Photon or Galaxy S2

What is making you choose the Photon over the EVO 3D?

For starters I think 3D is gimmicky. I know you dont ever have to use it, but its still there. Its a world phone and I travel a good bit. I love the 16gb on board along with up to 32 gb sd card option. Make changes to documents for work related stuff. Kickstand. Dedicated camera button ( i know 3vo has this ). Lastly, I like things everyone doesnt have. And everyone has an Evo and now 3vo. The Photon is a bit different and I like that. Now, if the Photon was a complete dog and not worth it, then obvisously Id look at other options, but it seems to be pretty on par with all the top of the line android phones so Ill roll with it.

I didn't know about the Samsung GPS issues, that is good to know about. Anything else spec wise that gives the Photon or SG2 an edge?

The photon has a higher resolution screen than than the SG2. It's also possible that the CDMA version of the SG2 won't have GSM like the photon does. You can't really tell how the battery life would be until the device is released and that is checked out by users in real life and compared to the CDMA version of the SG2.

Hate to say it, but Evo owners are starting to seem a lot like iPhone owners. I know were all in the android family, but the Evo seems like a cult and if you mention another droid you get the evil eyes for not choosing the Evo. Just an observation.

Anyone have the slightest clue when the SG2 will even be released? I think Im still 100% riding with the Photon. I like what it offers and I just REALLY need an upgraded phone. My Hero is dying.

I'm leaving my evo, so I wouldn't say that at all...lol.

I definitely noticed that as well but it seemed to be more of an issue when it was the only 4G phone and then when the Epic came out it died a little bit and then it really seemed to die when the LTE networks came out.

It might have higher resolution, but the Super AMOLED Plus has more sub pixels and better color representation, deeper blacks, and in a side by side comparison will win against any other screen. It is currently the best of what is available on the market. At least that is what all the guru's are saying. Resolution is not the only thing that defines the clarity on a phone. Just like a 5mp shot from an older cannon DSLA camera will look way better than a 5mp shot from a cheap point and shoot. They have the same resolution, but the difference in picture quality is night and day.

Ya. But look at the Evo 3D forum. There were a billion posts before the phone was ever released. People fiending for it....aka iPhone users wiating in lines over night for it. But to each their own. Im not knocking what other people like. It has no barring on me.

In all honesty its not a huge difference comparing them. The colors are more vibrant on the AMOLED series but the clarity seems to be better on LCDs. But its not a big enough difference that someone should choose a phone one way or another. From what Ive seen the Atrixs screen does look as clear as my EVOs.

Agreed. For a second there I thought someone was trying to compare 55" LCP TV's! These are 4" screen phones for playing on and making calls. I dont need the "deepest blacks" hahahaha. :p

A few questions on this to people that have owned Samsung and Motorola phones. To this point I have only owned HTC (G1 and EVO), and LOVED them both. I am now running the synergy rom on my EVO and love HTC sense 3.0. I have heard pros and cons on Samsung's UI and only horrible things about blur, what are your thoughts on this? I know it won't be a huge deal because I will probably root and change rom's and such anyways (however that could be an issue with the Photon).

Also does the Photon have the laptop dock accessory like the Atrix? I have heard grumblings about this but never been able to confirm it. Thanks guys!

No confirmation of the laptop dock, yet, but the early reviews were saying that it eventually would have one specific to the Photon. The multimedia dock, however, was said to be available right at launch along with the car dock. Who knows if that ends up being true, but when the Atrix was launched, I believe Motorola lived up to their word and had the docks available at launch, which I hate to say HTC has NEVER done or made available right away.

The Samsung screen is not even close to being better than the Iphone 4 screen - are you kidding? For that matter I much prefer my naturally colored 35% more pixels than Samsung Super Amoled plus QHD screen on my EVO3d. Dont get mixed up my friend, the more subpixels on the plus screen just brings the Samsung screen up to a true 800*480 resolution. In other words the same resolution from a year ago or up to par with my old EVO4G. Its just that the Samsung resolution from the original Galaxy S was actually lower than the 800*480 it was stating, and I could easily tell from the lego-like text. I have seen the screen on the Droid Charge (same as Galaxy S2) and apart from the cartoonish colors that seem to have so many enarmored, its still last year resolution and I can clearly tell as the text looks no better to me than most normal 800*480 phones- again from a year ago.

That's just it, they dont have the same resoution. One has the resolution from a year ago and the other has the new generation (QHD) resolution. The QHD will look much clearer than Samsung. I for one read a lot and much prefer the higher resolution as text looks much crisper and more like reading ink. I don't care too much for super bright colors that often don't portray reality.

Just saw on BGR that ATT Galaxy SII is coming.

Exclusive images of AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S II revealed

Looks like the ATT version of it is a full keyboard slider!!! I do like slider phones a lot, and this one looks very thin. I wonder if Sprint will also go the slider route. That will really differentiate it from the Photon. I just wish it wasn't made by Samsung!

SGS II passed through FCC. Maybe there's a chance it'll release sooner than 30 days after the Photon launch?

Sprint's Galaxy S II Passes Through the FCC

I'm assuming Sprint will push the SGS II as much as they did the EVO 3D as far as advertising is concerned, so now that I think about it (and because there hasn't been much fanfare for the Photon 4G), it's possible we could see the SGS II, prior to the release date purchases for the Photon being past 30 days.

Won't make a difference for me, but I know it will for others, which is why I'm posting.

I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it again. I'm fed up with Samsung. I hate my Epic. I'm on my second one and neither has ever functioned as they should. I even got the botched Froyo OTA update that they pulled after it made it to almost 1/2 of the Epics out there and I was stuck with it for a couple of months until they released the "fixed" version. I'm not going to give Samsung a chance again.

That being said, I still think that on paper the Epic and this "Within" look like they should be great phones on paper. Most people who have the Epic, love it. Perhaps I was just unlucky to get two crappy phones. The Within looks like it's going to be a beast and if I had had a better experience with my Epic, I'd consider it.

I feel burned by Samsung and Sprint on the Epic.

I'm considering the Photon because on paper (or in write ups online) this phone sounds like it's going to be fantastic and Motorola has better support for their phones than Samsung. I don't get to upgrade until 9/1/2011 so I'll have plenty of time to play with the store display models and to read about other customers' experiences here and elsewhere before jumping in.

I do have a concern though about the Photon and it does have to do with the lack of advertizing and hype. I wonder if there will be a strong developer community for the Photon 4G if Sprint isn't going to bother to advertize it like they have been advertizing the Evo 3D. The Epic really was the Evo 4g's red headed step child when it came to advertizing if I remember correctly but at least I did see ads for it.

I haven't seen one ad on television or heard an ad over the radio for the Photon 4G. I had to find it online. This phone may not have enough users to get a developer community energized.

You're not in that boat alone. I can almost guarantee that the same can be said about every single "top tier" smartphone on the market.

I personally think Samsung makes great products on paper, but their support absolutely sucks compared to what I've seen with Motorola and HTC. That's just my observation. Others have been perfectly comfortable with Samsung and the Epic has been a good phone for one of my secondary lines, but I personally wouldn't choose a Samsung phone until their phone support gets to be just as good as HTC and Motorola.

I'm not necessarily concerned about the "initial" hype, but it's afterwards that I'm hoping they really do put in some money for decent marketing and advertising, so that increases the amount of people that get the Photon. Like you said, without the numbers of customers purchasing the Photon, it'd be hard to justify the developer community support.

When the Epic was initially released, it was being advertised like crazy. The thing is, the EVO was released 1 month prior and drew more purchases than Sprint even projected for, so the Epic was already at a disadvantage. On top of being announced as Sprint's "flagship" phone last year, that 1 month gave the EVO a huge head start on how Sprint was going to proceed with advertising. If the releases were flipped and the Epic was going to be considered the "flagship" phone, it's possible we would've seen a different story.

Yeah, I feel burned by Sprint when it comes to getting the issues Im having with the EVO taken care of. Im canceling my contract with them and dropping the EVO since Im on my 3rd EVO and all have been having the same issues with Sense crashing and the phone rebooting. I still want the Photon so Ill probably sign up again when it comes out but Im pretty pissed off at the EVO and probably wont own another HTC phone again. At this point Id get a Samsung before I got another HTC.

Well, Samsung never really resolved the issues with the GPS signal strength on the Epic's, so you couple that with the delay in OS updates...they come in 3rd IMO. Even though I don't use Samsung phones on a regular basis, the horror stories from Samsung phones are far worse than anything I've seen with HTC or Motorola.

Photon is in my sights right now...but I am intrigued by the Within. I love large devices, and according to the FCC specs, the Within may end up being a dual-core Infuse. At 4.5 Inches, that's very tempting to me.

Also...it would depend on the innards. I'd really LOVE to have the Within IF it has the Exynos Dual-Core cpu, Tho it seems more likely to have the standard Tegra 2.

I'll have 30 days to decide, as it looks like Within may hit Sprint mid to late August.
