I woke up this morning with a new symbol on the top bar. It looks like a rectangle with squiggly vertical lines by it....actually if anyone can help with a description of all symbols i would appreciate it! I have the Moto Droid 3 incase that makes a difference.

hmm... I'm not sure about the rectangle. However the 3 squiggly lines that look like bacon could be the icon to indicate your on Vibrate. Is it on the right side?

I just did some tinkering and somehow my phone changed itself to silent mode except for media and appz...this phone has done several strange things on its own...i do appreciate the help though!

Are you sure you didn't slide the phone to silent from the lock screen? Or hold down the volume down key by accident.
There are occasional "software anomalies" in the world, but there are far more "user errors".

Both are definate possiblities...o well, learned a few new things out of the thousands left to learn about this phone. I apprecaite the help once again! Still trying to figure out how to prolong battery duration but from what ive seen everyone else is as well.

Somewhat on topic: I installed an app called Ring Guard that keeps you from accidently turning the volume down. I recommend it.

The owners manual that came in the same box as the phone has a page showing and describing all of the symbols you may see at the top of your phone.

About trying to prolong battery life, try using the free app "Juice Defender". Some have had very good results with it. For me, it helped a little. Then again, I haven't used its more aggressive options to save battery life; I'm using the default.
