Droid 3 OTA Reports/Issues

Sweet! Glad you got your low-light video problem resolved! It seems the Droid 3 is getting set to hit it's stride. The future is bright! ....and 20fps, lol :)

well 20fps in lowlight. i wonder what would happen if i set it to 25..or even 30 fps.

im assuming that the higher you set the minimum low light FPS to, the harder it taxes the CPU / GPU. which i dont care, i want my video looking good.

Yes sir, its still rootable. i rooted and then bought root explorer so i could go in to the camera apk settings and change it so that the lowlight minimum fps doesnt go below 20fps. (changed it from 12000, 12fps, to 2000, 20fps)

also, the camera app opens about a second or two faster.

Would you mind posting a quick how-to about how to change these settings? I'm interested in this as well.

Finally some good news! However it begs the question that if the replacement phones are coming with it, why is it not being sent to everyone's existing devices?

Maybe they like seeing the community sweat. Maybe they have bets going to see how long it will be before the community his critical mass and is about to meltdown. then they release it. closest person to guess when this event happens takes the spoils.

These are just two of my theorys. dont trust me.

I'm also eagerly and anxiously awaiting the official OTA firmware update. My current versions are as shown below. I ordered my phone on 7/7/11, which is when the phone was first available online.

System version: 5.5.959.XT852.Verizon.en.US
Build number: 5.5.1_84_D3G-20_TA-9
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-g42f0276

Yeah, we early buyers have that System Version, etc.

It appears that newer, more recent buyers are finding the OTA built into their devices, stock, as well as some of those getting replacement devices due to issues.

So, perhaps we'll be seeing that wanted prompt coming to our phone's screen real soon.

Does anyone know if the OTA will address the issue with sleep mode? My wife's D3 can be put into sleep more, but won't come out of it without a battery pull. When it finally boots, it'll be in airplane mode.

Weird that you mention this. Last night I charged mine off my laptop, so I put it to sleep to ensure it would not draw power at a rate that would leave it semi-charged in the AM. Well, I woke up and it was powered on, but in airplane mode. I just updated to the leak tonight, and did a quick test right now. I put it to sleep, but it didn't want to wake up until I plugged it into the charger. It then woke up with a power button press and was not in airplane mode.

On a side note, I can't find Google Talk after updating to 5.6.890. Is it possible that P3Droid's D3 toolbox removed it when I hit debloat?

My Droid 3 has that same behavior (I have not installed the leaked OTA). I'm in the habit now of removing the battery at night, then putting it back in and charging it "off" in the morning, as this device reaches full charge very quickly, I've noticed, usually within one hour.

Well, the weekend has come & gone, still no update. This is somewhat depressing. If it's already on new phones, absolutely no reason we shouldn't be getting it...

Well, what I'm wondering is if they're provided it in new devices just to get a larger pool of feedback. I really do doubt that, but at the same time I guess I have little confidence in their word about things like these updates.

"Mixed feelings" I guess describes it for me.

If I had to wager on it, I'd bet a buck or two that it's coming to our devices this week.

Just a buck or two, mind you. :D

I bought a Droid 3 last Saturday ( 9/17)and was unaware that it had the latest software until I came to this forum, the strange thing is that my phone does not have Google talk with video.

Hmmm... from the OTA PDF:

Applications and Widgets
+ Google Video Talk now comes preloaded.
+ Geo-tagging feature works properly.
+ Successfully subscribe to News App bundles.
+ Successfully launch GoToMeeting

I think I found Gtalk, simply called "Talk" as an app. Also, it really improved my battery life. I'm at 60% after 7hr 53min. This is where I'd usually be anyways, but that was only with JuiceDefender running at allowing 1 min of data every hour unless I forced otherwise. Now, I have no special controls running to save battery. Additionally, I'm at 13% of the time without service in my school.

The phone does seem to be considerably snappier between screens and loading home screens when exiting an app. The thing that bugged me too, was that the Car Dock would FC when removed from the dock although the icon would remain in the status bar until touched, when it would FC again. Now, I remove it and it closes normally, as it should.

A few guys on the XDA Droid3 forum reported this morning that the soak test starts tomorrow! One quoted from a message from Matt, the Motorola guy on the Motorola Droid3 support forum. Sure sounded like Matt in the quoted email...

I do NOT understand why Motorola would start a soak test now on a OTA update that is already being shipped as standard on new phones that many people have already received and are using. Its just not how one does software testing, to write it, ship it on released product, and then test it in wide beta later. Once code is released, its released. If problems are found after releasing, then you'll have to address them in a later update - its too late to fix them in the released one.

This situation is particularly frustrating since it seems from reports here and elsewhere, as well as from version numbers reported, that this same code was completed and has been unchanged since the last of August. Still Motorola is talking about how Droid3 owners should wait for the OTA to be thoroughly tested, including the Soak Test. Why ?

This sort of thing makes me really wonder what is going on with Motorola.

Still waiting. Still having poor battery life, sticking keyboard keys, etc...if I returned the phone and wound up with a new one somehow, I would already have had the OTA's corrections before even the Soak Test group got them, legally, like Ghost has for over a week now. Right ?

Thanx for that bit, glennj.

Wracking my brain for scenarios that would have them shipping new devices with that not yet completed/tested software, I'm wondering now if they've just decided to do away with the older versions of the OS as too buggy.

That would explain why we're seeing the un-soaked (or just now soaked) OTA coming out later on for perfection, but they may have needed to toss the old (System version: 5.5.959.XT852.Verizon.en.US Build number: 5.5.1_84_D3G-20_TA-9 Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-g42f027) because of so many exchanges for refurbs.

It's 50% installing on mine. :) It's finally here, or so it seems! This phone is so awesome already, so I can't wait, quite honestly. :{D

4G is amazing in NYC, but I opted for perhaps what is the "best" 3g phone in the market. I am more than happy already with what I already had. If this improves battery life (which was fine already, IMHO), and the camera issue, the phone will almost be basically perfect for all my needs, and then some. 4G will wait till they figure out a way to have more efficient energy use-the battery drain seems to be unreal, but the speed is really something beautiful to behold, so there's that; I nevertheless went 3G, even in NYC, because what this phone offers is truly spectacular, especially for the price.

It just restarted! ^^

Update Status

The software update was successful!

Your phone has been upgraded to 5.6.890.en. US version

Hope all of you have a great experience going forward with this "little" giant of a phone. :{D
