Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

Well guys the evo still sucks after the GB update two months ago, and yesterday the phone started something new.
Now it goes into a reboot loop, it will shut off and half way through the reboot it shuts down again and will keep going it until I pull the battery. The power button on top will not shut it down and it will do it about six times a day. When I talk to Sprint on the phone thay say take it back to the repair center, and the repair center center says nothing is wrong with it. What is a person to do with this piect of crap besides throw it away and get something from version or someone else?

i had a similar issue when my phone would randomly reboot so i took it in. i was able to show the tech that it would reboot by running like 5 different apps at once. i ran both gps and sprint navigation, pandora, iheartradio, and angry birds all at once. and it rebooted and the tech gave me a refurb. do you think that you can try something like that to get it do reboot like that? get a tech to see it and they should give you a refurb. also maybe try a different repair center as well.

Thanks for the idea. The first time it got stuck in the stupid loop of rebooting I was trying to take a photo. I will try to find a command that will get it to do it. Or the tech can set it on his bench and wait for it to happen by itself when he it working on another phone.

exactly! don't let them tell you that your phone is ok, because it is not. either way demand that they fix your phone or give you another one. that is ridiculous that they told you that in the first place.

I had been using my BlackBerry again for the last 6 months or so, having put my Evo on the shelf when Froyo was still the OS. I upgraded my BlackBerry to OS 6 and wasn't really thrilled with it so I figured that since Gingerbread was out it was time to give the Evo another shot. I updated to Gingerbread and have been using it for almost a week.

Not much of a difference for me compared to Froyo, except my battery life is WORSE. It was never very good from the start, which is one of the reasons I went back to my BlackBerry to begin with, but now it's significantly (subjective) worse.

I'm using Juice Defender on the standard/default setting and I'm wondering if it does anything at all. If it really IS doing something, battery life without it would be legendary bad. I'm running with:

WiFi: off
Bluetooth: off
GSP on
Background Sync: on
Autosync: on (GMail, Weather, and Facebook)

You have these 3 on? auto sync, how often do they update? It's been said from the VERY beginning when the EVO was released that having those on and updating often will drain the battery...LOL.

I have GPS off now, but not background sync and auto sync. If I can't get my email as it arrives then wtf was I thinking even getting this phone?

I just talked to the people at HTC and I was told that my phone is still under warranty, so they will put the old version 2.1 software back in it at no charge.
They said to send the phone without the battery, back cover, SD card, and the sim card. I do not remember seeing a sim card in the phone or does the Sprint EVO put the sim information on the SD card also?
Thanks for all of your help on this great forum. :)

So after reading through most of this thread, it seems like some (not many) people have had no problems with the GB update? Are there any compelling reasons I should risk updating from 2.2 or am I better off just waiting for another update? Thanks.

I broke my own rule of waiting on the performance feedback of an update before doing it. Now 2 months later I am almost 100% happy with the performance of GB 2.3.3 except the voice to text issue.

However, my wife & father are still on 2.2 & I have a sneaking suspicion that's a little more stable than my rickety rickshaw.

gingerbread has been fine for me thus far and i downloaded it the very first day it was available.. the only problem i see from time to time is that the phone will randomly restart by itself but thats only happened like 4 or 5 times tops

Mine reloads Sense quite often. Mostly after I've updated apps from the market but a lot of times after leaving an app and it doesn't seem to be consistent on which apps. I've turned fast boot off and that hasn't helped at all.

This is the EVO I bought on launch day that has been great. Hopefully they push an update out to fix this problem as it's starting to get annoying.

Don't do, My wife is still on 2.2 with no complaints. I'm on 2.3 and constant crashes of the Sense ui, I've wiped the device and all the above, just kinda dealt with it. But would take back if I bought this out the box with these headaches, but I've had since day one.

I just wanted to say thanks to the people that are still visiting this thread and warning against updating to 2.3

I assumed the problems would have been cleared up by now but thanks to people updating this thread with the problems they are STILL having I'm going to hold off a while longer on "updating" mine and my girlfriends EVO's to gingerbread. At this rate it looks like I'll be up for an upgrade before these issues get resolved.

So, I did the upgrade right before a trip. Eesh.

Battery life is not as long and when I am checking my gmail accts it tries to open up my Google+ using my YouTube log-in.

Any suggestions on how to correct the Google+ feature. Isn't related to the app...that works fine.

Had the same problem. Go menu/settings/accounts and sync/
You will notice it added an item for the youtube side. Just remove the item (click it, then choose remove account)
See if that helps.

Do not upgrade. I repeat do not upgrade! If you have to, root it first and turn S off so that you can go back after you realize 2.3.3 on this device was a horrible update.

There are many people not having any issue with it whatsoever. The blanket statement you made is silly. Though rooting and allowing rollback is a good idea if you are willing to root I guess, but a very very small percentage of users who need help in this thread are looking for a solution that starts with "root it"... I'm just saying...

Is anyone having a problem with the weather widget. My current weather won't update on its own, I have to go into and update. I have to do it throughout the day, it says No weather data available.

Are you using sense widget? Assuming you are, have you checked your sync settings? Many native android items returned to default settings as the update may have added something to a given component. (example, my brother had to reset his keyboard preferences on the Atrix, as their update included new moto blur and keyboard improvements. When all was corrected, he realized some new beneficial functionality)

Not sure if that's any help to you, just a shot in the dark
