Root Just ordered a refurbished NC from BN. How will I know if it's 1.1 or 1.2?

Super excited for it arrive tomorrow and even more excited for my first android root & mod!

According to the "READ ME FIRST" sticky guide in this forum, rooting is different for 1.1 and 1.2 nooks. How will I know?

You mean 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3.

1.2 has "read forever" at startup. O/W, you'll have to go into settings (about Nook Color maybe) to find the version.

If it is 1.2 and it's connected to your wifi, it'll automatically install the 1.3 update when it's idle and screen off for a while.

What are your intentions? Are you a reader, tweaker or what?

Like colchiro said, best way to be sure is go to settings, device info, about your NOOK color. You will see the software version here.

I kept my NC stock, and boot into CM7 from a micro SD card. I advise doing this first to dip your toe into the rooting and rom'ing waters. If you like what you see, and don't miss anything in the stock NC, then root and install a rom on the internal memory.

I bought the NC with the intentions on turning it into a CM7 tablet. Since this is my first root/modding ever and I have only tinkered around with a NC in stores before, I am trying to do my "homework" so I don't screw anything up.

Should I update to this 1.3 update i've heard about first or should I just jump right into installing CM7? I don't want to run it off the SD card since I don't really care about the stock BN software staying intact. What rooting/modding guide should I be using come tomorrow?

If you think you might be interested in books, you might boot into the stock rom, activate it and add a B&N account with CC #. That way your NC is in the B&N database. O/W a factory reset will prevent you from being seen there at all. At least that's what I read last year. (I never did this tho)

If I want to read books on the NC I will just get the Kindle app. But this info is till good to know.

Do I really need to run CM7 off an SD card? From some of the things I've read i can just run CM7 directly off the nook. I have no intention on ever going back or ever using the BN software. If booting from an SD card is really the best way to run CM7 I will do it, but it just seems a little pointless since I won't ever want to pop out the card and play with a stock nook.

Sdcard is awkward, slower, more fragile and harder to update. If your NC works properly and you don't need stock, I'd forget about it.

I'd play with the stock rom for a bit, make sure it works, make sure your sdcard works and is bootable, then flash the bugger.

FWIW, the sdcard slot and power cord are fragile so be careful with them and they'll last you quite a while.

This is the video I used along with the written directions. I flashed CM7 right away,directly on the Nook, bypassing the CM7 on Sd card route. I was ready to root as I've rooted my phone (and wife's phone). We both have EVO's.

This is a solid tablet once you root. I don't use my phone as much as I used to. Now, I'm not in a big hurry to get a new phone

Hey just updating for anyone who is currently following this for help (or in the future).

I just prepared my microSD card following the video above. Everything went great except for the win32 disk imager. The link in the description of the video takes you to the latest version of the win32 (version 3.0 I think). With this version of the software I kept getting an error saying my card didn't have enough space on it when it clearly did. But luckily it was a simple fix. Just download and run Win32 disk imager 1.0 and this older version should work just fine (I tried 3.0 and 2.0 and neither worked).

I will update again tomorrow and let anyone who is still reading know if I pulled off my install of CM7. I don't think I'll even boot newly refurbished NC into it's stock BN digs. I'll give it a fresh start at a new life being a CM7 tablet by powering it on for the first time with this microSD card in it!

I hope your bootable sdcard is version 3.2.0.1, o/w you get an error while formatting data with B&N 1.2 or 1.3. It'll say the version when you boot off of it.

Also, does your directions say to repartition it?

Looks like I downloaded ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5 from reading the description. Will I run into any issues using this version?

Won't know what worked and what didn't for about another 5 hours (when I leave the office and check the mail for my NC).

If you're on B&N 1.2 or 1.3 (read forever at startup), you'll need 3.2.0.1 or you won't be able to format data (which means it'll never boot up).

It's easy tho, just unzip about 4 files and rename (or replace) the files with the same name on your sdcard and you're ready to go. It's nice to see if it boots first before updating them so if something doesn't work you know if you need to reflash or recopy the files.

It'll work, but you'll end up with a 1 gb card with 1 gb wasted.

Sorry, I realize you like the video better than my guides, but it seems out of date. I update my CM7 guide about once a week.

Well I was finally able to install CM7 7.0.2 on my NC!

I used CWM 3.2.0.1 and also the latest gapps pack.

But a lot of the apps in the market are unavailable to me!

I'm so sad that the market isn't working.

I tried the install the Facebook app and Angry Birds but their respective market pages are missing an install btn

Did I screw something up?

RE: Market.... I noticed the same thing when I did a factory reset prior to giving my NC to my sister-in-law. You have to uninstall market updates, then open market. If you want to keep that market version, you can freeze or rename market updater.apk.

From what I've read this may fix it.
