Official* iPad Thread

O
Honestly, this thing sucks. Apple is looking to get into the netbook market with this thing, and are failing. yes it is touch screen with multi touch, but these are its downfalls:

1. Apple
2. AT&T
3. 1GHz Processor
4. 64gb HDD
5. Virtual keyboard
6. No built in screen protector like thing
7. Awkward
8. Pricey...
9. No USB support (flash drives, etc.)

While a $299 netbook has:

1. USB
2. 1.66GHz processor (i3 coming soon tough)
3. 160gb HDD
4. Keyboard
5. Top to cover screen from scratches
6. USB 3.0 (summer)

etc etc.

Its a tablet. Its meant to be a niche device any tblet would be.
Thos device by apple is geared towards the liberal arts people.
Apple does not do things by accident. They seem to believe their is a market for tablets. I pretty sure there will be android tablets out there too in the very near future. Those will be highly customizable . Apple products are meant to just work and not to be fiddled with and customized with hello kitty wallpapers that the kids like . Android will always be for the geeks imho, the ones who love to play with their device often to customize wallpapers, themes. Nothing wrong with that , mind you. But that is the big difference between the os.

Would be fun to have but not for $500+...If it had multitasking, a camera, video conferencing, a browser with FLASH support, etc, then I would be more willing to drop the money. I want more of a PC in a slate design, not a supercharged phone in a slate design...There are plenty of other "tablet" pcs that are coming out soon (I saw them all over the place at CES...Intel's booth had some really nice ones). I'll go that route if I decide one is warrented...

I kinda liked it... I could see having it on the breakfast table or wherever, but then again, Gizmodo listed some eye-opening realities that made me think again:

8 Reasons to Not Like the Ipad...

Big, Ugly Bezel
Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.

No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?

Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.

No HDMI Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

The Name iPad
Get ready for Maxi pad jokes, and lots of 'em!

No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.

Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.

Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.

It's Not Widescreen
Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!

Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G
Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

A Closed App Ecosystem
The iPad only runs apps from the App Store. The same App Store that is notorious for banning apps for no real reason, such as Google Voice. Sure, netbooks might not have touchscreens, but you can install whatever software you'd like on them. Want to run a different browser on your iPad? Too bad!

Many Apple products have been overhyped; In fact, all Apple products are overhyped. This one's different though. The hype has been so huge because in the past, Apple has released products that truly were revolutionary devices.

This time?

Wow.... just wow, that's all I can say. I am speechless, and not in a good way. This thing is a joke, right? Most useless piece of junk I've ever seen. It's an oversized iPod. WTF were they thinking? No multi-tasking? It's supposed to compete with netbooks! You've seriously got to be kidding me. It's depressing that people will be paying 1000 bucks for this thing, if I know Apple.

WAY overhyped, and by the way, its $499, not $1000. Even the maxed out 64gig 3G is $829...... but then again I could get a HP TX2Z (Or almost a TM2) with 320gig HD, 4gb of ram, Windows 7, and multitouch.

Well, personally I've been holding back feminine napkin jokes all day.
I have been using them all day.

been waiting for ever to use this

Best. Post. Ever.
I defiantly will not be buying the iPad. Period.

Very disappointing. Just a giant Itouch - a product that does less than a notebook and the same as an Itouch - for a premium price.
Typical Apple attitude : let's put a lower entry price so people can say 'starting only at 499' but strip that model to bear bones and charge over $ 800 for a premium model.
Most disappointing features : no background applications, no camera, no native sd slot, no native usb connection, $30 per month for internet, and with all the hype I thought they really figured out how to revolutionize typing on tablets (which is still the main issue, if you wanna use it as a laptop.... one hand? two hands? then how do you hold it? type with thumbs? where do you lay the tablet to type? do you need a stand? etc.)
No thanks, ill stick to my N1 that does everything and more, plus phone calls.

On another note, if you are into tablets, check out a product that is really supposed to revolutionize the market, the Notion Ink Adam - running on Android, which will come out in 2-3 months at around $ 300. I think Slashgear has an excellent review of a prototype from CES. That's everything you would have expected the Itampoon to be, and more.

This has to be one of those products only made for apple fan boys. There's no point to it. It's suppose to be like be like a net book but is more like an over sized iPod Touch. It has no multitoich, can't view sites with flash which is the majority of sites, the key bored is ackward and apple says it's unlocked but uses a micro sim card that only works on AT&T! If you still have an itouch there is no reason for this. It's easier just to use the banes and noble app to read books. If you don't have an itouch a net book is a lot cheaper and you'll have more functionality. I can only see apple fan boys seeing this as a must have.

Oh and I forgot to add, no camera! Are you serious why would you not put a camera on this!

Honestly, this is what I wanted from them all along. The iPhone never blew my skirt up, but this is the direction I wanted to see. I've always wanted something I could use in the office that was flat, take notes in meetings by typing on the screen, no clicky keys to make noise and no screen blocking my view of everyone else. I like the portfolio cover that they have for it too. I think its perfect for leisure browsing where the phone is too small but laptop too much and I so hate having to boot up my laptop just to check something online or send an email.

All in all, this is what I was waiting for. I've heard so many people slamming it, but when this thing hits the shelves, there will be lines, shortages, backorders...I can see the writing on the wall already.

Me, I'm just going to order it from Apple's website and save myself the headache.

Yyyyyyaaaawwwwwwnnnnnnnn!! That's how I felt, feel and will continue to feel about Apple products in general. The tablet form factor has been a failure from day 1 and not even the marketing geniuses at Apple will change that. Although to compare this sad attempt to a tablet PC is like comparing a quadriplegic to a marathon runner.
