Official Release Date Rumor Thread

You know even given all the frustration of waiting for the phone, and yes there are better, faster, cooler phones potentially in the pipeline, I'm prett sure I'm going to get this phone. I really considered waiting to see if the Galaxy Prime comes to AT&T in a reasonable amount of time, but figured given what happened with this phone why take the risk of waiting.

I am in the same boat. If I knew for sure I would wait. That unfortunately is far from the case.

I'm wondering does everyone think there will be lines waiting to get this phone on Sunday morning the 2nd?

so should I get there early?

Another question should I get a screen protector...or is that like adding a sweater over a kevlar vest?

haha... there will not be a line, i would recomend you get there right when it opens just in case they dont have alot, but not a long enough line. nobody was in the store opening day of the sprint version. granted I think more tech people flock to AT&T than sprint, so we will see

They are planning a free breakfast for those who show up before 6AM. :D

Lines, not a chance unless it's to pay a past due bill. 99% of the people out there have no idea what a "Galaxy S2" is. If it were an iPhone 99% would have heard of it. Lines are only for iPhones. People line up for iPhones even if they don't plan on buying one. It's a cult.

my bad, unboxing video

Some of these "unboxing" videos really crack me up. "The box is Tropicana orange with writing on all 4 sides. Look, they use a new type of seal, it is clear plastic instead of with printing on it. The ink they used is slightly different than the last box and then use such cheap styrofoam." JUST OPEN THE DAMNED BOX! :D

I think there might be afew people there right at opening to get the phone, but I am guessing there won't be a line..... like iPhone release day lines. I went to Sprint on their release day at lunch time. The sales guy said there were a few people at the door when they opened to buy it. We were there at 12:30PM and they didn't have any left (not sure how many they got). I'm going to get there a 1/2 hour early or so.

I absolutely hate screen protectors. I've never seen one that I liked. Some are certainly better than others. For cases, I prefer something minimal that covers the sides and corners. As long as the case has a lip on the front, it should keep the screen from skidding across the floor when you drop it. I guess it depends on how you treat it. My wife often puts her phone in her purse where it rubs against all kinds of stuff. I dedicate a pocket for mine.

Did anybody ever get confirmation on whether or not the Oct. 2nd release date was in fact coordinated with the phone being preloaded with a copy of Transformers 3? I saw the unboxing video, but it didn't mention anything about it. I personally liked the movie and would enjoy it.
i didn't see anything on any of the unboxing videos so i'm presuming it's not on there. as i said earlier in the thread, the preloading of movies was always a Tmobile thing so if anything their version will come with it, not ours.

Has anyone seen where AT&T or Samsung has stated the device will have NFC? I know everyone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone says it will but I haven't seen it officially mentioned by AT&T or Samsung. Has it been actually confirmed?
while watching the AT&T un-boxing video that was posted earlier i noticed that on the battery it has Near Field Communication written on it. I don't know if this answers your question but i'm hoping it does come with NFC.

What i know:

according to the FCC and the AT&T battery it's there. i think it just wasn't included in the software. seeing as how the phone was built in collaboration with ATT i don't see them asking to take it out. add in the fact that they would have had to refile the FCC paperwork and it would have been noticed if there was an update to the i777.
by me. because i check the site pretty much daily.
it used to be hourly until it finally showed up.

My suppositions:

so... it's in there, the code was either left out or is disabled and will probably be added in at a later time once either Google Wallet moves beyond just the Nexus S or ATT/Tmob/Ver get ISIS up and running.

even if i have a dumbphone? the rep said i'd have to change to a smartphone plan.

I have a dumbphone with a 12 year old $30 (250min + night/weekends) plan that no longer exists. The rep in the store told me that all I needed to do to switch to the Galaxy S2 is to add at least the $15 data package. I'm currently planning to have the Attain for $45/mo. If they change this on me I'll be pissed.

Where was the October 2nd date confirmed? ATT still will not confirm a date to me by phone or in the store. October 2nd is now a week away, and they should know by now.

Understood...but I go back to my argument of how much time does it really take for a competing company to take leaked info and react.

And when I say react..I mean get the leaked info, work it into your current design, pilot test, put into production, and stick it on the shelf to sell.

If Apple, HTC, etc. can do ALL that in 3-4 weeks.....then I stand corrected. But if this whole process takes 3-4 months (I think it takes longer than that, but just to be on the conservative side)....then whats the harm in letting people know something 1 month in advance?

Again..no expert here in cell phone manufacturing, just waxing philosophically on business / marketing logistics.

Its not because competition might make a new product, but that they may adjust their pricing sooner to make the new release less attractive.

Yea, that's what I was thinking as well. It's there but not enabled. Not like anyone around here will support it until after the phone is a relic other than maybe Exxon or Mobil where they already use the SpeedPass key tag (or whatever they call it) to pay for gas or goodies. I've been using that for years but that doesn't necessarily mean the NFC in the phone would support it even if it were active.
