Help Screen shifts up while writing a text message

Latest exchage with HTC:

I spoke with an Escalations Team member and he said we have had this issue happen on every ROM version. Whether that version is official or unofficial it still happened. So this turns out to be a quirk with Android in general and he said there is nothing wrong with your device.

He also suggested you might want to try a third party messaging application from the Market to see if this works better for you.

Guess I'll try Handcent or something to see if it helps. Or just live with it. My phone was fine for a while, but now the issue is cropping up. Maybe I'll first try deleting all of the text threads since it was fine for a few weeks after I got it.

My wife has an Evo Shift and is having this issue as well on her phone. Here and other forums, it seems the best solution is to use another messaging app - Handcent and Go SMS being the 2 most often mentioned. I've got her on board with that, I was just wondering what might be the best option for her? Once I set it up on her phone, she's not going to play with any customizations, themes, options, etc - she just wants something to allow her to send and read text messages. For a non-technical end user that for the most part doesn't care about how many options are available, is one of them a better option?

By all accounts, they're both pretty good.

The stock app should be replaced in any case - there are two timestamps in an sms, the stock app gets the wrong one and can thread messages out of order.

FWIW, I use Handcent - it just works. Others I trust use Go, so I'd say toss a coin a go for it. I've yet to see Handcent remove the area code when replying, fwiw.

in an email conversation with HTC atm and they are acknowledging that there seems to be a problem like this with slider android phones... i will post a response if there is a solution <3

@EarlyMon i will mention the time stamp problem in my next reply too!

Well - best luck with that, but the problem is really coming from the code in the Android open source repository from Google, and it's already well-known by everyone.

No evidence Google is even close to trying to fix this stuff.

Handcent is free and just works - I highly recommend it.

And I mention this last time - Welcome to the forums!

She tried both Handcent and Go SMS, and she's liked Handcent the best (I think mainly because of the smiley's menu :) ), and hasn't had any major issues.

Note that I have a Samsung Epic, and my stock messaging app has had no issues, so I think it is an HTC issue, not Google.

Timestamp or text shifting?

Timestamp is Google's fault, doesn't affect all users - if it did, it might have been believed and caught sooner.

In any case, HTC is promising that for the Thunderbolt, an upcoming release will fix the timestamp issue.

you're right. after a few emails, HTC said that its a known problem with Android OS on all phones and to just continue using a different SMS app. i'm going to try to start an email convo with someone from google about this problem... i guess we can only hope HTC getting complaints will force them to question google themselves. but i'm still trying! thanks a bunch, will post if anything else happens from here :)

Well, that's the great thing about Android - more good apps here are free than on other phone types, and some good dev is usually in the wings to provide a solution when another dev screws up.

Besides - Handcent offers so much more in the way of configuring notifications and dealing with MMS, I started using it for that reason long before I was aware of this issue.

All of this can be fixed by using GoSMS Pro.
It's free.

I used to have this same problem and I switched and have never looked back.

This is a very good app.
It is basic, but can be complex if you want it to be (themes, colors, fonts, etc.) You can back up your settings and messages on a schedule or whenever you want.

Honestly, switch to something other than stock and you will not have this problem ever again.
