Super Android Market Problem!!!

Ok this is gonna be long so you've been warned....

I have a Samsung Captivate. It's rooted and unlocked and all that jazz. I have firmware 2.2.1 and I'm not sure what the ROM is (perhaps Phoenix?? I have the ROM manager app, but all this was done to the phone when i bought it so idk anything about it). Anyway, my Market has had serious issues since I bought it. The previous user failed to erase any of his data and so his account was tied to the Market. I ended up having to do a factory reset and now their is no account tied to the Market. But here's the thing: my Market only works for a little while, then force closes. What I normally have to do is clear data and uninstall updates, then it will let me use it for a while, perhaps even download some apps. but inevitably it will force close somewhere down the line. Actually the message appears and disappears so quickly i had no idea what it said for a long time. But apparently the problem is in the Market version 3.1.5 because when I revert back to version 2.3.2 it works just fine. My thinking is that it automatically updates back to 3.1.5 and then force closes. As i've said I already did the whole clear data, clear cache, uninstall updates, reboot, and factory reset. I've also tried a few other things but had no success. I think I need to update to gingerbread 2.3 or something but kinda scared don't wanna lose my root, etc (I do have titanium backup by the way). Some of you computer genuises out there help me out. I'm not completely illiterate but please speak simply. Thanks.

It happened after I did the factory reset. I have two Gmail accounts but neither is tied to the market. When i get on it asks me to accept the user agreement then goes straight to the market. I can hurry up and download a few things. Then eventually the Market updates itself and force closes. How do I tie my.account to the market maybe that will help.
