Help Broken Evo Charging Port Thread, Lets Track This Issue

what is the warranty for the HTC EVO 4G? i got mine on launch week (Jun 8, 2010 to be exact) so i'm REALLY hoping it's not a 1 year warranty. my charging port hasn't worked for MONTHS but i cracked my screen the other day so if they'll replace my phone because of the charging port for free or even $35 then i'll get the cracked screen 'fixed' for free as well.

Bad news for ya, the hardware is a 1 year warranty, and the cracked screen will guarantee they won't replace it for you, regardless... Sprint considers the cracked screen to be customer neglect and voids their returns, refunds, and ownership of any other issues (just like the "water damage" issue, which by the way, you can remove those stickers, keep em safe somewhere, then put them back in if you ever need to go for a repair.. :) just a note, get your battery really hot (4G, even if there is no service, get on wifi, turn on GPS) and play an HD (streaming preferred) movie or an intensive game to get the system temp up, and the stickers will slide right off!).

Next thing, some possible good news for you... If you get a nice sales person (normally the tech is too busy to do the greeting) and can convince them to get the tech to look at your phone anyway, this is unfortunately assuming they have a reasonably good phone tech, they might offer to re solder the connections for you.

Now, in case you cannot get your phone repaired... your best bet is to go to Radio Shack and get a soldering iron (they have the perfect one, although it is a bit pricey for me, I have not tried amazon or ebay to find one), you MUST GET A 15W soldering iron, I say Radio Shack, because they have one with a switch 15W/30W, buy an extra small tip for it and some solder, also get a solder remover, not a cheap one! If you use anything over 15W you risk burning out the chips in your phone (too hot), also don't keep the soldering iron near the board for more than 6-8 seconds, pull it out and let the board cool down (20-30 seconds). you fry a chip and your phone won't turn back on!

1. get your phone opened up, there are some guides out there do a search, try youtube for a video
2. Check the port and the connection on the board,if it looks clean, hard to explain what I mean, but if there is a little solder on the connections and a little solder on the port, you might be able to reattach it without cleaning the old solder off (this is the best way to go, but might still give a weak link and need more solder.)
3. if you need to add solder do this first, melt some solder onto the tip and let it drip onto a piece of wood (anything bigger than a pencil should work! Then use tweezers to pick up the cooled solder (takes about 1.5 seconds), and use the tweezers and that small amount of solder to apply the extra bit onto the port (not the board), use an old credit card or a keychain club card (like a grocery discount card, you will need at least one, better if you have 2 of these) as a separator between what you want the solder to be on and any other connections, so you don't accidentally short anything! one more note those cards will MELT! (this is bad) so don't get them too close to the tip, but the are thin and sturdy and good for more than popping office/bedroom doors open... I mean getting discounts in stores... :)

Good luck, and if you do have to take your phone apart, practice soldering on something else first! like a $4 flashlight or an old harddrive that you've been using as conversation piece/paperweight/bookend... it is easier if you can do a couple test runs first. anything electronic that isn't working anymore, is cheap, or you have a few spares will work! It might even help you some if you take a spare USB cable apart (careful you can hurt yourself trying to get those connectors open!) and see how they work/practice on them.

Just wanted to give an update about my returned EVO from Best Buy fixing the usb port. Before I turned it in, my phone was rooted with the latest update using MikG 2.1+3.0 rom. So I picked it up today and checked the usb port and its working again of course and I realize that stock operating system is back on there, so I said to myself "I can't believe these people, can't they read my instructions on not to modified the OS and leave it the way it was". So I was shaking my head and soon as I got to my car..I looked up the software information and its froyo 2.2 3.70.651!!! Wheew..someone in the inside knew what he or she was doing. So I'm happy again!!

are you sure it was the same phone? i was told by a sprint tech that they can't roll back evos to froyo. it was not because of policy but they do not have the software to do it.

I don't think they rolled the phone back. I think they either repaired and reset his froyo phone without updating to the gb, per instructions, or they have him a froyo refurb, again without updating, again per instructions. Either way, good news.

Yeah its my phone. There are a few marks at the top and knew it was mine. Also I checked my phone identity through about phone and everything is their. Yeah they pretty much followed my instructions, so they somehow put froyo back on their.

well that is interesting. i wonder why they did that. damn your lucky. you should buy a lottery ticket. actually buy one for me as well.:D

Add me to the list of broken charging ports. I baby my phone and something with the design of the car charger caused the prongs inside the port to get bent out of shape and it will no longer take a charge. In order to get another EVO I have to send it in and they want $100 deductible. Im saying **** it and Im going to recycle my phone with them, terminate my contract and then try to open a new contract. Im done hopping around and going through this circus just to get a working phone.

Have a 0003 hardware version. micro USB does not make contact, so I can not charge the phone. Had the phone for 13 month. Currently using an external charger with the battery, it is not a cable issue definitely the phone issue. This is the first issue ever had, looking for a solution. Anyone had experience opening the phone and resoldering the micro USB? ( can not pay the few hundreds just for that)

mines broke finally and boy oh boy was i in for a treat.

Sprint store is worhtless in my area. Not only do they not carry accessories like they're supposed to but they have HORRIBLE customer service. So anyways the tech guy says my phone is beyond repair. He red flags it.

That simply means that i HAVE TO ASURION IT. INSURANCE IT . Pay monies.

I don't want to. So I call sprint. THey say "well , they guy shouldn't have red flagged it". So basically i have to pay to get it fixed.

I say heck with that. I remember I have the black tie insurance at Best Buy so I go there and they take the phone from me and tell me i will get my refurb on the 4. Kool beans i say.

The really wack part was how Sprint store and sprint themselves disallowed themselves of any responsibility. Sprint store simply handed me the phone back and said " CALL ASURION".

Sprint said "CALL HTC". No one wanted to be left holding the bag. Grrrrr... I was so freaking mad.

Anyways, i 'll let you guys know on the fourth if and when i get my refurb from BB.

Peace yall........................

Well , i got my refurb on thursday. It actually came in on the 3rd but i wasn't around to pick it up.

All in all my refurb ain['t to shabby. It looks almost brand new. Really hard to tell (missing the watermarks stickers inside case) any thing at all.

Very pleased at BB black tie protection. Only thing is that it came with 2.3.3 and so I'm crap stuck till they find a way to root.

I just can't win :(

Hate to tell you (and I think I already have mentioned this in this thread) the OS version does not determine if you can root, it is the HBOOT version. do some searching, learn some more. Start with unrevoked.com

How about you educate yourself and don't presume upon what i know or have done. k.

Lol , 2.3.3 doesn't neccessarily mean you can't root. What a joke.....

Add me to the list of broken EVO usb ports. I wish I had looked at all the posts before I bought 2 new batteries - I would have realized it was the port and not the battery. I ordered one battery from Amazon that would be waiting for me when I got home and then found a Batteries Plus store next to my hotel that sold a replacement and bought that too.

Was on a business trip when the evo just stopped charging - with the new battery, which of course had a partial charge, the evo started working ok and in certain positions would charge for awhile. I managed to get the thing into a position that allowed it to charge overnight then flew home and stopped at my local Sprint Repair facility.

The tech there seemed to know all about the problem and proceded to pry the thing open - when he got to the part where he separated the red from the black plastic chassis he wasn't being very careful and the usb port just popped right off the motherboard and onto the floor. I picked it up and handed it to him and he said "that's too bad, if it was hanging on by at least a thread, I could replace the phone for free under your TEP but instead I have to flag it as DBR" and "you have to contact Asurion and pay $100 deductible or see if HTC will cover it under warreanty"

I contacted HTC and will probably take the chance and send it to them (it is under warranty until Oct 2011) but after reading a bunch of the posts here and elsewhere, it looks like they may try to charge me as much as $240 to fix it - the fix sounds like replacing the motherboard.

Sprint Customer service said basically the same thing that the repair tech said but this was on a Sunday so I'll call again on a weekday and see if I can get it replaced by them. They did offer two $25 rebates on my bill if I wanted to just get a replacement from Asurion - might take them up on that if nothing else pans out.

Any thoughts or sugestions?

I can be added to the list. I got mine at launch and it finally happened yesterday. I was reading thru this thread and glad I did. I was under the impression since it was a hardware issue they would just fix or replace it since I have TEP/and Assurion insurance. Is that not the case?

Also for the record my phone is rooted with Myn4 and I also lost my 4G Key a while ago. Never got it bothered getting it replaced since the 4G is spotty here in Boston anyways but my phone charging is another issue.

Any advice on how to go about this from anyone that has brought their phone in recently?

all i did was put steeles stock rom and turned it in.

Rooted stock rom.

Of course , that was to bestbuy but i don't think sprint store is that discerning either.

IF you are really paranoid , just unroot and put stock ruu.

If you don't want to pay insurance for a refurb , then might i suggest BB black tie protection. Worked for me!

So sprint can't say "Its the users fault" because you know dam well its not. If you have a loose or broken port please post here and try to include your hardware version 2 or 3 and your build dates. Frankly im sick and tired of HTC and Sprint passing the buck about there faulty equipment.

It is not my fault. My boyfriend and i purchased our EVOs 1 year apart. In fact I was the one who suggested it. My 1st phone developed a port problem. I wasted money on car chargers etc because they never were able to be used. I thought it was user error, maybe I was pressing too hard. Replacement phone given: 1 week in, would not charge by port without using tape.

Boyfriend - Purchases EVO: 3 weeks in charging issue. Phone Replaced at Sprint Store. 2 Months in charging port issue. Replaced at Sprint Store. 1 week later charging port issue.

I am calling Sprint today. This is not acceptable.

Well I ended up just bringing the phone in rooted and just said the hell with it. They didnt bring up the fact it was rooted since it was a hardware issue, (although my 4G key was missing as well. Lost it on a bad radio flash). They ordered me another phone. Here's the kicker. I received the phone and the back cover was beat up. I asked to keep my old 1. Also noticed scratches on the glass. I guess u get what u paid for. I remember when they would at least send a device that looks new.. Weeks later my phone is showing this 1X often and I'm missing calls and texts are getting stuck, coming late, not at all or not sending..FML

Just when I thought I was back, (rooted). I'll give it a few weeks...

A thought. I'm on my second phone .... the problem with the port was the reason for the original switch some time back (6-8 months, have had the phone since it originally "dropped" on the scene) and my other main beef was the battery life or lack thereof .... I bought extended batteries (2) on Amazon for 6.90 apiece and both came with backs to accommodate the extended battery and the batteries fit my after market charger.

So this thread is still going on strong, and I thought I would be bumping a dead thread :p

Anyway, my usb port just got damaged last night. I'll admit it was my fault cause I did pull it up in the dark last night and I did not remember I had it on the charger, so I discovered this morning it is now loose and won't charge unless it's set a certain way.
Other than that I have kept PERFECT care of my phone, don't keep it in a case but it has absolutely no scratches or never dropped, and I got this on release day.
So given my usual caring habits, I don't pay for monthly insurance cause I don't feel it's worth it, so anyone have any idea what the cost may be to repair it? Don't really want a refurb cause I'd really rather keep MY phone and live with the limited charging position for the few months I have left on the contract til I get a better updated phone.

update to my post, guys at a sprint repair store say it will only be $35 for me to replace the phone with a refurb, even tho I dont even have insurance. Not what I wanted tho I rather keep my phone, even tho they were pressuring me to do it saying "Your phone is not charging at all, so we're giving you a choice: take your broken phone home or get a new one for $35".
I took my phone back. All my info was still on it and they just wanted to switch it with me for whatever reason besides making money. And my phone charged all night too despite their bs claims cause I knew it would charge at a specific angle.
