Root **updated**root method for GingerBread use at your own risk*

this is good info. However i just want to warn people of this

Disclaimer: This is a one-time release. Unless a problem can be identified with the changes mentioned above (rooting, deodexing, etc), it will not be updated or supported. In other words, use this as-is or find a ROM which uses this release as its' base if you would like support and/or expect to see changes.

reading through that post it seems like there are other roms about to drop for the Dinc2 based off of the GB build. However unless i'm missing something i still don't see a safe recovery method in case you brick your device. Does anyone else have any info on that?

I'm not rooted, but I would suggest keeping the RUU for the official GB release on the root drive of your SD card. If all else fails, follow the instructions (RUU download available as well) here to boot your phone into HBOOT and at least get the stock flavor of GB back.

Maybe not ideal, but I think that it would at least allow you to un-brick your phone

just got my I2 today, and it's already downloading (very slowly) a 'firmware update' which I assume is the OTA GB update. I will be rooting it, but of course will be patient and wait for the devs to work with the new OTA GB update. but, can you explain the slightly confusing posts I've been reading here and other places re: rooting the I2? I've read that despite promising to release phones with unlocked bootloaders, htc released the I2 with a locked bootloader... but that this has been overcome with a rather complicated work-around. does anyone reading this believe that an 'easier' root might be achieved now that an official OTA GB update has been released? in other words, if I wait a few weeks to root, will I find that it will be easier than it is now? thank you!! I'm moving to the I2 from a rooted cyanogenmod'ed eris, and I'm eager to get my hands dirty :)

Today I put my crappy LG Ally into a bootloop upgrading my velocity Rom. So I decided to go into VZW and get a Dinc 2. Well anyways when the representative was setting up my new phone he decided to update to the new GB 2.33. If I were to do a factory reset would it take me back to before he updated it so I can root it? Or is there anyway to go back? I'm sorry for the very noob question. But I just wanna get this thing rooted!

Sorry, no way to go back. That's why it's so important to avoid the upgrade. The problem with the official upgrades is that each version has to be exploited for root separately. Usually it takes a while to find the exploits, so you have to get while the gettin's good.

Once you have root, regardless of how it was obtained, you can get the "official" versions of a ROM, which are essentially the same thing as the OTA updates. Or you can go with a custom ROM to get different features that stock gingerbread or froyo (or whatever) don't offer.

The confusion with losing root when installing an OTA update comes from the convenient way custom ROMS are (usually) set up. A lot of them won't let you receive the update notifications, thereby protecting you from yourself. Because if you WERE to install an official (not "official"... the quotes are important) update, you would lose root.

I'm a noob with Android, as well as with rooting, so I'm trying to follow along with this thread.

I've got the OTA GB update. From my understanding, there is currently no way to root my phone. Correct or incorrect.?

That being said, for some reason, the Gmail app on my phone is not working. It is not listed under Home | All Apps. It IS listed under Settings | Applications | Manage Applications | All. What is the problem here and how do I fix it so I can get my phone working, especially since I'm assuming I cannot root the phone.

If I can root the phone, how do I do it, and how do I fix this problem?

Apologies if I posted in the wrong thread, I saw one problem as tangential to the thread itself.

try uninstalling your gmail app and then reinstalling it.

Correct. Right now there is no way to root from the OTA gingerbread.

I have read a couple of threads recommending a factory reset after the update to fix some small bugs. I am not on GB myself so I can't comment personally, but I have used this trick for issues after upgrading to Eclair on my Eris. Seems so long ago.....

Just got forced to download another software update ota... Was hoping maybe a downgrade, because of all the small bugs that GB has, giving htc time to fix it,and me time to root. But no it wasnt. Thinking about getting the XTC clip. What are the problems with never being able to get s-on again?

It's my understanding that not being able to "s-on" the phone again would lead to problems if you need to return the phone for any reason. VZW will know the phone has been tampered with and, since this directly voids the warranty, they can then refuse to replace it.

I very well may be mistaken though, so please, someone with more knowledge on the subject feel free to correct me.

Yeah, it would void my 1 year warranty through HTC. But would it void my insurance I pay for every month through verizon? I replaced my ally with a custom rom on it with the insurance. So I would think they would have said something about that.

It really depends if they notice, i've heard of people sending rooted/rom'd phones back without hassle, but i've also heard of people getting a phone call a few weeks after they sent their phone in and informed that they were being charged the full retail price for the replacement because the original phone had been tampered with.

But I always tell people if you're going to do the insurance thing you should file a lost claim instead of exchanging... it costs the same amount and you get to keep your original phone for tinkering.

Has anyone tried unrevoked and AlphaRev's Revolutionary which just came out a little bit ago? It's a developer preview but anyone can download and try it. Is there any chance this might work?

Fre3vo works on an exploit then gives it to alpharev. Until fre3vo finds the exploit for temp root there is no possible way for alpharev to make a perma root.

If you have 2.3.3, it won't work. As of now the only way to root 2.3.3 is with a XTC clip (hardware method). Hopefully someone will find an exploit, or at least get temp root for it.
