Has anyone had the need to dial 911?

Hey all - Just saw the below - the guy sounds extremly rational (no like some posters). Here's my question - what's the best way to test it in a non-emergency situation? "Hi, I just wanted to check that my phone would dial 911?"

Yes, I dialed 911 when someone behind me in a restaurant had a heart attack at the table. The 911 service worked just fine for me.

Just so ya know, they don't take kindly to calling and saying "Just testing". Worst case, I would say that IF you felt the need to have to test, you call it, and pretend "Oh crap, sorry! It's a new phone, and I messed up." (which is what happened the last time I ended up dialing 911 on accident a while back). And, for the record, if you DO accidentally call 911, make sure you complete the call and let them know it was a mistake. Don't just hang up after they answer.

Yeah - I know - that wasn't my plan - was being somewhat sarcastic. The worst case was - the local PD showed up at the door - you called 911??? UM no - I didn't.

I've called 911 twice and it worked fine both times.

By the way, you can call 911 and tell theym you are testing your phone, BUT make sure it is non peak hours. Try like Early Morning on a Sunday 9am-11am. Don't do it at 9pm on a Friday night! LOL

Had to do it 2 times. Works great. Put my phone on emergency status and turned internet off for something like 5 min. They ended up calling back for one of the situations and their call came through fine.

Not entirely true. Each state has different laws about 911 use.

The 100% legal way to test your E911 service is to call the non-emergency number and ask them if you can test to ensure your phone is set up properly. they will usually set up a time when you can call and test.

Just to reiterate. It is illegal in some jurisdictions to call 911 just to test your phone.

I have called ones from my TB and it worked fine.

I'm in Michigan and I know from doing business switch overs I can call 911 and tell them who I am and that I am testing a new line.

would you mind listing the times that random accidents/ tragedies occur so i can stay in my bubble wrap sute strapped to my bed.
sorry, just thought the "non peak" hours was funny, because you really never can tell when/where an accident or tragedy or heart attack will happen.

you can always call and tell them...you coudlnt see so good because your glasses came off and you went flying down the stairs and your shoes came off too! (lets see who knows this!)

I am a police dispatcher/911 operator, and THIS is the correct answer. But let me add one more thing. Your local police department may not answer their own 911 calls, sometimes they are answered by the county or some other agency. Call your local number, explain to them what you want to do and ask them if they are the answering point for 911 calls because you want to make sure they aren't busy.

Im a 911 dispatcher and when I read this I tried calling from my phone while I was at work a few times and it worked just fine.

I had to call 911 when my 3-year-old son split his head open. Luckily, it DID work.

And even luckier, the wound looked a lot worse than it actually was.
