Hi ya'll.

I didn't create any of this.... I just took pieces from a few different places and repackaged it in an easy to use format.

Hope this helps!

What you'll need:

1) a USB cord

2) These files. Nexus One Tether Files.zip One Tether Files.zip
You NEED to extract them IN THE C:\ DRIVE (so the files should be in C:\NexusTether ) IT WILL NOT WORK IF NOT PLACED HERE (if you want it elsewhere, all you need to do is edit nexustether.bat to reflect the change. )

3) Proxoid Installed on your phone

4) an easy proxy solution for your browser ( i use Proxy Switchy! for Chrome. Works great.

Ok---let's start on your phone. Make sure you have Proxoid installed.

p1) No, go into your phone settings (home>menu key>settings) click on 'applications', and then 'development' and make sure 'USB Debugging' is checked.

Now let's set up your browser. If you have installed Proxy Switchy!, then
b1) click on the Proxy Switchy! icon in the Chrome toolbar (a blue or gray globe)
b2) choose 'options'
b3) name your profile (I called mine 'nexus one'), choose 'manual configuration', check "use the same proxy server for all....", and type "localhost" (without parenthesis) in the "http proxy" box and "8080" for port.
b4) click 'save'

Now we need to install the USB drivers for your phone. This is assuming you are running Windows 7. Vista and XP should be similar.
c1) click the start button, right click on 'computer', and go to 'properties'
c2) select 'device manager'
c3) you should have a 'nexus one' listed there, without drivers (probably a yellow error thing next to the icon)
c4) right click on 'nexus one' and choose "update driver software" or something like that
c5) select "browse my computer for driver software"
c6) point it to the folder you downloaded (should be C:\nexustether if you did it right. If not, time to fix it!) Make sure 'include subdirectories' is included
c7) click 'finish' or whatever. it should find the driver, and install it. this took a few minutes to finish on my computer.

Final step:
f1) go to C:\nexustether, and select 'nexustether.bat'. Copy this file to your desktop (for easy launching). Or you can create a shortcut. Whatever. Both work.
f2) Restart your computer.

Ok--that's it! i know it was a pain, but you only have to do it once.

To Use NexusTether
1) connect your phone to your computer w/ USB cable
2) click on the 'nexustether.bat' that you saved to your computer. It should tell you 'tunnel started' or something like that. If not, ummm....something got messed up.
3) on your phone, launch 'proxoid' and click 'start'
4) click on the Proxy Switchy! globe in your Chrome bar in the upper right hand. select 'nexus one' or whatever you called your profile.

That's it---good to go!

it's only 30 bucks if you buy the full version and the only thing I can see that the full version gives you is access to secure websites. The free version blocks them when the 14 day trial is over. As far as I can tell, pdanet will continue to work fine after 14 days....the only issue being secure site blocking. It's working great for me and was a simple install on the computer and Nexus.

Edit: here it is:

"Note: Once trial expires, you can continue using PdaNet for free. The only difference is that free edition blocks secure web sites."

all the way at the bottom of this page:

FWIW, I made this post on my laptop tethered to my Nexus via pdanet.:D Speed is 2.4Mbps so I'm good with it.

wow, 2.4 Mbps? where and what carrier?

Waaah? I have full signal down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on T-Mobile 3G and I only get about 1 mbp. Am I missing something?
I don't know but pages load on my laptop tethered to the Nexus via pdanet and EDGE a HECK of a lot faster than my Nexus does alone using EDGE. It's strange. I use EDGE on my Nexus and it's, well, just EDGE...not horribly slow, but not 3G, either. I tether the Nexus to my laptop via pdanet and my laptop just flies. It flies normally via wifi but it doesn't seem like that much of a dropoff going to tethering. I also made sure and disconnected from my home wifi....also tested multiple times.

Unfortunately any speeds above 384kbps is not possible on EDGE. Just sayin', there's limitations.

Anyways, +1 for PDAnet. After the 30 days are over, you can still use it for all http sites, just not https (secure)
I'm only relaying what I'm seeing when I go to:

Network Sharing>>>>connection>>>pdanet modem>>>view status

Duration: 1 minute and counting

Speed: 2.4mbps

Bytes sent: 46,228

Bytes Received: 104,155

I just went to speedtest.net and got:

Download: 1.28mb/s

Upload: 0.26mb/s

Ping: 306ms

This is all the info I currently can provide.

Your speedtest results indicate you are on 3G. The 2.4mbps seems to be the link speed of the PDAnet modem.

Like how your ethernet will say 100mbits, but obviously you're not getting those speeds, or wireless g says its 54mbps. Those are the maximum link bandwidths.

Don't know what to say if you're on AT&T, because those speedtest results are not physically possible over EDGE.

Well something is fishy then because there is no way I'm on 3G. I'm getting normal EDGE load times when just out using my Nexus with either Dolphin or the stock browser. Pages load like I would expect, slow but sure.

Here is my setup:

Nexus One unlocked AT&T compatibale version used on a BIS AT&T account as I had Blackberry previously and just popped the SIM in to the Nexus.

Tethered to a Dell laptop via USB

Disable all internet connections

Enable pdanet on my Nexus and Laptop and click connect

verify pdanet is the only internet connection

ran speedtests

verified pdanet was only interent connection again

If there is anything I can do to help figure out what is going on let me know and I'll try. I'm not a computer expert so I could be screwing soemthing up here.:)

Just for kicks I went to speedtest.net on my laptop via my wifi just to make sure I wasn't somehow still connected previously and got:

Download: 3.01mb/s

Upload: 0.31mb/s

Ping: 99ms

exactly what I pay for

Heh, only thing I can think of is that since it's a BIS account, your traffic may still be routed through the RIM servers, which is causing the false readings.

I remember once I did a bandwidth test on my Tour and it returned 12mbps. That may be the culprit.

But hey, if it's working for you, then it's not really a big deal right?
You know I thought of that but I went in to my online att acount and it says all data has been sent via medianet, rather than BIS. In fact, ever since I chnaged devices I never see any data transferred via BIS anymore.

Just for history, I've tethered via a BB pearl using a hack back in the day. Then I tethered my BB Bold via Tetherberry that I won in a Crackberry contest(thanks Crackberry and Teherberry:D), and now the nexus+pdanet.

I don't know what's going on, but this is by far the fastest my laptop has ever been via any kind of tethering to mobile devices. I'm curious to know exactly what is going on, if anything. Might be like you say anyway, just a false reading of some kind....still, the fastest tethering I've ever experienced so whatever is happening is good I suppose.:D

Guys, discussing a peripheral topic (like speed testing or PDAnet's terms of service) in the middle of a post about another topic (like tethering) is hijacking and helps no one.

I could not get the instructions to work. I got "device not found" when trying the adb.exe command. I checked quite a bit on Google and found many others with similar problems. Apparently getting the wrong (but working) drivers installed at the outset is difficult to overcome, especially with Vista.

Any clues about that?

This guide is a pretty roundabout way of accomplishing what PDAnet does for free, so unless you really need the https support, PDAnet is the easiest, most hassel free way of getting tethering working.

I do know that if adb is not recognizing your device, it is because either/both:

-You don't have the drivers installed for N1 (Windows only, Linux & Mac are okay)
-You don't have USB debugging enabled (settings, applications)

No, you don't have to switch to Chrome. Which browser do you use? The proxy settings should be under options and then 'connections' (in both IE or FF)

Folks...I'm curious to know if you can tether your N1 through bluetooth? What are the steps for doing this?

My main reason is this Friday I'll be putting in a pre-order for the iPad (Paid through work...R&D baby!!) and I'm thinking about just getting the wifi version and saying screw the 3G and paying for another service.

Sounds like you have some sort of compression enabled through medianet. I think BIS/BES also uses this and it skews speed tests, making it appear as though your connection is much faster. Would also explain why you're seeing better performance. Fabolous is right. What you're seeing is not possible with an EDGE connection so it's not real.
