Anyone else not planning on updating?

I'm currently on 2.3.4 with cm7, and even though I don't use tethering a whole lot, there are times when it does come in handy. (Like now, I've had no real internet for days.) I don't live in an area with 4G connectivity and my signal seems fine to me. Is there anything SERIOUSLY worth updating for, because if there's not, I think I'm just going to keep it on 2.3.4. Is anyone else planning on not updating?

I just got my update this morning. I was apprehensive about updating. But I don't get good reception at home, or for that matter at work. The places I frequent most...figures.

I did it. Yes it seems I am getting better reception. Nothing earth shattering, but better. I usually get one bar or none. Now I'm getting one while idle and up to two while downloading. Will wait and see what happens at work tomorrow. Worse there!!

As far as Hot Spot. Well it does turn on, and sends a strong signal. But no info. comes through.

As others have said. Time to learn to Root! I didn't want to...but a guys got to do what a guys got to do.

I don't want to update, I keep clicking "not now" when it pops up. Free tethering is way more important to me than any benefit the update may have. (I don't get 4G where I live either)

Its constantly in the notification bar telling me there's a system update available and pops up like every hour in the middle of the screen, pretty annoying. Even though I haven't updated I couldn't get hotspot/tether to work last time I tried. Supposedly its still working for some people so I'm going to try again.

If you want the update to improve reception, you can download Peter Alfonso's baseband update.

You don't need to be on 2.3.5 to use the updated baseband, which is what actually improves the reception.

Also, if you're using CW mod, he's released a fix for the hotspot issue.

Those on STOCK 2.3.5, or those thinking of doing an upgrade, just FYI: the ONLY thing this updated ROM does is disable WiFi hotspot. Again, the reception update is baseband-only, so while the update will improve reception, the only real OS change is disabling WiFi hotspot.

....Oh, also, just FYI:

Rather than using WiFi hotspot, you can actually just use USB tethering, providing your single PC with internet, then turn on Internet Connection Sharing and let friends connect through your PC.

Considering the WiFi radio in your PC is usually quite a bit stronger than the tiny one in your phone, this will probably provide a better signal, too.

There really is no advantage to WiFi hotspot when you can do this with USB tethering.

Are you saying that hotspot was eliminated with update, but USB tethering is still functioning?
Or that USB tethering will function IF we download Peter Alfonso's updates?

Who is Peter Alfonso?

I had my girlfriend holding out on doing the update on her NS4G. Towards the end of last week her phone would no longer get data connections. She couldn't send picture text, status updates, weather, anything like that. She finally gave in last night and updated now everything is working again. Did anyone else experienced this?

I had one night when I couldn't get hotspot/usb tether to work, but now it does again, seems to take longer to connect though. I actually think the persistence of the notification to do the update has slowed down a bit which is nice cause its really annoying. but I still have not updated and haven't had the issues that you mentioned.

The advantage of hotspot is sharing with multiple devices... but thankfully hotspot was back to working for me last night

Okay, sorry for the late replies guys.

Actually, with WiFi Internet Connection Sharing, you CAN allow multiple devices to connect via an ad-hoc network.

Its actually pretty simple and will effectively do the same thing (although with a better result as your PC will generally have a more powerful WiFi radio than your Nexus).

If you installed CW Mod, then you were also instructed to download ROM Manager from the Market.

ROM Manager gives you the option of downloading additional ROMs, some of which are offered by Peter Alfonso. Long story short, he creates ROMs that are basic installs, no-frills, no "custom" builds, simply root-access builds that are essentially stock but with root access and minimal default processes running (i.e. no Sprint services running in the background for no reason eating battery life).

And yes, you need to be rooted to install the baseband update, however there's now a tethering fix for 2.3.5 also offered by Peter Alfonso, so at this point I'd suggest installing his "Stock Rooted GRJ90 Deodexed" ROM (this is 2.3.5) and then installing the 2.3.5 Tethering fix.

Just to clarify: What I meant before was that
1) WiFi hotspot was disabled via the update (2.3.5 GRJ90), but I'm unsure if it was actually intentional or if it was a fluke because 2) The baseband was also updated and this actually could be related to the WiFi Hotpot issue and 3) Yes, USB Tethering is still fully functional in 2.3.5.

Keep in mind, if there's a baseband update this could actually affect your ability to connect to the cell/3G/4G networks because it means the carrier [may have] updated their network for the new baseband. This actually IMPROVES your connectivity and is usually in your best interest but it does mean that there's a possibility that backwards compatibility isn't supported so devices on the old baseband won't connect at all.

A can tell you guys this about the new baseband: I've been using the GRJ90 build by Peter Alfonso for about a month w/the fix I meantioned above and not only does it function just as well as before, in fact I'm getting a better overall reception and even on 1 bar I still get fairly decent 3G speeds which was NOT the case on the GRJ22.
