There's so much info out there, I don't even know where to begin. I've been reading and reading, but I'm just going in circles at this point.

How do I use CWM to make a backup? I have ROM manager installed and I used that to flash CWM. I want to flash this ROM:

[ROM] midNIGHT ROM v2.0 NoCIQ/CWM 10/02/2011 - xda-developers

but I want to make a backup first and I don't know if it's working or not. If I click "Backup Current ROM" and create a name for it, it appears to reboot my phone, it shows a box with an arrow coming out over the android dude for a second or 2, then it shows a triangle with an "!" inside next to the android dude and from there it just freezes until I force reboot it. BTW, I'm running the stock rooted kernel and just the stock ROM.

Also, when reading the instructions for installing this ROM in the link above, the first thing it says is:

1) You need to odin CWM Recovery

What does that mean and how do I do it?

Thanks! I'm a complete noob here

NVM. I got it.

What happened was I never had CWM installed. So if I tried to Odin into CWM I never saw the CWM options. Thats where I was getting confused.

I ended up installing a kernel that had CWM packaged into it, so it ended up being a painless process.

Did you flash the one that you linked in your first post? It has zedo's OC kernel. I m not dumping on zedo but I don't trust it yet. Let us know how its working for you. 1.6ghz must be nice. If its stable I may jump too!

Yes I did flash that one. Once I was able to boot into CWM it all became clear. For some reason, even though Im running this ROM, I'm trying to use Titanium Backup, but it says it can't acquire root. So I may just flash a different kernel over this ROM. I'm reading up on this right now

I'm having the same problem as OP, and I'm not sure what to do to fix it. I'm fairly new to this whole rooting/rom process, not sure if I COMPLETELY understand it but I'm no dope! I am simply trying to backup my ROM. I currently have the phone rooted using that one-click method and the "Odexed-Rooted-Busybox" ROM, which I believe is basically stock (correct me if I'm wrong!). I would like to flash the noICQ ROM (http://androidforums.com/epic-4g-touch-all-things-root/423142-mod-nociq-epic-touch-10-2-2011-a.html). I just can't even get past the backing up my current ROM step! Now I figure the ROM on my phone now is the same one in the .tar I downloaded, but it bothers me that the backup won't complete...

Question: I Odin'ed bubby's CWM, which IIUC, is modified from the original Epic's version. I can reboot into CWM, make nandroids, etc, no problem. I then installed ROM manager, which does not recognize the current CWM and wants to flash a new one. Does anyone know if ROM Manager's CWM is compatible with this phone yet? Thanks.

How are you trying to back up the ROM? Do you have Clockwork Mod installed? If you don't, or you're not sure, then use Odin to flash your phone with this file: SPH-D710_ClockworkMod_Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar

found here: [ACS][KERNEL] ClockworkMod Recovery v 5.0.2.3 // SD and Internal Storage Mounted - xda-developers

after you install it, power the phone down, then hold the power button and the volume up button together until you boot into clockwork mod.

I've tried flashing CWM through ROM manager, creating back ups, etc, and it just doesn't work. So far I haven't really found a use for ROM manager
