There are abuses in every system. Unfortunately, conservatives in this country ignore the blatant ones - huge tax cuts for the rich, corporate tax loopholes, massive corporate fraud, etc. - while vilifying the victims of them.

Here is a little story for all of you guys bashing a system that is designed to help people in need. My wife and her family emigrated to the US after they escaped vietnam after it fell to the communists. They came to the US with quite literally the shirts on their backs and nothing more. They were sponsored by a church which helped them with housing and got them signed up for food stamps. My father in law busted his ass to get a job and within two months had saved enough money that he actually tried to repay the state for the food stamps (he didn't know how the system worked). The made him keep them a little longer until he was fully stable. Since then he put himself through college going to school at night and is now an electrical engineer. all three of his daughters who benefited from welfare, food stamps and the generosity of others, today have at a minimum masters degrees (one has a doctorate) and all are married to men with the same types of educational credentials (oddly, none of us husbands are asian), and all have upper middle class incomes.

My point is that the system is not just set up to give folks a free ride and a lot of people who benefit from it do so because they need to and not to make a life out of it. a great many folks who benefit from the system, go on to become highly contributing members of society. In most cases they would not have been able to, or would have had a much harder time doing it, had the not had that helping hand to get them started.

Current assistance programs here require actively looking for work with a case worker managing your case and if you dont find work on your own they will give you intern type work where you dont get paid and you are required to take the position regardless if you like it or not

I think you are correct, Batgeek. I also observe it and have done so for many years. I know some people at Smith's (a local grocery chain) and they also report welfare is on the rise. They do not need to observe it, they look at the computers and hard data. We called them facts, back in the day.

I see mostly minorities but increasing numbers of white folk, too. I know their status because I see people swiping their Horizon cards. I listen to some of these people talk and why they are not employed is quite clear. I also know that a big issue with welfare is it is sometimes generational.

And to be fair, I see an increasing number of white people on the public dole, too.

But, as some have pointed out, observation is not proof. So perhaps people that disagree with your observations can prove you wrong with facts.

Some are forgetting that years ago, most extended families lived in the same area. Which meant if a senior needed assistance in getting to appointments, there was a family member to drive. Or help with new legal documents. With family around to help with the small things, a pension would go further.

I've also see articles where the technocrats are concerned since seniors aren't adopting a lot of the new technology. Maybe the seniors would rather eat than pay for a data plan.

Have you also noticed that unemployment is at an all time high? My husband was laid off in March 2009. He still hasn't found another FT job. He has made do with temp positions and odd jobs. He even cleans houses to make money. He's not lazy and he did not enjoy having to file for unemployment benefits, but he had little choice. Blame the big fat corporations who are refusing to hire and outsourcing a lot of jobs overseas. Some of these jerks are even discriminating against the unemployed and will ignore applications from anyone who isn't already employed! That's a fact-do a Google search.

there are some flaws in your statement there, bob.

for one, i wasnt aware that computers at the grocery had access to state-wide food assistance data.

you "listen to people talk" so you know their whole situation? i mean you can't seriously be using that as factual data for an argument right?
