should I update to Android 2.3?

Mine has 2.2, should I update it or should I root it first? I have no experience with rooting, just got the phone yesterday.

Good question and I can't answer it. I know the negatives of 2.3 on the desire but not the positives. I have assumed its better but I don't know why.

I can tell you that the official 2.3 on the desire takes up more space than 2.2 so you will have more issues with internal memory.
It is also more difficult to root on 2.3 so if you want to root its better to do that first then flash a custom 2.3 Rom that has all you want from an OS. The official update is missing some stuff to make it fit in the desires limited internal memory, while still keeping some stuff that most people don't want.

But, my own experience with rooting is that its confusing unless you're very computer savvy, especially when things go wrong. So tread carefully.

I am still on an unrooted 2.2 after failing to root and nearly bricking my phone. I won't upgrade to the official 2.3 as I feel it will cause even more hassle with low memory. So I'm waiting to pluck up the courage to try rooting in the future.

hey.ive done the 2.3 upgrade and i dont think i have any problems with it.the only thing missing is the flashlight but you can get one from the market so no biggie.the layout is a wee bit different and some of the features are new.still im not in the need to want to go back to 2.2 so all in all im happy with it.

Flashlight.apk is included in the Gingerbread zip file (along with Teeter) to reinstall if required.

I've had my Desire about 18 months now. I installed the official 2.3 update, thinking it might sort out some of the low internal memory problems that I've been plagued with.

There were a few benefits, such as landscape mode phone dialler. But, if anything, it made memory matters worse! In the end, I resorted to rooting (which is more difficult once you have installed the 2.3 update), and installing a custom ROM, and this has finally sorted out my memory issues.

If the apps you use have not resulted in low memory issues, you may benefit from the GB update. Otherwise, I'd avoid it, and consider rooting from Froyo.

From all I've read about the HTC update, and from my own experiences with rooting, I would say either stay on Froyo or root your phone and install a Gingerbread ROM.

I agree completely with you chilly.
The best thing to do is root. It is not as complicated as it seems just make sure that you read the guides on this forum and just follow the steps. There are a number of videos on YouTube which show how easy it is but just make sure you have followed the set up steps from the guides on here especially with regards to custom recover and erase size 40000. I was nervous to start with but made the leap ans i am still nervous about s-off but have no reason to do this at present so am not rushing into it.

This is the most helpful and friendly forum I have used ans people are always willing to help. So read the guides and take the plunge .......

I installed the official HTC Gingerbread upgrade last night and only had one fright when my PC insisted on re-booting half way through the process! But the installation continued normally and the only headache was to work out why APN Lock no longer worked (basically I had to manually enter the APN settings for mobile data connectivity to T-Mobile).

Overall I'm very pleased. The power up time, like everyone else says, really is fast, the UI tweaks are subtle but nice, and I find I have a lot more memory than I used to. There must have been some kind of memory leak before.

PS My Desire is a 'first generation (with the AMOLED screen)' device about 18 months old and was bought from CFWH, so it's unbranded.
