android 2.3 gingerbread

I think I might wait until Orange release it, have a play around, then consider rooting.

In principle it sounds easy, and well worth doing, but if anyone can screw it up, along with their phone, it'll be me; I'm still learning the terminology...

Rooting is almost impossible to screw up :) I've reflashed and re-rooted countless times because I like to try all the available ROM's and updates...it's really nothing to worry about.

What you should do is get your hands on your region's default image off XDA for 2.1 and then flash your phone with that image using Flashtool. Once you've done that...then you know you can return your phone to stock at any point. Once you've achieved that...play around and try things because you know you can get it working again by reflashing. :)

anyone else think the music player is a bit jittery?
i'm going to format my sd card and see if it improves any

It's a known issue.
It's discussed over at XDA a lot. People are experimenting with different software which can increase buffer size. Like for myself, I use Mixzing, but others are using PowerAmp.

I find when I start listening i get scratches for a song and a half and then goes away during continuous listening.

People complain the jittery music happens when you rotate the phone, unlock the screen, etc..

yeah i was using mort player on 2.2 but decided to stick with the standard stuff this time round as it actually runs very well.
just the music jittering issue that was bugging me, only seems to happen occasionaly, but can happen when doing nothing else with the phone.
reformatted my card now, not tried to see if has helped yet but if not i'll revert to using another player.

Got Gingerbread. And I don't like it much. :(

UI is horrible - hate having to side-scroll through my apps. Although now I can make them wobble a bit while I do so. Oh, what progress.

Had to buy in toggle (which is good) to replace status switch, which no longer fits nicely on the screen.

But biggest issue by far is the fat bar at the bottom of my screen with the tiny button for access to my apps. What a waste of space.
So now with my toggle status switch and my google bar, there's room for a whole 8 apps/widgets. Everything looks squashed. Can I get rid of the offending bar?
I can't find a way.

you could try a different launcher. i use adw ex and it allows me to scroll vertically through my apps. i also use tweetdeck and friendcaster pro for fb. im using wolfbreaks rooted 2.3 and ive deleted the fb app but it still shows up. i was going to use titanium backup to freeze or uninstall it but im not sure if anything else uses it.
