Root A fast ROM/Kernel/SetCPU Set Up for those of you interested

Well, I tried CM7 and did like it, and got decent battery life with tiamiat kernel. But the GPS was a bit screwey and that's a function that I need.

Now I'm on MikG 2.5 with Freedom Kernel, setcpu (same setup as OP). Today was first full day, my day starts at 6 am with a morning run around the track, I use endomodo (GPS use) to track my workout. THat's about 30 minutes. I know that's a battery hog so I wrote that on off, down to 82 percent after that 30 minute workout. Then by noon (with very moderate use), I'm down to 39%. I do keep GPS on all the time, but the OP said he did as well. I don't really play any games, moderate use is a few texts, couple calls, little facebook and a little phandroid :)... Am I missing something or is every phone it's own entity?

I get just over 10 hours heavy use like real heavy all gaming and i always keep wifi,4g and gps on, and what do you mean by missing something?

you are correct in that every phone is different, especially with kernels. what may work for you will not work for me. that is why it is hard to recommend a kernel when they ask because it may not work as well for that person then it does for me.

You should see a drop like that initially. Non-SBC kernels charge to 100% and then drop to around 90% and then will recharge back to 100% all while your phone is still on the charger. Unfortunately, the battery reading will still show 100% while your phone is doing this, so while it may seem like your battery level is dropping like a rock, it's actually just your battery meter catching up to the true charge level that your battery has.

Chop Suey is still running rock solid for me. I feel like it gives me a little better battery life than Freedom...when I first ran the regular Freedom kernel, my battery life stunk, but with More Freedom, it seemed pretty good. I'll probably give chop suey a few more days and then switch back to Freedom to give it a go and get a good comparison. So far today I'm at 82% after being off charger for 5.5 hours, but I have admittedly not used my phone a whole lot today.

Running the same setup as OP. Battery went from 100% to 95% from just unplugging the thing. 3H 21M on battery and sitting at 80%

You will see a fast drop to 90% when you first unplug it. That is the way they have the charging set up on the kernels without SBC. Once they put SBC into the kernels, you will get a full 100% charge out of it. Is that 3 hours idle or being used? I am running MikG3D on the stock kernel, light to moderate use at 7 hours off charge and 81% remaining. Wifi is always on at work and home so that is a battery saver. Accounts sync every 4 hours or so instead of every 30 minutes to an hour like the defaults.

SBC is out for ChopSuey, in the testing phase;)

Hey,

Alright, I've been toying around with ROM's and kernels for a bit now and I think I landed on a pretty good setup that has great performance and great battery life. So with that, here we go:

ROM: MikG 2.5 (Sense 2.1 + 3.0)
Kernel: More Freedom v0.8.5
SetCPU: OC'd to 1113Mhz and 128Mhz min, using the Smartass scaler. Its important NOT to have a screen off profile, it only slows things down. I've tried.

I'm also using LauncherPro.

Some info about the set up:

  • Battery life: Currently, I'm on 9 hours, 16 minutes, and 18 seconds and I have 80% battery life left. I was just playing Angry Birds for like 30 minutes as well.
  • I will update this with maximum battery life stats, but yesterday I was over 16 hours with ~50% and that was with moderate to heavy use using GPS, etc.

Ok so Ive done that same setup and i do notice a performance increase still testing battery life but Ive noticed that with this ROM I can only add 2 gmail accounts. I use 1 account for calendar , 1 account for all and a 3rd gmail for the email only. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this problem ?

EVERYONE ,

please when posting let us know what kind of battery you have in your device. because some of us are expecting these same results when youve gone out and purchased a extended battery or done some other hack or mod. Im running a stock battery with the Mikg 2.5 and a freedom kernel and I will admit that I havent charged my device in over 14 hours and I have around 39% left on the device. Wifi was on all night as well. on stock my phone barely lasted from 8am till noon on its full charge so I am definitely noticing. I have setcpu running the exact same as the original poster and It works great .

Opposite what most of you say it became even worse. Now i average 3 hours with a heavy use at the most. Can any of you point me out what am i doing wrong

Thank you in advance for all your help

Welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!1:D:D:D:D:D

Not sure why you can't overclock/underclock. Did you give setcpu superuser permissions?

It should last longer than 3 hours....check your up time vs awake time. It sounds like something is constantly running and draining your battery. If the numbers match, then you have a wakelock.

Yes you were right i changed settings in perflock, now i reinstalled it and could overclock it, but it still not making it better. Maybe you have another suggestion on how to fix the problem. Sorry for bugging you with it

So my first post (actually second if you count my test post- thanks OCNBRZE) and I rooted one week ago. I am sooooo into this and customizing.

Here is what I am on (crack) ;):
ROM- EVOlvedROMr3chargeD
KERNEL- GoldenMonkey-1.1

GoldenMonkey allows me to stay at 1190 with out the SetCPU going crazy. I tried Freedom Aggressive and Chop Suoy but they wont let me stay at 1190 or higher without an automatic reboot.

I have SetCPU, ROM Manager, Battery Calibration, Quadrant, Linpack for performance guages.

I love the ROM I am on now with the Kernel I has Set CPU at:
GOVERNOR- Performance
MAX- 1190400
MIN- 245000
Profile:
Charging- 1190 MAX&MIN
Sleep/Standby- 245 MAX&MIN
Battery <100%- 1190 MAX, 245 MIN
<40%- 921 MAX, 245 MIN
<15%- 614 MAX, 245 MIN

OVERCLOCKING is able to go up to 126720 but when on that setting it immediatly reboots the EVO.

LONGBENCH is at an average of 398.2 (ran 5 tests); SHORTBENCH is at an average of 192 (ran 5 tests).

MFLOPS is at an average of 41.24 (ran 5 tests)

QUADRANT is at 1133.

I want to MAX IT OUT TOTALLY with this ROM (or one that is like it or others that have a better recomendation) with as much HORSEPOWER AS IT CAN TAKE (but I do want to use my phone for more than 1 hour before the battery dies , that that into consideration).

I am into the visual and wow features of a ROM. I am not just performace junkey. So a crapy looking functioning ROM that isnt fun to use or have wow features would outway my wish for higher performance.

What does anyone think about my posting info and where can I go from here?

I have seen a V6 Supercharger for scripts, is this something I should have?? Does this help?

ok first of all do not use rom manager. it is very buggy and will cause more issues then it it worth. also i would recommend that you switch recovery to amon ra 2.3. it is a much better recovery. the instructions are in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. also be carefu with having too many profiles. it will just make setcpu work that much harder and could cause an increase in battery drain. but judging from your post and set up looks like battery is not as much of a concern.

Well you're definitely going to want Sense ROMs, they've got great features and a few of them function just as well (if not better) than the stock ROM. Check out the ROMS/KERNELS download sticky, there are links to XDA Dev pages and whatnot that will have screens and details and posts all about the different ones.

As far as performance vs. battery life, everything is going to be a trade-off. If you want the phone to run hot, it's going to draw more power. If you set a profile or two and follow the settings recommended above, you should find as good of a balance as you're going to get. Try different ROM/Kernel combos to see what your phone likes best.

I've actually been running a stock kernel lately because the boost from the V6 Supercharger script was so noticeable. I'd give that a shot prior to messing with SetCPU and just see what happens.
