Ice Cream Sandwich?

I see the Droid Prime/Nexus Prime is rumored to be coming out with Ice Cream Sandwich. My question is, is Ice Cream Sandwich really better than what the Bionic will be coming out with? Will the Bionic eventually get the Ice cream Sandwich update after it is released?

I'm using the OG Droid so basically anything will be better than what I have now.

My Bionic will have Ice Cream Sangweech on it within 6 months ... one way or the other.

I'm not sure how much better ICS will be but the Bionic will get it for sure. There's no doubt about that. How long it will take is a different question.

ICS, from all reports, really is a major reworking of the Android OS, from the ground up in some areas, and it should have a lot of new and exciting features for us to drool over.

With the added bugs of it first coming out. Of course, these get fixed in time.

I honestly believe that this time around there are going to be significantly fewer bugs on release - they know better what to look for, and yes, there will be some that they never thought of - but no software release is ever a perfect release from get go.

Maybe this time next year moto will release ICS OTA for Bionic.

That's kinda unfair - they released the first Eclair update relatively quickly, IIRC....

I just don't like the fact that it will have a locked bootloader. You might be able to root, but you won't be able to flash custom kernels.

I highly doubt that Moto will ever unlock the stupid thing, either. They say May, they mean July. They say June, they mean September. They say they'll unlock bootloader in November, I don't think they ever will.

I'm not a big fan of Motorola at all. I may buy the Bionic, but I'm not going to look at them when I pass the money over.

The Photon got unlocked. It's possible.

I've searched a little and can't find too much on ICS specs. Any helpful links for me?

Look at how long ago gingerbread was released by google? Late last year. And just now, Moto is able to get it to most of their phones. And that's just a small (relatively speaking) upgrade from Froyo.

ICS is a big jump from gingerbread. So I'm guessing it will take them about a year to come out with upgrade for current/near future phones....

UNLESS the Google purchase of Moto has a big influence on the speed in which they get updates out. then maybe we'll have ICS 3 to 6 months after Google announces it. Less if its AOSP (doubt it) thus no need to modify blur to work with it.

I believe Google owning Motorola will change the priority of updates. It will go Nexus, Motorola, and then every other manufacturer.

I think starting with the next Motorola Droid smartphone you will see more favoritism from Google.

I got a quick question for y'all tech heads, if you don't mind.

Now that Bionic is rooted, I assume that devs will be working on ICS roms once that comes out from Google.

Does a rom based on a software update work as well on a handset that hasn't had the release updated to it yet?

I ask this because I've heard in other forums that each phone has it's own "system" (I don't know what else to call it), and that each OTA update is rolled out to a particular phone after the software has been customized to work with that phone's "system."

In other words, I understand that if you take the same ICS from Prime and port it over to Bionic, it won't work, or it won't work well. Is this true?

ROMs have to be specifically configured to support a given device. The stock Droid Prime software will not work on the Droid Bionic. It is possible a developer will create an ICS ROM that will support both devices but you can't just take the software from the Droid Prime and put it on the Droid Bionic. Imagine a Windows install disc, but the disc has drivers for one model of computer and literally nothing else. That's how a lot of Android ROMs are.
