2.3 update from htc...need help in understanding

This is all a bit disappointing! I'd been having problems with low storage which I'd partly fixed but was looking forward to Gingerbread maybe being helpful in giving more space. I didn't fancy rooting as I'm only 6 months into my contract and I didn't want to screw the phone up.
Now I don't know what to think. The announcement from HTC makes it look as if it would be risky to update to GB, making it seem more appealing to try rooting. But I agree with SURoot's comment in another post that it would be too easy to rush in to rooting now without enough consideration of the potential pitfalls.
I think I will adopt a "wait and see" approach on this one and see what other people are doing. Disappointed though as I said.....

damn, i was stupid and impatient and tried to run the RUU and now my phone wont get out of recovery :(

sh*t!

I think you can run ruu with new alpharev hbbot it just wont overwrite the hboot. That's why they way you no longer need a goldcard as the super Cid is patched. However your Mtd tables are not standard so if its still showing the r2 hboot you will news to flash alpharev standard hboot to accommodate this rom. Hopefully that will work as of you want to get back you can just fastboot flash recovery and flash a rom of choice. If that doesnt work then just downgrade hboot with alpharev downgrader

Go the root way the Desire is a better phone for it.

Was that English lol
For the person it was addressed to it should be clear.

The question had come from someone who had used a custom hboot (bootloader) to modify the partitioning of their internal memory. Anyone who has done that should be familiar with all of the terms used.

Conversely, if you've not done any of that, then there was nothing there that you need to worry about. ;)

Just installed HTC's 2.3, all working fine so far! Just to add my experience....

I have an Orange branded phone, and am sick of the bloatware (game demos, Orange Maps etc). I have I came down this morning to have a go at rooting my phone and maybe installing a new ROM, which I've never done before, apart from on a sony ericsson. Pure coincidence that the HTC 2.3 came out today too. Following the instructions by SURoot (thanks!), I managed to root the phone. I then tried to remove the bloatware with Titanium, which I couldn't get to work at all. I really spent some time working out how to install a custom Rom, and couldn't get my head around it. I'm sure people will tell me it's simple, but I was confronted by tons of steps and kept getting lost.

Anyway, after mulling it over, and reading some responses on news sites saying that people had successfully installed HTC's 2.3, I couldn't resist. It took 10-15 ,minutes, and was a absolute doddle, run the exe, plug the phone in, wait a while and it's done. It DOES wipe the phone (but not the SD card) so save any data.

Impressions after 20 mins or so of fiddling:

1. Startup time reduced from 1 minute to about 15 seconds. Shut down time similarly reduced! Blisteringly fast!

2. Much more phone memory - I've just installed most of the the things I had on the phone before and still have about 65mb spare - I was always on about 20-30 mb free before.

3. Phone does generally seem a little more responsive. Might be my imagination - it's always seemed pretty quick to me.

4. NO ORANGE BRANDED CRAP! The 'now playing' button that Orange hijacked for their bloody music store is gone too - my biggest irritation.

5. Apart from that, can't see a massive difference between 2.2 and 2.3. Slight interface changes, not much else.

6. Oh - the recovery thingie that rooting gave me (by holding down the volume down button on startup) has gone completely. If I press the power button with the volume down button pressed, nothing happens - the phone just starts up normally when I release it. Maybe they've disabled the safe startup thing? No issue for me - never used it until this morning.

By the way - I have sent an SMS and received one back. I didn't have to input any network settings - it just worked.

Obviously people need to make their own decisions having read all the information available, but for me this has worked a treat - much easier than installing a custom ROM and has achieved everything I wanted. If I hit any problems I will report back.

Just to add to the above.... Wifi hotspot will still not work if you install HTC's 2.3 and are on the Orange network. This is due to more of Orange's fiddling with it to try to claw more money from you. It obviously downloads some settings to the phone when it registers on the network.

It's easily remedied though, with these instructions I have copied and pasted from another thread, posted by hugh_effo who took it from somewhere else:

Go to Menu/settings/Wireless&Networks/Mobile networks/Access Point Names

You should see the following three APNs;

Orange Internet
Consumer Broadband
Orange MMS

Select Consumer Broadband

CHANGE the APN from consumerbroadband to orangeinternet

CHANGE the Username from <Not> to Orange

CHANGE the password from <Not> to Multimedia

Make sure you use the capital first letters exactly as I've typed them there.

Authentication type should be set to CHAP.

Press your Menu button, tap "Save"

after this both wifi hotspot and usb tethering should work.

Hi all

I also have the latest update on my desire and I have the same positive points as easychord. More space. I was round 20mb and now I have 87 left. Don't know about the branded phone since i have an unbranded one.

One problem so far. I have widgelocker and the hardwarebuttons don't seem to work anymore. Did some research and only the volume buttons work for easy wake up. But, that also did't work for me, only the power button.
Contacted the dev and also got the confirmation that it only works with the volume button.

Don't know how, but I cannot wake my phone with any other button than the power...

greetings

edit!!: for a wake up, the volume buttons only work when the phone is charging.
Anybody else has that problem? And solution?

Installed no problems. Messaging works fine, web works fine, everything works fine. Seems quick and the removed apps aren't anything I can't get back. Mine is an O2 handset, debranded via last 2.2 RUU. Phone picked up the network settings automatically.

Does it still have Sense and if so is it more or less looking the same as before ? I'm tempted now more people have added positive views but i do not want to lose Sense as i like it...

Sense is still on there. Looks just like before. Few minor differences in menu layout, more detailed battery usage courtesy of 2.3 itself and some more bits and bobs buried. There's only one wallpaper in the rom (there standard HTC live wallpaper) but the others are in the update .zip and you can just extract them and copy them onto your phone like any other pic (easy I did it).

Sense is pretty much exactly the same. Not sure how to check the sense version to see if it's updated, but it seems identical to me, maybe running a fraction faster.

i too was impatiant and installed the update but now i cant get bk to root my hboot is 1.02.0001 any help
Yup, unfortunately this was always on the cards.

If unrevoked can't do it, you could try this beta from the alpharev & unrevoked teams. But note: this is beta release software, and since Desire hboot 1.02 is new, by definition nobody will have tested it with this hboot version. So everything would be at your own risk. Personally if I was going to try this I'd contact the devs first.

Or you can wait it out - they've cracked a lot of previously secure HTC devices recently, so I suspect this one will fall soon enough.

Note: this isn't a rooting tool in the way that unrevoked is. That roots your current ROM and installs a custom recovery. This S-Offs your phone (bypasses NAND security) and optionally installs a custom recovery. Recovery will let you flash a different ROM, but there's nothing here about rooting your current ROM that I can see. But this looks like the way we are going from now (and once someone releases a rooted version of this ROM the end result will be the same).

Thanks for the quick reply. I think il wait til the devs crack it but thanks again for your advice
