Root which ROM to use?

Hi, I placed an order for one of these mostly cuz it was the cheapest android phone of decent quality I could find, this will be my first but I have had an android tablet for some time now.

I got to thinkin hey I would like me some nifty unofficial features so I found my way too these fourms but I see there are many ROMs to choose from and I cannot know which ones run stable, give me nice features and don't break stock functions

So which one is the best?

Its really a matter of personnal choice just need to do research, I know CyanogenMod 7 is stable, and really all that doesnt work is blutooth headsets and the battery life might be a bit lower than official 2.1 but it runs alot smoother than official 2.1

But as I say its just personnal preferance just do your research of the differant versions there should be a list of any broken features of them all somwhere

depends if you want 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

I recomend using CyanogenMod 7, its fast, reliable and has a ton of new features.

well I guess once the phone comes in I'll just try out a few different ones and see how it goes for me.

I'm a little curious about the higher clock speeds too, decreased battery life would be expected there obviously but I don't wanna end up setting it too high to the point where the phones overheats and or becomes damaged.

I know there are basic things but its hard to dive into these things head first on your own and I would like a better understanding now so I can hit the ground running once it comes in.

Anything upto about 825Mhz should be fine, I have mine on 825 and havent noticed any problems, CyanogenMod 7 comes with a built in overclocking feature as well, not sure about any other custom ROMs

I had overclocked mine to 825MHz and it crashed twice, putting it down to 728MHz makes it run smooth, fast and no noticeable battery loss.

Unless you need to use a wireless headset, that is. That unfortuanately is a showstopper as far as I'm concerned.

The only other thing I can think of is that installing custom roms will void your warranty, and just make sure you follow any instructions carefully and there shouldnt be any problems

I installed CyanogenMod 7 v1.9, then I found release candidates for 2.0 here. I am wondering of some of this would work better?

I keep my Cyanogen version upto date, i am currently running RC2 and haven't noticed any problems, your best bet would be to install through recovery, providing you installed through recovery, just long press the power button tap reboot then select recovery and ok. You need to download the file from the recovery link, then open the zip file, there will be a second zip file the second zip needs to be copied to your sd card.

The phone will boot into clockwork recovery, use the volume buttons to navigate the menu, the call button to select an option, and the end call/power button to go back.

Go to install zip from sd card (not apply update from zip) then choose zip from sd card, scroll to the zip you just added and hit the call button and it will install the update while keeping your data, then just hit the end call /power button and select reboot system now to boot into your new version.

why in rc2 recovery link is file name: update-cm-7.1.0-RC1-signed ,NOT RC2?

Im not sure but the version will say Swiftdroidd v2.0 preRC2 when you install it, and it will work fine

one thing they didn't tell you is that the zoom function on the camera app becomes broken with SwiftDroid, and thats kind of a deal breaker that should have been listed

If its the stock camera app, if your holing the phone in landscape, on the bottom right there will be a 1x, if you tap that a slider pops up to zoom.

yeah I know how it works but when you take the picture the resulting image is not zoomed.

Hmmm just checked that on my phone and its the same, never noticed it before now, you running RC2? could be a problem with RC2 if you are, i'm sure it used to work on RC1.

I would try downloading a differant camera, to see if the bug is in the stock app or a problem with CM

yeah the bug is present in every camera app I used so it seems the problem is in the camera drivers.

Well Cyanogen is constantly in development so if Mu4ik knows about the bug it will prolly get fixed sometime.

he dose mention making the camera better at some point in the future but what he plans to do in particular is not known, the bug is not listed so I do not know if he is aware of it or not.
