It seems we will get a choice when it comes to the next Epic

We all already know the rumors of the next Epic 2 which would NOT be the next Galaxy S II but instead a slightly beefed up design of the original. A post from BGR today, however, says that Sprint will still be keeping the Epic name for the Galaxy S II variant coming to that carrier.

Now instead of getting the Epic 2 and the Within, we will be getting the Samsung Epic 2 4G and the Samsung Epic Touch 4G. I wonder if they will actually change the name of the Epic 2 to show the indication of the QWERTY keyboard or if the heritage from the first device is suffice.

Yea this went completely over my head as well. But I am hoping that when the next Epic comes out it doesnt have a keyboard on it , all touch screen. I think i have slide my keyboard open like 3 times since I have had my Epic

he is saying that the next genereation epic will have to different variations (meaning there will be 2 phones out) one version the epic touch 4g will be like an epic but to my understanding NO keyboard, and the epic 2 4g will be the next epic with a 5 row qwerty keyboard

They should do the same thing with the Within for those who want a keyboard can have it and those who don't appreciate a good thing can choose to get one without.

I dont think you understood...

Instead of naming the Galaxy S II "Within" it will be " Epic Touch 4G" with the keyboard version being called the "Epic 2 4G"

I see. Will both versions essentially be the Galaxy S II then? I only ask because there were rumors of them making just a beefed up Epic.

Im hoping so, I was discouraged when the rumors of the Epic 2 were it only being slightly beefed up, but not on the same level as Galaxy S II. Reading the BGR article doesn't hint either way really, so anyone's guess at this point.

Screw the 4g crap. The next gen better be able to use LTE is Spint wants to survive. I also rarely use the keyboard, only when swype doesnt seem to cut it or my hands are too cold for the screen.

Until a viable LTE network is put in place, don't count on it.

Unless both variants are GS2 class, the Epic name should not be used for both. If that were the case I would expect both phones to be of same spec with the keyboard being the difference. Personally, I think that's what it should be. Why should the keyboard folk be saddled with a lesser phone?

After the total lack of service and upgrades for this phone , and the fact that they are going tonend of life a device barely a year old, I can't for the life of me think of any reason why ANYONE would buy another Samsung phone at all. I know I won't. With all of the manufacturers of phones on the market today, service is the one diferentiator that will determine where my dollar goes. Samsung failed miserably.

That's exactly it. I honestly didn't think what I wrote the first time was that confusing but hell, here's another try.

There are going to be two phones:

1)Samsung Epic 4G Touch (formally known as the Within)
2)Samsung Epic 4G 2

The Touch will be the actual Sprint variant of the Galaxy S II. The Epic 4G 2 will simply be a beefed up version of the current Epic 4G but still carry lesser specs than the touch but will still have a QWERTY keyboard.

It seems Sprint is attempting to create a brand (Epic) with these high-end Samsung phones.

Also one more bit of information that indicates the name is official is this logo that Engadget managed to dig up:

I know a lot of people are pissed that the Epic 4G 2 is basically getting the shaft but at least Sprint made it instead of completely ignoring the QWERTY crowd.

The sad part is the epic will now be the 2nd time sprint has skimped on a keyboarded variant. First the Evo Shift and now the Epic 2. The crowd that values the true productivity a full keyboard provides and will very likely be putting the phone through its paces gets the watered down version of it's slate variant.

Even worse, one can only pray AT&T's slider is not going to resemble the Epic 2. Would be the biggest bonehead mistake to make in ditching the dedicated # row. Plus they enlarged the redundant nav keys on the side. Who's in charge of these decisions. Just makes no sense to me how Motorola seems like the only company that can design a good 5-row keyboard and see the need for one. Even HTC can't get it right. Well maybe once with the Arrive in recent times.

If it is like A&T's it's just more of a let down. Extremely mild spec bump and a downgrade on the keyboard. What's the point?

Not to drag people off-topic, but the OP was perfectly understandable. You've heard of the grammar police? Well these are the simplicity police. They're not happy unless everyone writes in the vernacular of Homer Simpson.

Still, if the Epic 4G 2 is going to have janky specs, then I might have to research a more powerful querty phone. HTC or Motorola -- whichever looks like the best experience (ideally on Sprint).

The original Epic owners wanted the most powerful phone with the geekiest options, and that meant a keyboard and touchscreen. Motorola understands this with their various Droid iterations. Why don't Samsung and Sprint all of a sudden, and why are they shark-jumping now?

While I will personally be jumping ship from a QWERTY device (I really like the Epic 4G Touch aka the Galaxy S II), I do wish Sprint would have offered both a QWERTY and QWERTY free version with the same specs minus the keyboard.

It seems we will get a choice when it comes to the next Epic
