give that one to the wife to replace her crappy Eris and go with the new Thunderbolt.

All was rosy (except battery life which was to be expected and quite frankly got better with time for me)....until April!

The OTA update in April caused for me like many (but not apparently all) others terrible GPS lock (average 5-6 minutes) roughly 6 random reboots daily and crazy 3g,4g,1x and no signal in and out issues.

As of Monday....I still had not received the update many others report to have gotten. I checked for updates and nothing, called Verizon and they act like they don't know for sure when and what to expect.

They even suggest I call HTC...Hello, who did I buy the phone from and who do I pay monthly?

So off I go.

I really think Android is superior in MANY ways to iOS, but my opinion is it's way to fractured. Too many updates that cause problems historically, too slow to fix problems they cause, too many versions...some get and others do not (Gingerbread, etc).

They need to consolidate and get their act together..so much potential, but too many fingers in the pie IMO.

This is not a bash to Android, but some of you have to admit...these problems they can't seem to solve in a timely manner are unacceptable.

Every smartphone I've owned had bugs and glitches HR first year. The issues get resolved. Tue iPhone isn't for me. I don't like the screen lighting up when i get a message. I don't like itunes, love Google products.

The rebooting issue was annoying but it's fixed now. I have no complaints now.

I agree and understand bugs and glitches, but when they create a problem, they need to roll out a fix ASAP, not 3 months later. You know Verizon is blaming HTC for the fix delay, but in the "fix" update, there is additional Verizon bloatware, so it seems to me they bear some responsibility for the delays as well.

I totally agree, iPhone notifications SUCK...Hopefully they fix that in iOs 5, and I deplore iTunes as well, in fact...the wife and I switched to Zunes a year ago and like them a lot better (too bad they're going the way of the doo-doo bird).

I think Android is superior in many ways....just way too fractured...Nature of the beast I guess.

The bad of iOS is it's way too locked down and controlled. The good of that, is that "control" seems to give you a phone that may have some dumb features....seems to actually work....Jury's still out though!

I don't like Apple very much but I recommend the iPhone to almost everyone who asks my opinion on what to buy except for IT geeks who never need to ask. It is a wonderful smartphone, very capable and yet simple enough for my grandmother to use.

But you may as well wait for the new iPhone at this point. ... unless maybe you're thinking it might be too buggy? I don't think it will, but if that's your concern, you could wait an extra week or two. In the meantime, if your TB is unusable, chances are good that a CLNR might perform better.

At least it isn't a Samsung product.

Try a Galaxy S for a while and then see what you think of HTC.

iOS works reasonably well, but the iPhone sux bawlz on AT&T. My GF cant make or take a call under most circumstances on her iPhone 4.

With my custom Thunderbolt, everything is much better than stock or iPhone 3/4. Except the battery life. My former Nokia had four day standby and 18 hour talk time. but, it sucked for data services. <shrug>

why not just manually flash the update. takes like 10 minutes. it wipes data but it will get rid of all your issues.

i have had probably one of the worst experiences with my TB and there is still no way i could ever go to an iphone 4. tiny screen, locked into iTunes, fragile, not easily customizable, no free navigation, no widgets. i will gladly take androids little quirks to stay away from apple. been there, done that, glad to be away from it.

Ok so u got an iphone did u really need to post? shouldve just swtched and ran away without another word. ENJOY UR CRAPPLE!

Just trying to relay my experience with Thunderbolt and the issues involved. The purpose of the post was not to promote Apple...I have been very anti-apple over the years - but I personally think I was pushed to try something else - but with all of the choices - who knows what will turn out good or bad. The Thunderbolt was GREAT...until they broke it!

I don't know if Apple will be better overall or worse....I already miss ALOT of the Android goodies but so far the phone is working...which is an improvement over the Thunderbolt!

Why would you be flamed. It would appear that the TB just isn't right for you, maybe even being an early adopter might not be right. You came in made a thought out grammatically correct post and said what you disliked.

We flame the people that come in and go, OMGWTFBQQROFLCOPTER I don't like the TB because it tried to rape my Granny and you shouldn't like it because you should follow what I think because my opinion is the only on e that matters. That you did not do.

Not everything is going to be a fit for every person. I myself couldn't take an iPhone, not that I think they are shit, I just don't like them.

Let me borrow your logic and shove it right back in your face for a second: Okay you don't like his post. Fine. Did you really need to post just to complain about the fact that he posted complaining about something he didn't like? You're creating a tornado of hypocrisy i'm afraid will swallow up this entire forum if you don't stop now.

I agree and understand bugs and glitches, but when they create a problem, they need to roll out a fix ASAP, not 3 months later.

I wasn't even one of the affected in the last last update with the random reboots and i can 100% support this. There's no excuse and you have every right to be pissed off. As much as i'm not about apple, when they have a bug or a problem that's affecting alot of users, they work on it NOW and put that shit out. One of the perks i enjoyed when i had my iPhone

Then again, the part that stops me in my tracks is i have no idea who i can rightfully blame: htc for not putting out the update or verizon for holding it back? What if HTC had the update ready a week after the reboot issue surfaced but verizon dragged their feet only to stall for 3 months finishing up the bloatware they wanted to include? This is where apple does it right. Everything's in house. They want to update, they don't have to ask anyone's permission. They put it out. So if you're looking for a more streamlined/efficient/bug free process, iphone's the way to go.

There will be others that feel the need to down your decision because in some of their minds, it's iphone vs android and the inability to enjoy both. "Ya gotta pick yur side gahdammit!". And then there's the constant justifications of "wait...he's leaving thunderbolt like there's something wrong with it. My phone doesn't feel cool anymore. Gotta go into denial mode and fight this bad PR against my precious cell phone!"

People...it's a cell phone! If you're going away from android for awhile, iphone's definitely the way to go. They're doing so much right right now it's crazy. If it had a bigger screen, hell i'd probably try one again. Good luck with your decision man. And don't fall into that fanboy mindset while you're there. Play with everything

I was an iphone user from the first day of the first iphone.I moved and ATTs crappy signal didnt like my new location. I got the TB because:

1. Verizon better coverage
2. Larger screen
3. 4G
4. easy tethering

Likes:

open market place, great screen layout. awesome functions of TB

Dislikes;

quirkiness( random reboots- now solved, some apps do random things
horrible music sync choices
lack of seamless integration with PC/Mac

I am keeping it !!

Captain...

I really appreciate your post. I have enjoyed this forum ALOT over the years, and although I haven't posted much, I read almost everything and have learned a great deal especially when I was tinkering with the Droid.

As I said, the Droid was easily the most enjoyable phone, maybe the most enjoyable piece of electronics I have owned in a long time. Once rooted it was so customizable that every day could be a new day...it never got stale to me. Really the only thing that drew me to the Thunderbolt was the bigger screen and the newness which had worn off of the Droid's exterior!

That being said...I assume I could continue to use the Droid in WiFi only..maybe let my daughter use to to "have a phone" without actually being able to make calls?

Thanks again...Steve

I applaud the OP for the taking the step and ditching the TB. It was the right choice for the OP! I have been contemplating making a switch to an Inc2, but I'm going to stick it out until GB arrives and see if that makes any difference. My biggest issue is that the advertised phone before release is not what I have in my hands right now - no video chat amongst other things.

The blame for delays lies squarely on the shoulders of Verizon. CaptainObvious is right - they like to tinker with the updates that they receive from the manufacturers - Apple/HTC. For instance, the iPhone4 on AT&T is currently running iOS 5... while the Verizon iPhone4... is still running iOS 4.2.8 - which is how many iterations of iOS in the past? The common denominator here with delayed OS/firmware upgrades is Verizon.

I seriously considered an iPhone. I even asked my Apple buddies about it. Then I remembered... iTunes... iTunes... No. That software is such a pain in the a**. That alone kept me away. I wouldn't care about jailbreaking it. The iPhone already has what I root my Android phones for anyway, no bloat and screenshots.

I forgot I had another line with an upgrade available so I picked up a Droid 3. Waiting for root, but in the meantime I am happy with it. The Thunderbolt needs to be unrooted and sold at some point. In the end it was the battery life that did it.

I'm a little surprised that you jumped so soon, over not getting an answer to an update issue. Granted, I never had reboot issues, so the update wasn't something I was desperate to get on day one. But eventually, even after a few days of the disappearing Check New symptoms, it came through. A few people on here had mentioned that they were probably rolling them out in waves, not all at once, so I personally would've just given it another few days to see if you got it.

Other than that though, I'm not much of an Apple fan myself. And listening to some of the reasons you've given for not liking them as much, I would've imagined you would've tried like, the Inc2, waited for the D3 to get here (now), instead of locking yourself down to the iOS. They are stable, just not as customizable out of the box.

Yes, we could go back and forth... if you're gonna jailbreak it to make it better, why not just root the TB to get the update, etc. But I do hope it works out better for you going this route! And perhaps the next big thing will sway you back in due time :p
