Rogers 911/Sense UI Update: Post your problems here

A Twitter user contacted me to day that his voice dialing (which admittedly was not great before) is completely gone/non-functional since the update. Can any one else confirm?
The voice dialer doesn't appear to be included in the update. (I previously used this app when driving.) Perhaps there were some compatibility problems with the Sense UI?

David, can you please confirm, previously when using the Magic or Dream there was a Voice Dialer icon. When pressing the icon Android woul dwait for you to speak the words "Call Bob". It would look through your contacts for Bob, and ask you to confirm by pressing the screen again. Then it would dial.

This voice dialer worked with Blue tooth (I use it with BT headset in my car daily).

Is this functionality gone?

Yup, it looks that way. I was previously using the August 28th 2009 Rogers customized Android 1.5. By default, the Voice Dialer was on the main screen. The functionality was as you described: "Call Bob at home". I also used it with bluetooth. I cannot find this application on Rogers updated Android 1.5 with HTC's Sense UI. Also, some ringtones were removed/updated.

Any bright person know how to "extract" these from the old ROM?

No, I tested that too! I cannot find the voice dialer anywhere!

David, if you are willing to try:

go into Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > scroll down to HTC Sense and click > clear the default.

Wen you press the Home key, it will ask you to choose Sense UI as your home, or the original Android 1.5 hom (you can reset it to Sense UI later).

Choose the original Android Home screen. Now try long-press on Call key.

Does anyone have any problems with Call Forwarding? I use to have it forward to Google Voice so I know it was working before.

When I get to the call forwarding settings page, it just pops up "Network or SIM card error."

Gonna call Rogers -- for the 5th time -- about this specifically but if anyone else can confirm/deny.

Got the same issue here .I have to select items numerous times in the call Call Forwarding menu. "Network or SIM card error." comes up a few times then I can get it to work.

Instead of "adjusting" the Sense UI, I installed TopVoiceControl (available for free in the Market). It provides the same functionaity as the previous Voice Dialer, but allows for various customizations - including text-to-speech confirmation.

I am currently using TopVoiceControl and I like it, but it is bad for customers that they now have to get a 3rd party dialer.

What I find frustrating is that many of the voice features (such as Google Search) are not available on Rogers customized version of Android 1.5. I was hoping that this would be improved for this release. (I've heard that these features are not included due to incomplete support for both official languages.) I hope that this is resolved in the Android 2.1 update that Rogers is promising.

For the record again, here is the current list of reported issues:

- VoiceDialer is GONE (you will need to DL a 3rd party app)
- Fido customers report their phones now constantly say they are roaming (data I believe)
- Some people report various FCs and spontaneous reboots
- One person says he was unable to delete icons from the home screen (including Rogers icons)... has anyone else encountered this?
- Photo gallery error (some users report only photos in the 100MEDIA folder show in gallery, unlike in previous version which only required photos to be in any sub-folder of the DCIM folder)
- Possible problem with MS Exchange (via Twitter)
- Twitter user XBrav is having problems with freezing, buzzing, and calls not completing.
- Flash player not always working
- Battery possibly draining faster for some users, may depend on use.
- Some apps previously available in the marketplace are now not available.
- Call forwarding issues

NOTE: The task manager "Kill All" issue has a fix. You must add htc sense and com.htc.provider to the ignore list.

NOTE: The weather widget app has a fix, set location manually and specify Celsius is supposed to fix issue of wrong weather reported.

QUESTION: Can people who have updated please report the difference in available RAM & ROM space on your Dreams and Magics now compared to previously? I have seen some reports that there is now a lot less space on the internal memory for installing apps.

QUESTION 2: Can anyone please confirm whether or not Microsoft Exchange is working properly?

Just a note about call forwarding, it never worked fully on mine since new. I can only do an Always Forward. I like to set Forward When Unreachable to cover me when I'm in a bad area but have a deskphone. This was very handy back in the days when Fido was Fido but never worked inside my house. They were the only company that did that automatically once it was setup. I'd rather take the call on another line then notice voice mail hours later when I'm in range. I pay for forwarding but can only do simple forwarding which I rarely need.

Hey everybody,

Here is something that might help a lot of people with their battery life.

Disable the option Wireless Controls -> Mobile Network Settings -> Enable Always-on Mobility.

Honestly, I am not sure what it does. It seems not many people really know. However, I know for sure, that it cut my battery consumption almost in hals without any problem that I noticed. I know it has been discussed at length before. Some peoples, I don't know why, don't want to chance switching any option off.

I was about to report terrible battery life, and I remembered having the same problem when I bought my Magic. I remembered this setting from when I ran HoFo's cooked rom. What a difference it made!

new problem popped up.

When listening to music via the htc music player (and the screen is off), you can press menu to get to the lock screen and the widget is above the lock screen as well (thus you can control the tracks, etc., without clicking out of the lock screen.

I've noticed it stops working after a while and isn't responsive to touch (even though tracks are still changing in the background)..

hope I didn't confuse anyone... heres a summary, the music player stops working on the lock screen after a while.

If you look around for battery saving tips for the HTC Hero (which from what I can tell, runs an almost identical rom in terms of features to the one we now have on our magics), this is the #1 tip on almost all of the results you will find. I turned mine off and the battery life is better and I've noticed no difference with connectivity.

I had about 196M of free ram just before the upgrade, with tons of stuff installed (yeah, all that useless junk too), after the patch I think I saw something around 150, before starting to install anything.

Other than that, a few spontaneous reboots, some weird behavior that I can't really explain, crashing here and there.

But to me the most annoying thing is the fact that the browser appear to be stuck in full screen mode, meaning that everytime I hear a notification, usually an email received, I can't just open it over the current screen, I need to close the browser to get to other stuff, I really hate that.

But since it look like like they really don't care much about the majority of their anglo customers, why would they do better for the minority, this is probably hopeless...

Was it correct before the update?

On the original 1.5 it was so bad I decided to set it to english from the start, since the best part is also bad on this one, guess what I'll do again...

In fact I just did as I was typing this, so now prediction is in english, and since I write 90% in french it gets in the way more than it help so turned it off as well, too bad because it's a great feature when you type on such a small keyboard.

Just a quick one before I go to bed (have to get up at 4h00, hope the alarm clock won't crash, will leave it plugged to make sure it's still on 5 hours from now...), but one last little question : wasn't the trackball glowing when an email was received, that was so nice... Another thing they taken away ?

Issues I have with the new ROM:

* shows me as roaming (when i called rogers to tell them, he said it is the first he has heard of it)
* the weather has preset canandian cities which cannot be deleted (delete is greyed out as is the add button, so i can't add any cities either)
* because it is roaming, i have to enable allow roaming data, for data to work
* this doesn't have the voice search.

I did the update on my Magic the day after it came out and I noticed that I am unable to change the screen brightness by way of a widget..
I used "Brightness Widget" from CurveFish, "Brightness Toggle Widget" from Rounded Labs, "Brighteriffic" from Alfray, and various others and I get the same results...
What happens is when I select the widget and change the brightness to say 20% from 50%, the screen will dim then go back to 50%.
This will happen weather I am in Sense UI or Stock Android UI.
The only way I can change the brightness is in "Settings/Sound&Display"
