Help Problem with making/receving calls

Multiple restarts and battery pulls are no longer fixing this issue.

Voice search/text etc. has also stopped working. ...and as of the last restart Executive Assistant, and K-9 mail will not launch. AND NOW CANNOT MAKE OUTGOING CALLS FROM THE DIALER!!! This phone has turned out to be an epic fail. I made a huge mistake not waiting a week or two. Missing calls and losing business, thanks Sprint/MOTOROLA, way to go.... dropping the ball, that is.

Reactivating my old Pre tomorrow, Photon, case, holster, Car and Home docks all going back for a refund.

Damm, I really wanted this phone to work! Or, at the very least, make and receive phone calls! ;-(

From what they saying at the Sprint Photon 4G forums there is a fix(software update) coming in the middle of the month to address this issue and others. This was a reply from a Sprint Tech about the people unable to hear and that you need to restart phone to fix the problem(I haven't experienced this yet on my Photon)...

Update: Obviously a lot of you guys ain't reading the whole thread or even going to the Sprint Photon 4G forums...

Sprint Tech:

Hello!
We have identified this issue and an upcoming software update should get this issue resolved on a permanent basis. The estimate for this update is that it will be out towards the middle of this month.

In the mean time, it should be only be on a per call basis, meaning that hanging up and trying again should correct the problem. If not, turning it off then back on again may get it corrected.

The hiccup is that it does not seem to effect every Photon. I can definitely agree that it's not at all convenient, but we are getting this fixed as soon as possible for those affected. I wish I had better news for you on this, but if I hear more, I'd be happy to share whatever I can that crosses my desk.

Motorola support called me as I had asked to have the issue escalated. They did confirm they are aware of the issue with the Photon and are working on a fix. They did not give an ETA on the fix though. I was pleasantly surprised by the phone call though.....

No I have read the thread, but having a phone that does not reliably make phone calls is a dealbreaker for me. I can live with other bugs that might get fixed in the future (for instance I have a problem with the Amazon Cloud MP3 player) but even in the age of smartphones the most important feature of the phone for me is the ability to actually be able to make and receive phone calls. You've noted that you don't have the problem so maybe you don't know how frustrating it is to miss an important phone call that you try to answer and have no audio. Then you have to wait and reboot your phone and then explain to the person when you call them back that there's a problem with you new phone and it does not work reliably. If the issue get fixed really soon then I'll be happy with the phone. But if not I'm going to return it and then once people confirm it's fixed maybe I'll try buying it again. Or maybe I'll get a different model if Sprint has the SG2 by then. The point is that this is a problem that if not fixed really soon will make me return the phone. And I would not recommend that anyone buy this phone until there is some confirmation that this problem has been solved. You can say that a fix is coming soon, but for anyone who experiences this problem it basically ruins the experience with what otherwise seems like a really nice phone. Promising that the issue will be fixed does not solve my problem now, whereas returning the phone and going back to my Palm Pre does solve it.

I can't speak of some of those apps, but I have had this issue with several other apps- Messaging and Dialer for example. Right now it won't even send an SMS that I'm attempting to send.

It's 2011. A mobile phone should not be this much of a ****ing piece. Unacceptable isn't a strong enough word.

That's how it started with mine. Got worse and worse, dropping wifi and 3G and locking up. Now, the phone froze when trying to take a picture yesterday, and will not boot past the red Moto logo.

Had to reactivate my Pre, at least it starts up.

I agreed to try a new Photon and a free month of service.

I experienced this for the first time yesterday. I just powered on and off and it was fine.

Called Sprint today after randomly not being able to make or receive a call without a reboot finally pissed me off. They acknowledged the problem is real and known as well as several other issues that I am thankfully not experiencing. Also acknowledged that there is no fix right now.

Did they say a fix was on the way? Mine has been doing this since the day I picked it up. I got it on 8/3. If they don't fix this soon, I am going to take it back. I really don't want to do that. I think in this case, for those who take it back because its not working right, they should not charge a restocking fee. I hope I don't have to find out.

Well, the reason i bought this phone was because i was having issues with my old Nexus S 4G and it took months for the software update "fix" to be pushed out. And of course the software update didn't do anything to actually fix the problem although it did manage to shut off free hotspot and tethering secretly (sneaky, rat-bastards). So basically they tricked every NS4G user into taking the software update with a long list of all the wonderful "enhancements" it would offer just to dupe us into losing one of the greatest features of the "pure Android experience". So i don't expect a fix for the Mopho anytime this summer and highly doubt they will be able to correct it anyway. Please Sprint, PLEASE put out the Galaxy S II before my 30 days are up!

Are there settings for the phone regarding the proximity sensors? On my Evo 4g, the screen would go dark when near your face, then pop back up if you pulled the phone away, which made sense and was handy if you had to enter a number or look something up on the phone. This Photon (which I love, btw) keeps the screen on regardless of proximity, shuts off in the standard screen turn off time, and when ending a call, I actually have to push the power button to wake the phone, unlock it, THEN end the call. Cumbersome.

If there are no settings to fix this, are there alternate dialer apps that can be used?

I actually noticed this the first time I made a call, but ever since that one time, my proximity sensor seems to work fine, just like it did with the EVO. I wish I could tell you what setting I might've changed, but I just wanted to make it known that the proximity sensor does work.

My proximity sensor works just fine... better take it in for a diagnostics check.

I'm pretty sure it's a bug with the "in pocket detection" setting.

You might be right. I have that activated. I think when I first used my phone, I had taken it out of my pocket to make a call, so that's why I had experienced that. Ever since that time, everytime I've made a call or taken a call, my phone was already out of my pocket.

I have been having this issue since day one. Originally, I thought it had something to do with google voice but it did not go away after uninstalling. It is starting to occur more often now.

I just checked my setting and it was not checked. This is not the cause.

Hey JSchu22

you talked about 3g/4g here in Tampa

my numbers are horrible too..My 4G here at kennedy and westshore inside the building is really lame, it connects a few times, but most of the time its non existant, when connected I hit about 800kbps...at 3G I can't get 150kbps...it's really a shame, I like the phone...

few other things I have experienced over the last two days..

One received call was silent...I had about 4 calls
One random reboot...
The pixelation doesn't bother me and its not really visibile, only when watching youtube, I can notice the dots...its pretty obvious

I loved sprint on my TP2 back then, but I can't justify the 80 bucks a month for this. I like the phone and could live with it, but the signal issues are just too great..

Will keep it within the 30day period and switch to tmobile (value plan)
