Sprint bastages!

i'm sorry but i highly doubt this. Sprint doesn't own the phone and i'm not sure they have a software update that they push to your phone without you knowing immediately upon your service being cancelled.

yesterday was the last day of my time to pay the bill, i didnt, and they shut off my service, the wifi now enables but the signal icon does not appear on the upper bar... They have killed the wifi.
I did a factory reset, did a recovery...all still the same..they have deliberatly killed the wifi... And ill tell you why... Becuase all the apps work on wifi...so cutting off the voice service is just telling them to stick it...and you get to keep on using the evo 3d on sip service... In other words you dont need them...and they know it..so they have criminally trespassed into my computuer phone and damaged my phone by disabling the wifi..
Trust me the sprint *zzholes did this..to me.and they will do it to yours !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turn on Airplane Mode and then turn on WiFI and go into Wireless & Networks and make sure you have all your settings to connect to WiFi. Sprint did not disable your WiFi. How do I know? I lost an employee last week and we canceled their line and I have an Evo 3d in Airplane mode on Wifi sitting right next to me. I hope we can be of help to you....

If your wifi isn't working, it's not because Sprint flipped a switch and somehow disabled the radio on your phone. As others suggested, turn on airplane mode and then flip on wifi. And I might suggest taking a few deep breaths before you pop a blood vessel. Is there anything else you have done that might be interfering with the wifi? Is your wireless router working with other devices? Have you tried going someplace else and trying to connect to a different hotspot? Did you drop your phone in the water or something?

Like I said, they would have to push data to your phone to kill your wifi.

i have heard of phones not being able to be used once service is off of them unless you go in and do something, friend had old phone which he wiped after deactivating it and couldn't get it to work at first. this was a moto X on vzw but still, doesnt seem completely far fetched, though i dont think sprint is purposely doing this....

Hmmm. We haven't had that issue on VZ or Sprint with Smartphones. Even the old flip phones still were fully functional except without service. I would find it hard to believe that Sprint eliminates the Wifi functionality on your phone.

As would I, i did talk to a fellow phone guru and once he deactivated his X it wouldn't let him into the phone at all untill he google a fix and had to do something to a blank screen for it to come on (thats how he explained it). I didn't really ask for details, wish i would have now....

at any rate that was just my attempt to diffuse any boiling emotions:)

(though i thought the tin foil hat comment was pretty funny:))

Correlation does not imply causation. What does that mean? It means two things that happen at the same time doesn't necessarily mean one caused the other.

Your logic is unsound as well. The "apps" you have don't belong to Sprint, and they see no money from the apps you use. Meanwhile, even though you can use them on wifi, the wifi signal is not provided by Sprint. It's provided by your own wallet if it's your home Internet service, and by Starbucks if you're lounging in their store.

So why would Sprint give a damn what you do after you cancel service? If they want to punish you, they will charge you an early termination fee. That's the entire purpose of of the ETF.

Thinking that Sprint has some mystical, unseen way to brick your phone or wifi is absurd. It's also telling that you're the only one whose ever reported this. If Sprint's policy was to kill all phones due to early termination, this forum and others would be rioting. Sprint would have no customers. Tons of people cancel service early all the time. Why is it only you they killed wifi?

Remember, the employee who you worked with to cancel your service doesn't give a damn. They're just doing their job. That person is not angry because you just canceled Sprint service. They probably just hate their job like the rest of us and just want to get you over with and go home to their family. So to think this employee who represents Sprint was out to get you and pushed the mysterious red button of death on your phone is nonsense. Even paranoid.

Do us all a favor: stop trying to correlate your canceled service with your broken wifi and just accept that maybe your wifi died on its own. Tough luck. Maybe it's fixable and someone here can help you with that.

but kudos to the OP for properly using a made-up curse word from the movie Johnny Dangerously :)

"Roman Maronie nerver forgets the fargin face, kid. I'll get you!"

+1 to that:)

But seriously, jediknight, you are of course entitled to your opinion but i hope you realized that there is NO way sprint would/could do this.

I have heard of some phones not working right after getting deactivated but that is WAY different then a carrier completely disabling a feature/service on your phone.

Think this thread has run its course:)

if anyone disagrees with the lock please PM me

Yeah - so NightAngel79 and I have been chatting and the thread's hereby re-opened.

They can't kill wifi so far as I know. But - if we all recall carefully, a stock phone has to access things thru the Sprint proxy servers and if you lose access to those proxies, who is to say that to the casual observer that it doesn't look like loss of wifi access?

For full technical discussions on the Evo 3D, please visit that device forum and perhaps best start with this handy guide (it includes a pointer to instructions on how to bypass their proxy servers) -

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-3d/360315-must-read-official-htc-evo-3d-forum-guide.html

~~~~~~~
On the other hand, we mods have received a PM or two about else this is possible and are inviting further discussion on this.
~~~~~~~

PS - friendly word to the wise - never say never, practice kindness at all times.

Another friendly word to the wise - OP, you are clearly sure of your position, but you may or may not be correct in what's what. Please remain calm and you may find that sharing details with others here may be fruitful to a simple outcome. ;) :)

Some info to note:

Carriers can lock out your phone, but they have to have a reason (eg. stolen/lost phone, failure to pay/delinquent account, misuse of service, etc.). You are entitled to have the carrier give specific reasons for the lock, but you have to ask. I suggest doing that in writing if you feel that something's been done incorrectly.

EINs tied to the phone are the way phones are locked and data is pushed. It's unlikely that Sprint did anything to the Wifi other than not allowing the EIN to get through the full boot process which includes setting all the data accessing radios. EINs are a disadvantage with CDMA carriers like Sprint and VZW, but it is an effective control mechanism.

It's also fairly likely that carriers would want decent locks in place to make it difficult to for unauthorized phones to roam on each others' networks.

That Sprint boot screen is the giveaway that you have to get through Sprint's boot.
It's probably possible to simply root the phone and get around the issue, but I don't advise or know how to do that.
