Help Battery life and battery management

Does it save my battery to leave WiFi on if I have a network in range? My friend said to leave it off to save battery and use the 3G radio instead. Not sure what to do.

Wifi always takes less power than 3G. Now, if you don't have a wifi network in range, it will save a little power not having your wifi on. Because the wifi will turn on, scan for a wifi network it knows, won't find it, and clicks off. It does that every few minutes. But 3G/4G take a lot of power to run. If you can connect to wifi you trust, always do it to get your phone off of 3G/4G. It'll save you juice.

Are there any retail stores that sells this extended battery? I'd rather buy with confidence, knowing that I can return it in a matter of a few hours, rather than be at the mercy of the US Postal service and some online store.

Why not just order it from www.seidoonline.com ? They have been super responsive to my questions and from what I have seen they are extremely quick doing any RMAs. I didn't see it from Amazon or anything either. I'd just go to the Seido website and click livechat and ask what retailers might have this. The live chat guys are ballers.. told me the exact mm thickness of the cases for the evo3d and even sent me pics of the fit.

completely wrong advice from your friend. wifi is a huge battery saver. Get on wifi whenever you can (as long as you can trust the hotspot).

I know others have said that you shouldn't have your phone polling for wifi networks, but because wifi communications is already so efficient, even the regular polling doesn't impact the battery life much. I like knowing when I step into a business if there's wifi. I don't want to have to manually scan for it wherever I go.

3G is a huge battery drain. When the iPhone 3G was first released, a LOT of people complained about poor battery life. Not wanting to admit that the iPhone 3G's flagship feature was the culprit, people threw around a lot of bad advice. among them was to avoid wifi at all costs. That might be where your friend got his/her info. Here's someone who got it right:
Surprise! Use Wi-Fi instead of 3G to save iPhone battery life | TechBlog | a Chron.com blog

It's very easily proven that all other things being equal, wifi is a huge power saver over 3G. test for yourself.

Silly question, maybe... Would a battery designated to work with the Sensation work in our EVO 3D? I believe I read in XDA in a thread a while back that the battery in the EVO 3D worked in the Sensation, but I was wandering if the reverse was true as well. As they are having success with an Anker 1900 mAH one that is priced fairly decently.

Is it possible to turn the 3g radio off and still get texts/calls?

3g/mobile data doesn't affect calls or texts, unless it's a multimedia message. They're on different radios.

This is counter to what I've heard... my understanding is that the CDMA radio in the phone handles 1x voice/data as well as 3G transmissions and the only difference between the two is the way the data is encoded/decoded when sent/recieved. I've heard others state this on this forum (EarlyMon) and it appears consistent with the little research I've done of the CDMA protocol.

So this means that the only way to turn off the CDMA radio is to switch to airplane mode.

So, on CDMA phones you can turn off data sync, but the cdma radio is still running in the background polling to send/recieve texts and phone calls.

It's surprising how much of an effect turning off data sync has on battery life. I'm not sure why that is. The only explanation I've come up with is that there is a good deal more data sync going on in the background then I would have expected and the CDMA radio is fairly efficient when polling for texts/phone calls but not so efficient when actually sending/recieving data.

It is true that Voice and SMS will still work if you disable 3G. But it's not true that 3G and 2G are different radios. It's one radio, but it can only be in 2G mode or 3G mode at any given time.

This is why you can't have simultaneous voice and data at the same time. However, the wifi radio is a separate radio. Therefore you can use data through wifi while on a phone call (2G mode). The same is true with 4G; it is a separate radio.

Seconded. Great products and great customer service.

I have the 3500mah for the 4G and the 4000mah for the 3vo. <3 them!

I'm loving this data off feature. Through smart use of it I can get 19 hrs with over 3hrs of display on time, including an hour of netflix, and an hr of talking, some texting and surfing and still have 15% battery left.

I use wifi whenever at home and the battery life is far better than with data on.

I also just realized there is a widget for data off on my OG EVO as well. Comes in handy.

But I did try 4G on both phones with mobile data turned off and it seemed weak, was it me or is there a piggy back antenna on the 4G aspect?

Thanks for clearing that up. I got my info from a "respected" source.

So I just picked up my Evo 3D last night and i'm a little overwhelmed trying to get my phone to operate the way I would like it to. I charged my phone fully this morning, turned off my mobile networks and connected to wifi, have my brightness set to %25, and limited updates for my apps to every 4 hours...my battery is already down to 62% and its only been about 3 hours. Is this normal? What else should I do to conserve battery? I have read through all of your posts and am trying to do what everyone is saying but I am getting a little overwhelmed and thought maybe if I have everything in one place it will be easier for me. Thanks for your help in advance I really appreciate it!

This seems abnormal to me. Are you playing alot of words with friends or angry birds?

Go to Settings > About Phone > Battery and tell us the Up Time and Awake time. If these are very similar you and you are NOT on the phone that much then it is possible you have an app that is keeping the phone awake. Once you note that, click on Battery Use and tell us what values come up. For me, my display is around ~65%, Words with friends 9% and netflix around 5% after a day. I have email updates every 30 mins while at work.

I regularly get through an entire work day and then some checking my phone fairly frequently for words with friends against my fellow bored office dwellers.

It just dropped from 62 to 58 in like 20 min
and I am not playing any games at all or words with friends

I'd keep on using it and charging it for another few days. If I recall my first charge of the battery did not last for the whole day either. It may just be that simple. Those values look fairly normal. My phone is Up 2:15, awake 50 mins 42% display 12% pandora from streaming music. What I have noticed is that the green light to indicate complete charge is not 100% accurate so I usually just plug my phone in around 10 pm and leave it plugged in overnight. (this does not harm the battery)

I'll second that. The batteries don't exactly work optimally until after maybe 5 charges or so.

Also an update on my Seidio 4000mah extended life battery. Holy crap this thing lasts forever. I'm a pretty heavy user with streaming music and gps etc and I've rarely even gotten it below 60%, and that's with some very long days. Highly recommended.

Are there cases that go with that battery? I would hate to carry that thing around bare.

25-30 minutes of 3g web surfing drains my battery about 10-15%. This is also true for internet intensive apps like facebook. Do you have a similar experience with your EVO 3D? Also, I tested my EVO 3D against my girlfriends Fascinate using Google nav and a quick drive to the burrito shack and my phone used about 2 times as much of its battery as hers to guide me to the same destination. Typical? What are your thoughts

This sounds like my phone as well. I've also noticed my wife's LG Optimus S loads certain data apps faster than my 3D.
