Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

Just an update from me since I recommended in this thread to not upgrade to GB. I rooted when it became available a little over a week ago to get rid of the issues I was experiencing. Most of which have been outlined in this thread. I put CM7 on the phone and I'm happy to report no more constant sense crashing, camera issues, memory problems, etc. I'm back to loving my Evo again.

I keep checking this thread every few days to see if Sprint came out with a GB update that actually is stable. Still no go.

Per Sprint's Twitter and Community Forums, there is a Maintenance Release that was put out today.

On the forum, it lists what was fixed. The only thing that I have seen widely reported that was fixed was the Voice To Text feature. The others I have not ever really seen anyone complain about.

The response on the forums states that the Sense reload issue is still present, however, a Sprint mod has responded that the issue is still being investigated and worked on.

I will likely download the update when I have better coverage at home.

Honestly, no need to rehash all the complaints here by me, but the ONE thing that still tees me off is that since the update, the phone wont connect to my car through bluetooth. Froyo did but GB wont. No fix and no solutions. Totally sucks and very dangerous to use the phone while in the car now. I am at my wits end and dont know what to do.

Clear the device from your car. Unpair it. Repair but this time don't allow the car to download the phone book when it asks. Should work then other than the phone book part. Which is better than nothing.

Already tried that. Didnt work. Wont connect at all no matter what I do. Sprint had me reset the phone to the original settings because they said GB was corrupted and that didnt work either. The Sprint repair shop said it is a GB problem that Google needs to fix through an update. Im at my wits end with this.

Thanks for the suggestion though

I haven't had any problems with the update. Well, the only issue it voice to text not working. Which I understand is addressed in the next update.

I do have a question regarding the Sense UI re-booting. My does do this but only I go into my applications and try to manage some of them myself. If I FC Footprints Widget, Stocks, Or the Friendstream widget then Sense will reboot on me.

So my question is, Those having the constant Re-boot issue, are you running an App killer? Perhaps it's killing those apps and it appears that Sense needs them to run so that it itself can run.

If this has already been covered then sorry for bringing it up.

HELP! I can't get my phone to take the update. It's saying it downloaded fine, but then when it goes to apply, it get's about a 1/3 of the way through and crashes, and i have to do a hard reset. I've tried it six or seven times, over mobile network and wifi.

are you rooted? if not you can just take it in to a sprint store.

Interesting discussions about GB and the latest maintenance update but, I do have a question I don't see anywhere on here. I have steadfastly kept my Evo 4G to stock Froyo (not an easy task seeing as how I'm on my 3rd Evo in two months but that's a different story) because of all the horror stories about GB. If indeed the maintenance update "fixes" GB (primarily, in my case the voice to text, very important) if I were to download GB would it come with the maintenance update installed or do I have to do a separate download after GB? In your best opinion, should I just leave Froyo on the Evo and wait until everyone says "Finally, GB is really fixed this time."? Seriously, I'm happy with Froyo but there are reasons to upgrade to GB. Not sure what to do. Thanks!

If I were you, I would root froyo, make a backup, then flash the latest rooted update. That way, if voice to text is broken, you can just flash back.

What are those reasons?

My wife has 2.2, I have 2.3 & she never has:
Sluggishnish
Random reboots
Voice to Text issues
Random Sense reboots.

And that is with a fresh restore.
Other than that it's great...

Haha, your light sarcasm is not lost on me. You do provide clarity on the whole fiasco. Thanks. BTW, it boggles the mind why HTC, SPRINT and Google, with all their combined resources and obvious "intellectual" capabilities can't get this stuff straight. However, I realize that there are so many different phones now that getting an IS to function perfectly on all of them must (obviously) be a daunting task.

I thank you for your kind indulgence @ my attempt of sarcasm.
But as a consumer you have a right to demand the best for your money.
Unfortunately, Google,HTC & SPCS have not given you the goods while ostensibly charging you the same prices as the most stable & updated iPhones.

That said, users of Android & its go-go ecosystem must enter it knowing full well that with its built in flexibility & vast user base, there will be a lot of self service & trial & error.

Good luck & don't fix what is not broken. Wait for the all-clear.
& thank the Android expeditioners that came before you! LOL!

Right! And, having been one of those early users since I got the HTC Eris back in '09 and immediately discovered this great forum (and a few others), I have gone through the same experiences as you and I (and many others). Aside from the GB nightmare, I have enjoyed every one of the 6 different Android phones and subsequent updates on both VZW and Sprint. I have no doubt that Android will become the major platform world-wide in the future. Unless of course Apple and its plethora of lawsuits derails the whole thing...highly doubtful. Cheers!

The first GB update didn't give me much trouble. The voice to text didn't work right, but I don't use that.

I installed the new 4.53 fix over Labor Day and now I have random restarts and the camera is crazy unstable. It freezes and locks up with no apparent pattern. But I can't use the camera for more than a few minutes or a few photos without a freeze.

Anyone else? Any fixes? I don't run much software except for the bloatware Sprint includes. Pandora is about it.

I also am VERY upset that when I'm in swype typing, when I can usually double tap a word to get the right suggestions to pop up, I can only have the "copy paste" menu pop up. (Does anyone know how to fix that?).

I know that people said to put the cursor in the word and hit the Swype key, but I'm like you....I DOUBLE TAP the word (which is faster than cursor then moving to the Swype key). Now when I double tap, I get the menu, not the alternate word options. It may sound like a small thing, but the double tap (imho) was more convenient that a single tap, then moving to tap again. I just got this update a couple of days ago and it's been annoying me ever since :(

Just updated with latest SPCS/HTC update version 2.3.5 or 4.67 & it looks like it has solved all of our issues such as:

Sluggishness
Random reboots
Camera Freeze
Random Sense reboots.

Get yourselves updated (if you are non-Rooted!)

Hopefully, you can help me.. I am NOT rooted but I am still stuck on ... Android Version, 2.2 Baseband Version, 2.15.00.09.01 Kernel Version, 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e Software Number, 3.29.651.5 System Upgrade, 3.70.651.1 And every time I tried updating. It won't give me this GINGERBREAD or any updates at all, meaning, other than the one I have. So, do you know if there is a website with the update or am I screwed out of Gingerbread... Thanks in advance

I answered your post in the other thread, but here is a link to a file you run from your computer with the device connected in "Charge only" mode. USB Debugging must be enabled on your device (Settings -> Applications -> Development, check USB Debugging), and HTC Sync must be installed on your computer.

Just download the file and run. Make sure the device is sufficiently charged. It'll walk you through the necessary steps to update.

Thanks for the advice and the link doesn't work. Is that the correct link or is that a link that I must go to via the HTC browser?

Sorry - Link is fixed :)

Alright, thank you and I would've replied earlier but I was busy doing stuff and I am updating the cell now, but I do need to know.. I do not believe in using roots/hacks/custom roms/jailbreaking a phone. Whatever hackers like to call it. So, is this a legit rom from Sprint/HTC. If it is, then great, and if it is not, then how can I go about removing it. Thanks again..
