Verizon No Longer giving Upgrades for Fascinate problems

Went to Verizon yesterday (August 4, 2011) to take my mom's Fascinate (which has been a piece of crap from the beginning) to get it upgraded to the Charge, X2 or Inc 2. When I arrived to the store I told them her phone has problems: when she calls people can't hear here or she can't hear them, texts either go a day later than supposed to or go to a completely different person and the battery life blows. After talking to the people at VZW for a while they asked if I had gotten a software update on the phone I told them yes and that my mom took it in store to do it because it was not working for her. After me Hard Factory Reseting it and the people at the store doing it 2 or 3 times the phone eventually went to a black screen and kept force closing TW launcher, android processes, and some other stuff over and over. Verizon's only solution was to send me a replacement Fascinate. At that point I told them I knew they were giving upgrades to the Charge, X2 or Inc 2 and that I did not want to be sent another crappy Fascinate. They lady there said that they never were doing that and that she didn't even have that as an option on the computer. After arguing with her for 15 minutes she finally went to the back to get help from the Tech guy to fix the Fascinate and then talked to the Manager and he told her that offer has expired. So I left the store. After leaving the store and not believing the people there I called Customer Support and they transferred me to Tech Support and they also said all they could do was send me a replacement Fascinate and if the same thing happens they would send me a different phone.

So long story short they no longer are giving you the choice of upgrading to the Charge, X2 or Inc 2.

Also they overnighted the phone so I got it today and as soon as I turned it on and hooked it up for my mom it wanted to do a software update. Looking forward to this piece of junk messing up again :p

I'm not sure what your problems are or what they are from, but from my experience, as well as a great deal of pro's in the android community will tell you, the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones are considered to be the best bang for your buck when they were released, and are still viewed as a solid phone.

I have used all of the major competing phones in its class, and once rooted, and wiping out all the verizon bloatware, this phone blows other phones completely out of the water.

I just put MIUI on and am floored with it's functionality now.

What I am saying is this: Verizon's software is what sucks. Don't blame the hardware.

If you are stuck with the phone and there's still problems (or hell, even if there's none), follow one of the guides and root the phone.

It is literally a one click and your phone is rooted, and only a few more clicks to a custom rom (i suggest CM7 in your case, as it'll feel just about the same as stock) with android 2.3 and have your phone rocking virtually faster than the dual processors running stock software.

My wife already got one replacement Fassy, well we did the software upgrade and then it starting going into safe mode, all apps would dissappear and would have to do a battery pull to get it to come back on. I called today and got tech 2 and they offered me the Inc2 or X2, we took the X2 since I have the X and have not had any problems. So I am hopping this is over for us.

I have a Fascinate which was updated to Android 2.2.2 I500_ED04_ED05 on July 28, 2011. Since that update, I have not had the issues that CT53 described.
The only thing I have had happen is that the screen display will "break up" and I will have to pull the battery for 5 seconds and restart it. It has only happened twice or three times.
for neotrixy - when is 2.3 due to roll out? I have not seen anything on that yet.
I'm willing to give this phone a chance and since I have been a customer with Verizon since 1995 (going back to the old Bell Atlantic Mobile days), I am hoping that any future issues will be resolved with a minimum of hassle.

Not only are they not offering the swap out anymore, but they cancelled any and all orders for a swap when ED05 was released. I had a Droid Charge on order and they cancelled it when the update was released.

yeah i squeaked through, my Charge showed up the same day the ED05 pushed out OTA. I got home from work, let the fascinate update, played with it a little, and then put it in the box and started activating the Charge LOL

I have had my Fascinate since Feb 2011.
It is still box stock, and it updated to 2.2.2 a couple weeks ago while I was snoozing....

I have learned to keep trashy apps off of it, and it works just fine thank you. I have never had the problems that I see described on the forum a lot.

I have a few basic apps that I value, but if anything starts acting funny, the last app loaded gets the boot. It always goes back to working right again.

My only real concern is that after 2.2.2 showed up, I am now getting hammered with a lot of damn Google adverts... never used to see those damn things. Adblock is NOT keeping them off either. Google is bypassing Adblock.

most people you find on internet forums this specific are going to be into squeezing every bit of extra performance out of their hardware. you will find it hard to find anyone on stock firmware here. I don't blame them. If you ever got to try CM7 on your Fascinate you would be so mad at Verizon for pushing that turd that is a stock bloated phone on you. The hardware you have is capable of way way way more than you get out of it. Around here we like to use that. We are power users. That typically means we find the flaws in buggy bloatware and buggy drivers faster. The stock experience is rarely ever going to show bugs. ;)

You are so right, and I did not intend it to sound like doing so was wrong. I am a retired electronics/computer tech and have trouble shot so much "perfectly designed" stuff the engineers "who know more than me" and then made it work like "they wanted it to". Strange that, they never change their definitions, nor their schematics, but WE, the techs have to append huge amounts of "As Builts" to make it work after the fact.

Being retired, I just no longer have the energy to play with stuff like I used to.

I have wanted to root mine and make it work right. I hate all of the trash bloatware, so I guess I need an over the shoulder push. :D

It is my only phone, would hate to loose it....
Can't afford to replace it if it becomes a door stop.

My wife got a Fascinate in February and it was great. Then about three months ago it got a download update and was screwed up bad. It would freeze, put itself in airplane mode, or malfunction in a number of different ways. We took it to the local store and their tech (who spends her nights on boards like this) had her own mix of the operating system that she installed and it worked for a while. then came another forced update that screwed it up again. You can say NO to the updates but then they still install anyway. There have been about four more since then. We were in to the store one other time and she took it in back again and it was good for a while. It is kind of limping along now. We learned that (1) the updates are sent to Verizon from Samsung. Verizon doesn't make the updates, they come from the phone manufacturer. (2) I called Samsung and they denied that anyone is having any problems with these phones. Yet I see it all over this forum. Their solution is to send in the phone to Samsung. Verizon is kind of in a tough spot because the phone is in warranty. I can see that they shouldn't have to bite the bullet when the the manufacturer give a rotten product. I've had other phone problems over the years and Verizon has always bent over backwards when they can. Unfortunately these phones have been unavailable to Verizon since the first time we had a problem. None in the store and none in the Verizon warehouse. Yet Samsung denies there's a problem. We will NEVER buy a phone made by Samsung again.

I'm very new with the whole phone rooting... I have no clue how to do it or even what all the technical jargon talk means sometimes... is there a "rooting for dumbies" lol.. I just need a very simple way to root my phone so it can work better. I can't stand the glitches and text messages not sending.... help! Also will I lose everything on my phone when it is rooted? If so can I back it up any way?
