Google Nexus One Android phone in Canada?

Hi,
I am a customer with rogers and my contract is about to expire on November. I was thinking of getting a new Android phone, Nexus looks awesome...... but we cant get that in here and doesn't look like roger is going to get it.

Do you think if I buy it from ebay it would still work? Will I be missing any kind of special stuff that works only on US but not here?

I was thinking of getting X10, has almost the same features. And I am using Xperia (which is an awesome phone), so I thought I will just move to X10 if I can't get Nexus. Roger is going to get X10 somewhere in july.

So is it worth trying to get Nexus or X10 is enough?

Getting the nexus means you will have no 3g support on rogers. Its up to you if you want to get the x10. You could also get the Milestone when it comes out for telus and use that. There are plenty of choices just chose one with the features you need or want

Well with rogers I am getting the HSDPA ( the H icon in the phone) connection. ANd about milestone I am not sure, it has only 568Mhz processor. Whereas Nexus and X10 has 1GHz!!!!

I actually didn't know that telus is getting Milestone. If their plans are great then I would definitely switch over.

The milestone's processor is not that much slower then the Nexus one. In some categories the Milestone beat the Nexus One. Ala Graphics performance. Speed isn't everything the architecture comes first. You will not receive HSDPA on the nexus one it is impossible as rogers does not support 900/1700 bands that is AWS and only WIND in canada has any towers that support it.

But right now I have Xperia and I am getting HSPA connection every time I am trying to access the internet, I don't remember where but I heard roger supports all the frequencies now.

But as you are saying Milestone is as good as Nexus I guess I will get a milestone then (the phone looks awesome, and I am into keyboards too.). Thanks

Hey, i'm from canada and just got nexus one a few days ago. As soon as I got it, I charged the battery and went over to my local Wind Dealer... It was pretty pathetic what they had set up, a little movable cart with phones on display and a laptop to set up new clients but within minutes I was set up on wind and made a call :p The price is right($25 a month for 100 provincial minutes, which saves me on long distance, unlimited text, call display, call transfer, voice mail well all the extras in that category)

I'm loving the phone, didn't bother with a data plan since im ussually just on campus that has fast wireless and theres free wifi almost everywhere now a days :p

Anyways, I got mine off ebay for $600, took about 3 days to arrive and didn't even have to pay taxes! Definently a good investment and I love the fact I didn't have to give a penny to those greedy bastards at apple...

The Nexus One is so far one of the most powerful phones ever (next to Nokia N900 and X10). Wind doesn't subsidize its phones, so a Nexus One from Wind should be unlocked, but you'll have to pay A LOT for the phone. Wind plans are so good though. $35 unlimited talk with free caller id, 50 texts, and some extra features. $45 unlimited talk, unlimited text, voicemail and some features too. I know I sound like an advertiser, but these plans are so good. :'((( Still have 2.5 years with Rogers gonna become 3 if I choose to get a free Magic, so I'll be stuck with paying 60 a month before access fees. oh and Wind has no access fees :) unlimited internet add-on 35/month :D Already decided

xperia looks like a great phone but your would think they would release it with 2.0 .... not sure i would want to buy a outdated locked to rogers rom phone again after my dream/magic experience.....xperia has their custom apps on their and just wonder how long they will make customers wait for 2.0-.2.1

with the nexus one and Motorola working on a Google phone, maby their will be a trend of carriers staying out of customizing these roms and instead having apps placed on these phones so the manufactures can update these phones to the latest software and not have to create custom roms to their specific needs.

anyhow i will be happy to buy a nexus one as long as it is not loaded up with any carrier based software.

once those AT&T phones hit the market i will be getting one....

Hi There. FYI. The UX platform used for the XPERIA X10 will evolve to Android 2.x over time.

Hope that helps,
Mary
@RogersMary

Thanks for that tidbit mary,u would think for a phone thats not even out yet they would come with 2.0 and not be outdated before they are even released.I understand to certain degree with the Dream and the Magic but not a new phone just coming onto the market.I would hope all phones would evolve to 2.0 and past that but they really should be released with the latest software. These are just my personal feelings but never the less it looks like a great phone and sure it will be popular and look forward to covering it's release and reviews in my blog/site.

You can read my exchange with LG here http://androidforums.com/rogers/33210-sony-x10-canadian-exclusive.html#post236720

While they say the X10 is capable of "evolving" to 2.x, they don't specify if it will happen for these phones on _Rogers_. It would be nice to have confirmation that it will happen for _Rogers_ X10s.

Also, you will notice they say

According to an article I read on the net (which must be true, because it's on the internet ;)) Nexus One will ONLY get 3G on the Wind network. On the Rogers network, it'll fall back to 2G, but with Telus and Bell it has no fallback as their 2G is CDMA based (or something to that effect).
Someone had posted a comment confirming no internet on Telus.
Did that article mention that one of the next dozen Nexus phones will work on our network and another one will work on the others? That's why it has the moniker "One". There will be a Two, Three, ....
You can't shove every radio for every system into every phone.

Just a sugestion to the admins now that it's been made official that you can get the N1 in canada shouldn't this thread be closed and another created?

Why? If you don't want to read it, you don't have to. ;-)

Technically it's still a valid topic anyway. The title is "Google Nexus One Android phone in Canada?" which is phrased such that it could refer to a question about any news about the N1 in Canada, not just whether or not it's coming to Canada.
