Help Skype video call on HTC incredible S

The only front facing camera functionality I got with 2.3.3 was the "mirror" app that appeared after the update.

I not 100% on how android handles hardware....

I presume that this mirror app make use of some drivers or new code included in 2.3.3 that allows the front facing camera to be used.

So I also presume that you would be able to develop an app that uses the front camera on 2.3.3

Skype and Google have fallen out (as above) Microsoft have bought skype out. So I wouldn't expect too much from Skype in the future.

Source: BBC News - Microsoft confirms takeover of Skype

I'll do some further reading. I remember reading that GTalk would be updated as part of 2.3.3 (2.3) and would include Video Calling. This wasn't the case. Some further reading today states it will come in 2.3.4 - The article was dated April this year so I don't really think this is the case. Perhaps with the Nexus, but not for us IS users.

Ok - Did some more reading, Original article stated IS was getting 2.3.4 as annouced at I/O 2011 - I don't recall hearing \ watching this anyway . I understand the Thunderbolt is getting 2.3.4 with the new GTalk on June 30th (roughly). I doubt the IS will be included in this roll out. I'm going to email HTC.

I know "Internet" Video calling will be free over WiFi. But doesn't this seem more of a step back. I was making video calls years ago with my old Nokia N series' . Fair enough it cost a fortune , I just fail to see why it's no longer supported :S

Responce from HTC:

Karin: Hi Dean, thank you for contacting HTC Support. How may I help you today?

Dean Farnaby: Good afternoon

Dean Farnaby: Earlier this year I was anticipating my Incredible S being upgraded to Android 2.3.3

Dean Farnaby: Once HTC started the roll out I recived the update no problems at all (eventually lol). One of the things I expected in the update was some functionality for the front facing camera. The news floating around the internet was that 2.3.3 would include a new version of Google Talk that included Video Calling. Unfortunatly all I recived in the update was a "mirror" app . Doing some further reading I have discovered that Android 2.3.4 will now be the version to include Video Calling and that this will be rolled out for the Thunderbolt (In the USA) on June 30th (ish).

Dean Farnaby: I was just wondering if you could clarify this situation for me? I was able to video call on my Nokia N95 years ago. Granted GSM video calling cost a fortune and video call over WiFI would be "free". I still fail to see why the device was shipped with the front facing camera without any way of using it. As far as my understanding takes me it is not a great challenge to create the necessary software

Karin: Unfortunately we have no information at the moment regarding Google talk as this is a Google rather than a HTC application. It should be made available once it is ready for that.

Dean Farnaby: So you have no idea on the 2.3.4 update?

Karin: Not at the moment, no.

Karin: We will of course announce it via the HTC website once there is a new update.

Just tested Fring this morning - was meaning to last night but I forgot..

Anyway - instantly upon signing up & in I recieved two friends requests from people I have never heard of (Make me abit sceptical)

Tried the "Fring Test Call" and it seemed to work well - quality was poop but I was not using WiFi - The app used the front facing camera and gave me option to switch to rear.

Apparently NimmBuzz is better - I read the description for the app and I saw no mention of video calling

Ahh. PC > Phone.

I wasn't aware this is what you are looking for.

In that case, as far as I know it's not avaliable.

Although, when we evetually get 2.3.4 (unless its just a rumour) Google Talk will be video enabled. As the PC version is currently video enabled I presume that Android > Desktop video calling won't be a problem

New release but still not for the incredible S....................sigh

Skype has rolled out a new version of its VoIP software for the Android platform that brings video calling to the table. Well, it does if you own one of only four Android handsets currently: HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro and the Google Nexus S. That’s not very many of the dozens of Android handsets on the market, but owners of other phones will have to wait for support in the future.

Over at xda forums somebody modified the original apk to work with other phones including the Incredible S. We can do video calling with Skype now. The apk file is in the link below.

Hey just signed up here, I'm not an Android user myself, but I am trying to set my girlfriend's phone up so I can video call her with my HP TouchPad.

Anybody can answer this if they know, just had this in for reference. I downloaded this to my girlfriend's IS, and when it came to the permissions, there seemed to be a lot of fishy things like:

Give the app permission to:

read/write contact data
modify/delete SD card contents
a bunch of other things (those 2 were the most important that I was concerned with)

I don't have much experience with Android as I'm a webOS user, but I am fairly knowledgeable in the smart phone field.

I just want to make sure these are normal things to see with this app before I go ahead with the install.

Appreciate the help/advice, and if you need more info, ask.
