Hi,

I have the the Milestone since a week now and it has happened 3 times or so that the USB service stopped working. It would not allow me to select any of the three options for connecting and it would not charge.

Did anybody else have this problem?
Does someone know how to restart the usb.motorola.com service?

Cheers,
Deputy

Had my milestone since just before Christmas and been happily charging on a variety of PC's (win 7/XP) and UK pin USB power plugs.

However I've now started to experience the problems as described above:- Phone not responding to USB connection for either data or power.

would be very interested if OP or anyone else has any advice or suggestions.

My milestone arrived on friday, and i am having the same problem where the phone wont charge or recognise its being plugged in by USB. Whether i connect it to the mains plug socket or PC it makes no difference. Its not a question of drivers. Do you you have taskkiller, close everything or a similar application? Because i believe thats whats causing the problem for me.

lol..isnt there an exact same thread two links below this?

anyways...the same thing happened to me but it had to do with the task killers. I was using Estrong and when i killed the processes , it also killed one called 'usb' . to solve your problem (if its the same as mine), simply find 'usb' and put it on your ignore list. or just use Advanced task killer i dont think this problem occurs with atk.

I have never had a task killer on my phone, so that is not what caused it on my phone. Since I reported the problem on this site I have not had it again.

The only difference is that I did not connect it to my PC anymore, so I assume connecting it to the pc does something to the USB service on the Milestone.

My PC has Windows 7 Ultimate. Do you connect yours to your pc? And does it have Windows 7 as well?

Seems a common problem with the Milestone. Unlike most plug and plays, it won't. I've found that it's all to do with ejecting it from the PC. It won't then recognise it next time in the same simple way you'd expect it to recognise an mp3 player, camera etc. I thought the cable had failed and the phone was dodgy.

Best thing to do: either a battery pull or switch off/on. It should then recognise it.

USB Mount app is an alternative, but it doesn't show you whether it's mounted or not, so only semi-helpful.

It's something that Motorola should sort as it's a right PITA!

You can recreate the problem if you have a task killer (of any kind) on your phone. Just kill the usb process (if it'll let you). Now, try plugging the phone. It won't work.

I've never had the problem myself, at least, not like that.

However, using it with my MacBook Air running updated Snow Leopard I have seen another issue twice: I have tried to eject the phone, but it won't do it. It hangs Finder, in fact, at the "Force Eject" pop-up. The only solution is to reboot the PC. Since Force Eject is a modal popup, it stays on top, so even other things (browsing, photoshop, etc.) become annoying. On the phone, the USB icon in the task bar doesn't go away, and the phone can neither be charged nor can the SDCard be used. Only recource that I've found is to reboot, though it does seem that the problem will take care of itself after a long time (one of the two times, I just waited, and about an hour later, I was good to go).

I'm guessing it is an argument between Snow Leopard, the over-powered USB port on the Air.

I am convinced these issues are related.

Please stop referring to a task manager and the USB service. I don't use a task manager (as reported before) and as a software developer I understand how services work and am able to verify it was running at the moment I was having the problem.

It seems clear now that connecting it to a computer and accessing the SD card can cause the problem. Let's hope Motorola solve this and thanks for all the feedback so far.

Interesting. Without task manager software (AKA task killer software), how were you able to verify that the USB service was running?

Also, I've never seen this problem on a PC, connecting it to Windows 7 32-bit, Vista 32 and 64 bit and XP 32-bit systems. Plus, the symptoms of my Mac problem don't seem much like your problem - as the connection works perfectly until the eject fails (for unknown reasons, but it has only happened twice), crashing the unkillable finder process, then the phone's USB service seems to hang. The user interface process still works - in that I can drag down the notification bar and change the mode None to Mount and back again - but the actual connection never works and the phone doesn't seem to charge. Anyway, unless I start seeing it more often, I'm not going to light a fire about it. FWIW, I think that you are making a pretty big jump connecting what I see, rarely, with a specific configuration and only after a specific event, to the more general problem that you seem to see.

Just got this from Motorola:

"Thank you for contacting Motorola.

There is going to be an update for the phone in the immediate future. Since the details are still being fine-tuned, the exact date is not available.

As to the SD card and the phone, if you connect the phone to the PC, only the SD card will be visible, the phone memory is not available over USB connection. You should be able to use the Phone Portal (over USB or Wifi) to manage some of the phone options though. "

@big_adventure
you are too smart for your own good ;-)

I have a task manager (part of home++) and used that to validate if the USB service was still running ;-)

I'm just used to working with people who try to gloss over important details. ;)

Hopefully you figure out what is up. In my long (less than 40 hours) experience at 2.0.1, I have not had that problem, and USB response seems a bit faster and smoother.* Or, I could be imagining things.

* small sample-size warning applies...

same here, so always have a hard time when I am seen as such, but that is also my first reaction ;-)

I have 2.0.1 as well. Will play with it to see if the problem stays and report it here.

/off topic: I was hoping that the bluetooth trouble would be solved by this update, but that has only changed. (carkit used to just show dropped connection a couple of seconds after connecting, now it shows searching; restarting bluetooth solves the problem)

Just to see what would happen, I tried torture-testing my phone here at work with three computers.

I connected it set for mount, waited for it to mount, then unplugged it from one, then waited for the SD to remount and then plugged it to the second, then unplugged as soon as the disc mounted again, and plugged to the third. It happily mounted on the third. This was XP 32-bit, Vista 32-bit (with moto drivers) and finally, with Win7 64-bit. No problems so far. All three are HP laptops (I tend not to give the old ones back when they offer a new one).

Next up (and this failing would REALLY get me, 'casue I don't want to reformat my 75% full 16gb SD card): starting a multi-directory / file copy and unplugging rudely in the middle of it...

...and it works, no problem. I can even open the files that made it with QuickOffice. Plugging it back in and it remounts instantly.

I've now tried that on all three different machines. No problems so far AT ALL.

anyone else notice how useless motorola's customer service is?
ive emailed them like 5-6 times the past two months and i have not been satisified on any of those times.

I just ditched my Nexus One today after having problems with it for 4 days (must have spent 5 hrs each day on it). My main reason for getting rid of the Nexus One is the poor customer service from Google (they don't have one, not even a number/email/forum) and HTC (ignorant and claims only google knows what the problems are). I gather that Motorola does have some form of customer support. At least they are taking some responsibility. With Nexus One, Google doesn't answer, HTC blames google, HTC staff is poorly trained to answer any questions.

Checkout the Milestone site. They have drivers and software.
Software and Drivers - Motorola United Kingdom
First off, this worked, thanks. I was in driver-reinstall hell for half a day.

On one of my XP machines, after simply installing the Android 2.0 SDK and pointing to the "android_winusb.inf" directly, the Milestone synched up right away and I was able to use adb shell commands.

On two other XP's, I tried this exact same procedure and driver, but it kept rejecting the android_winusb.inf as if it didn't exist. The Moto link above finally got things going.

So I guess if you just bounce back and forth between the Android SDK driver solution and the Milestone drivers, and then some fairy dust falls from the ventilation system onto your keyboard, your device might be detected and you don't ask why.
