Help Android OS eating all my battery

There's an issue that need addressing. I've read in other forums that people are getting bad battery life and when checking the usage they are seeing "Android OS" at 75% or more. I got 6 hours idle today and my phone died, "Android OS" was at 91%!. Hope it gets updated. From what I gathered it takes a couple cycles before this starts happening. My battery life was great when in first got my phone. Anyone else got this issue? Ideas?

PS, I removed all auto updating widgets and it does not help

If it were a particular app then that app would be listed under battery usage as the reason for the drainage. This is listed as Android OS. It's got something to do with the OS. I just need to know if anyone here is have the issue and if they may have found a solution. If some one is not having the same issue right now doesn't mean it won't start. The people at sprint are idiots, I'm not letting them touch my phone

Okay, let's try diagnosis. You state that the Android System is using up to 95%. Under moderate to heavy use, I get around 57% usage. If your phone is sleeping, high usage of the OS may not be that abnormal. After all, the other apps, relative to the OS would have near zero usage.

On the other hand, 75% usage of the OS may be high, but it depends upon so many factors. What kind of trouble shooting have the others engaged in? Have you stripped the phone down to the original programs? Have you tried a factory reset to see if something added to the phone since purchase contributed to the bad battery life?

Usually, electronics do not get bad without something being added to the mix. I have loaded up my phone with programs, but these haven't yet had an effect on the battery life. Certainly, we can monitor our usage and see if there are any battery issues.

I haven't gone back to stock just yet but I did remove almost all widgets, changed from a live wallpaper and I constantly check running services. In the other forum some reported success with a reboot. I have rebooted realizing that I have not rebooted since I bought it last Friday lol. Im still waiting to see if that cured the issue.

My suggestion if the reboot doesn't solve the problem is to do a factory hard reset. I know this is pain in the ass because you have to reset all of your windows, or panels, or whatever they call them. (You might try using the back up in the Kies app for settings, emails and preferences, although I don't know how far it goes into setting up the panels and apps.)

Once you reset, you should slowly add back apps and take note of the usage. The problem with some of these app designers is that they disregard battery and background usage. In any case, make a list of apps so you don't forget what you had, or use appbrain on the market for your list.

You never know what might happen when you add apps to your phone. Someone suggested that I try an FM radio app to see if the Epic Touch had an FM receiver that might work. Against my better judgment I tried it. The app didn't work and I immediately uninstalled it. Later, I had a forceclose issue and up popped an alert that the FM app I had removed wasn't working and would have to be forceclosed. So an uninstall doesn't remove all the app? Worrisome.

I am having the same issue as well the Android OS is always showing 73% or more and although my battery on this phone is better than on my Evo, it is still not as great as everyone on here is making it out to be. I also noticed my phone getting hot while charging a few times. Maybe I have a defective unit?

I don't know if it helps but my battery is dying really fast so I turned off device and sd card encryption and the.battery drained just as fast. thats good news for me because I feel slightly more secure knowing the data on my phone is encrypted

There is always the issue of expectations that may be the biggest factor between users and determining how well a phone's battery life is, so it's hard to say that a handset is exceptional in this department. What puzzles me is that I haven't had an Android phone recently that had the OS as the leading usage factor, and by a large margin. It is usually the display, or voice calls, or cell standby (if my signal was weak or non existant). Is this typical for everyone using this phone?

This was a big problem on the SGS II (Non-US) version when it came out. An update fixed it. I guess over the next few days we will see if more people start having the problem but for now if I were you I would call and start complaining.

Haven't had any issues with mine. The other day it did drain quite quickly but found out Hanging With Friends was "hanging out" in the background destroying the battery. I consistently get 15+ hours

No problems here either. Android OS only shows 6% and System Shows 9%.

I'm having the EXACT same problem. I actually got good battery life on my Evo (12 hours+ with no issues) and I now I'm struggling to get 12 with the SGS2E4GT. Android OS is always the highest %-age when looking at battery. I've turned off all syncing, lowered the backlight, and so on and nothing seems to help.

Since I changed my battery 2 and a half hours ago, Android OS has accounted for 50% of the usage, with Voice calls (29 min) being next at 21%. Display, which seems to the most hungry of processes on any other phone I've used, is only accounting for 11%

I'd really like to get input from as many as possible s that we can see if this is just typical or if something unusual is going on.

I hate it when people say oh its just your phone, I have th issue too and so does alot of other people phone will only last about 6.5 with light-moderate usage with nothing syncing and the OS being the top drainer by a long shot

OP - Have you tried a factory reset yet? Are you stock or rooted?

I'm not the op but I'm stock and tried hard reset and even switched the phone out and didn't install any apps just to see. No luck with any of that

Thanks Kelmar. I did a factory reset yesterday and today my battery life is back to normal and Android OS under battery usage is at 40% which I still think is high. My battery indicator tank icon in the status bar is still full and I took my phone off the charger at 10am and it now 718pm. That's with constantly checking battery stats and tinkering. I only have Facebook,twitter, and tesla led apps downloaded. Accuweather widget and digital clock widget as well as calendar widget running. Wifi is running and my signal is always full due to my Airrave. I did an immediate reboot after coming off the charger this morning as well. Hopefully this sucsess will continue. Instill think an update is needed so that I don't have to tip toe around my phone thinking every act will drain my battery.

I seem to remember Facebook draining battery's on the EVO at one point, think it was after the Froyo update? Do you stay logged on Facebook, or log off when you aren't using the site?

I believe it's a bug introduced in Android 2.3.4 cause it seems to be happening to alot of devices running 2.3.4 including the Nexus S and the international SGS2

Mine is around 47% also, but with moderate use yesterday I got abour 14 hrs and had around 15% battery life left, way better than my evo ever did. I was lucky to go 4 to 5 hrs on it. So i'm happy with this phone, if an update can fix this issue and squeeze another couple hours, I would be excited.

I picked up my phone 6 days ago and previously did not have any issue with a high Android OS drain. After reading this forum yesterday (thanks for the jinx, guys !) I now have a 64% OS drain after 2 hours of usage. I'll check throughout the day and see but maybe it's just because it's only 7% drained and 64% of that 7% was from the OS.

I'm new to Android, so I don't know what's typical but I got 13 hours and 34 mins yesterday before it died (I did charge it for about 30 mins in the car though), had only about 45 mins of calls and a total app drain of about 10%. Is this similar to what everyone else is getting? I keep hearing everyone rave about the battery, but this doesn't seem too exceptional to me.

I tried a hard reset last night and it seemed to have helped, Android OS percentage dropped below 50% and wasn't at the top of the list for the first time, but I'll keep an eye on it.

I'm having the same issue with "Android OS" by far the most energy-expensive entry in my battery use screen. Whereas "Android OS" was always less than 10% before, it is now between 25-50%. I have tried several things to beat this problem, including rebooting, switching batteries entirely, and removing every app I've installed. (BTW, I have a Nexus S 4G, not an Epic, so this seems to be Android-wide, or possibly with Samsung-Android phones.)

My guess is the system update from a few days ago is the culprit and I hope Samsung/Google/Sprint fix it very soon. In the meantime, I'm having to do some serious battery management juggling. Ugh.
